Jakarta Vikings was
founded in 1989 by Danish nationals relocating to Jakarta from Singapore
and Bangkok where they had played for the respective Vikings teams. That
same year JKT Vikings was one of the five teams that established the
tournament now named Jakarta International Football League (JIFL) and have
participated ever since, winning the league twice in 1989 and 1990. (A
feat unfortunately not repeated since)
Since the 70’s Singapore Vikings and Bangkok
Vikings played a match each year and, supplemented by JKT Vikings in 1989,
this annual “international” became the Viking Cup. Each year we set sail
for the annual raid hosted variously around SE Asia. JKT Vikings have won
the Viking Cup three times most recently in 2000.
We also
sign up for various 6-a-side tournaments in Jakarta, Bali and on occasion,
overseas tournaments
Until
1998 JKT Vikings was dominated by Danes supplemented by a couple of
Norwegians and Swedes although we always had some non-Scandinavian
members. In 1998 the expat exodus from Indonesia changed the composition
of the squad with Scandinavians becoming a minority and for the last ten
years we have had members from all corners of the world.
Philosophy
We play
to win but by fair means, and we expect our members to understand and
respect this.
Fighting
on the pitch and other un-sportsman like behavior will lead to suspension
and potential expulsion. Sanctions have so far never been necessary and
we hope it never will be.
Current mix
The
current squad includes not only Danish but American, Australian, Kiwi,
French, British and Malaysians – all of good Viking stock from our
forebears’ years of invasion and pillage of course.
Age is
not a limiting factor either – some of our current regulars are north of
fifty – we really must work on that youth development policy.
How does it work?
Most of
our matches are played at ISCI on Tuesday or Wednesday nights.
On most
Saturdays we meet in Country Woods Estate for a friendly kick around; some
refer to this as practice – but we don’t seem to be improving despite
this!
After
“practice” we meet poolside for a few drinks and discuss important matters
of life, particularly the EPL matches to be played during the weekend –
even more important since the advent of the Jakarta Vikings Fantasy
Football League, whose member comprise Vikings old and current wherever
they may be in the world.
Besides
the football activities it is not unusual for some of the members to meet
for drinks and socializing during the week. Normally we will have an End
of Season Party but the real highlight is the Christmas Lunch featuring
traditional Danish food and drinks.
The Club
finds it important that new players fit in and feel comfortable with the
existing squad as JKT Vikings longevity is due a squad that enjoy not only
playing football together but also socializing afterwards. If you think
JKT Vikings might be your club away from home then please contact us. |
