First
game of the season played with a very late kick off at JIS, thanks for the
understanding from German+, but it was out of our hand since the opponent from
the varsity boys came late too. Anyway, Kick off after 9pm, as in the Champions
league, and both teams looked a bit rusty in the first 20 minutes. German+ hit
the post , but in the 25th minute a fine pass from Slusher found Gordy and his
chip made it 1:0 for JIS. Just before halftime JIS lost the ball in midfield,
nice passing to Mathias who run through 2 JIS defenders and 1:1 halftime. Also
the highlight of the first half was a back pass from JIS player Gray to the
keeper Andreas, but somehow the ball found the corner flag, very impressive,
that's how you confuse strikers, tricky english guy.
Blitzstart from JIS, our Uli (Toni Polster) Pfeil scored nicely to make it 2:1,
one offside goal from german+ was disallowed, and most of the clear chances were
with JIS in the second half. A fine 1-2 between Jurrien and Gordy, and Gordy
made the final score 3:1 for JIS. It was the first game and the first win for
the JIS coach Gerardo, who guided us with his southamerican football wisdom and
good subbing through the game. A fine fair first game , also I leave it to Howie
to comment on the refs.
Uwe (JIS)
German
Plus confirms details provided by Jurrien below. Maybe the wrongly disallowed
goal would have encouraged our troops a little bit more. Unfortunately we also
had some key players missing.

After a
difficult off-season in which it looked like the Lions would fade away into the
Jakarta night, a new look team re-emerged Phoenix-like from the ashes. There was
the return of some old (very old) faces and some new young bucks, who even
brought their wives along, much to Johnny “Golden Ear” Harrington’s delight.
Unfortunately for the new Lions they were up against the World All Star elect,
Wanderers team. However, we had our own secret weapon in Ollie who has returned
from Semerang with a new name “Noel” and a vastly improved footballing ability.
The early exchanges were promising with Noel combining well with Golden Ear and
Elgin and Les “McManus” Robertson controlling the midfield, overjoyed as he was
to be back playing on grass and not against goats in the Sudanese desert.
Surprisingly Dale was very quiet during the early sparring between the two
giants of the JIFL and the only sounds in the early exchanges were those of the
WAGS (wives and girlfriends) giggling nervously as Johnny Harrington’s shorts
rode ever higher up his thighs. However, the FIFA Allstars soon got into their
stride and some good finishing combined with a few defensive mishaps saw them
cruise to a 3-0 lead.
In a desperate attempt to unsettle the opposition, the Lions indulged in some
mind games from the sidelines, questioning the lack of shin-pads on some of the
FIFA Allstar’s players. A period of infighting ensued during which the Lion’s
managed to score a well-worked goal, created by Elgin and tucked away by Noel.
Old and new players alike gasped for air like dying walruses as the half-time
whistle blew. McManus, seeing their plight, gave a rousing speech to summon up
one last almighty push for the second period as Johnny Harrington sat making
small-talk with the players wives.
Unfortunately, the second half was to bring no joy for the new Lions. Despite
the inspirational talk there was imply no gas left in the tank and the FIFA
Select XI scored three more goals to finish the game off as a spectacle.
Highlights for the Lions were Noel’s goal, debuts for 4 players, Dilly’s shot
from 50 yards out and the fact that this time there was no fighting. We look to
get stronger again in the coming weeks with Richard Henry returning from feeding
malnourished chimps in the Congo basin, Wayne coming back from his “stress
related” illness and Gareth Bale flying in by private helicopter from the
Bandung Conference.
Wayne (LIONS)
Early
doors was tight - Lions playing well & giving debuts to quite a few new players.
Wanderers probably had the more chances and went ahead with Hernan finishing off
a nice move. Then Tommy latched on to a beautiful long ball over the top. Lions
had chances and Noel scored a good goal for them on his debut. Addy also scored
on his debut but for the Wandererd and with his first touch of the ball!!!
Game continued in pretty much same vein into the 2nd half with Wanderers
notching up 6 goals, another from Hernan, and one each from Pres & Dale -
probably could have been more except for some fine saves by Sakai in 1st half.
Lions continued to press forward & closest they came was when John Jacobs (also
making Lions debut) was clean through but fired over the top.
Overall, a game played in good spirits although some weary looking faces towards
the end of the game as most of us missed pre-season training again.

Saturday
afternoon at Olahraga Stadium was more than just a season start for D's. After
a promising warm up on a friendly played the week before, this team had to prove
to its own members and its fans -which are huge-, that it could be possible to
repeat the great performance they had last year, in spite of management and
coaching changes and some new kids bringing fresh air to the team. From
beginning to end D's Place managed to dominate Bugils but the poor field
conditions made it hard for the Blues to score.
It took 25 minutes for D's to score, but goal didn't come from any of the
strikers or usual scorer Nico Clementz, Saturday afternoon was Yuri's game.
From a corner kick he managed to get the ball with his right foot and kicked it
way far from goalie. Great goal and an announcement of Yuri's best game playing
with D's so far. Game went on and still it was hard for Bugils to bring some
danger to Yahya's, there was a good work from D's defense who managed to control
Bugils superstar Eliseo. Even with a strong supremacy, still in 2nd half it was
still hard for D's to score, but again after a corner kick, Jeremias "Piojo"
Guitarte grabbed the ball after some rebound and settled the final 2-0. Joy for
D's, game over for Bugils Great game for Andre who at the last moment of the
match had an opportunity to score but missed it by little. This guy looks fit
for this season and is a menace with his Russian shouting to its rivals. After
the game both teams joined for some beers and had a great time.
Guillermo (FC D's Place)
BuGils struggled a bit to play as a team, though
the new defensive partnership generally worked well. Both D's goals came from
set pieces, the first from a corner on the right with Yuri striking into the top
corner on the half volley after easily pulling away from his marker (yours
truly), the second by Jeremy through a crowded penalty area after a bit of a
communication breakdown in the defence.
D's looked generally comfortable on the ball but failed to capitalise on their
superior technique & teamwork - aside from their goals they didn't really
trouble JB in the BuGils goal, though there was one goalmouth clearance and a
fairly legitimate penalty claim denied. Most of BuGils & several D's players
enjoyed some refreshing free 'tea' at Eastern Promise after the game.

GERMAN PLUS CLEARLY WON or SWEET REVENGE FOR THE
VIKINGS... No cards, obviously the referee forgot to bring any. A hopeless
overdemanded German Plus team with just 13 players against a 20 head strong
Vikings army. The strongest Vikings team I have seen for several years.
Scoresheet opened at the first Vikings attack on the German goal. A long long
loop, which didn't look dangerous in the beginning finally found it's way into
the German net. After six minutes the already weak German Plus team was reduced
to just 12 "players" when two Vikings crashed with our player Joern, who
injured himself badly. It has to go into the records that the Vikings played
very rough and some yellow cards were approbiated. However the referee didn't
show any during the entire match. 2-0 for the Vikings after just 12 minutes, 3-0
after 20 minutes. The fourth goal was clearly offside, half time 4-0. Then
German Plus had their first 100% chance of the match, but failed to score.
Vikings though, did: 5-0 after 65 minutes, 6-0 after 70 minutes, 7-0 after 75
minutes. The remaining German Plus troops defended bravely and they even scored
a consolidation goal. Jesper then gave German Plus the coup de grace with a
bullet out of 25 meter distance. Final result: Vikings - German Plus 8-1
Why German Plus clearly won? That was
refering to the post match drinking competition which was clearly dominated by
the losers. Why sweet revenge? That refers back to the early nineties when
German Plus was league champion 4 times and when we beat the Vikings 8-0 at
their home ground at Country Woods Estate. Long long ago....

D’s totally dominated the first 20 minutes of play.
JIS were lucky not to go behind early when D’s missed a penalty kick. JIS goalie
Andreas had to come up with some good saves to keep D’s at bay. Against the run
of play JIS scored after 25 minutes when Uli was in the right place to poach
Lance Murgatroyd’s mishit home. D’s kept coming but were wasteful in front of
goal and needed a JIS defensive error to tie the game right before the break:
1-1 Half Time.
Worst possible start for JIS in the second half, when D’s scored in the 1st
minute to go 2-1 up.After this goal the match was pretty even with lots of
chances on both sides. Unfortunately for JIS only D’s managed to find the back
of the net one more time with a well taken shot from outside the box.: 1-3 D’s
Final Score
Jurrien (JIS)
After a promising debut, D's Place prepared the game
against JIS -one of the toughest teams in the league- very seriously. Very
focused from the beginning, D's place got a penalty early, but unfortunately
Nico Clementz missed it. In spite of this, D's continue attacking and pressuring
JIS but was unable to score despite having many easy options. Resisting to D's
continuous attacks, JIS gave a class of effectiveness by scoring in one of their
first attacks. However, the game continue pretty much on the same way: D's still
having options but unable to score and JIS ready for quick counterattacks.
When 1st half was reaching to an end D's finally got to score through Patty.
That way the blues could go to half time less worried and planned their
strategies to win it on the 2nd. After some changes made on the squad, D's got a
very early goal at the beginning of 2nd half through Mark, a new member of the
team who showed all his skills and managed to organize blues midfield.
Game remained pretty much flat, not many goal opportunities but still D's looked
sharper than JIS on the midfield and remained strong in defense trying to stop
JIS attacks and its man of the match Dough. Alex scored with a great long
distance shot after a sweet combination with Gaston. Game sentenced, two out of
two for D's.

A battling display from BuGils, coming from behind twice to secure
victory with some better passing in the 2nd half. Both Japan goals came from
miscommunication between BuGils defenders and the keeper, the third BuGils goal
came after a collision between Japanese defenders just inside their own half.
All goals very well taken.
Match started 30mins late, BuGils captain Will having walked to the far corner
of the ground @ 15.50 to get the Ref team to pull their fingers out/socks up/get
a f*ing move on). Typically strange decisions followed so no points redeemed.

A great goalkeeping display from JB earned him MOM and kept the
score down but that doesn't tell the whole story (BuGils felt that Faris'
contribution in midfield merited mention). Whilst Vikings were the more
accomplished side(s)* and played some slick football, BuGils also managed some
periods where they were able to string together some nice moves leading to a few
close or spurned chances (one of which deserved an apology, which has been given
several times) and a strange refereeing decision to award a free kick ouside the
box for an incident that was clearly well inside.
Two very well taken goals from Vikings. Once again BuGils leaked goals from
defensive mishaps, though it has to be said that for at least one of the goals
blame cannot be laid at the feet of BuGils defence - the 3rd defensive line up
in 3 matches. An apology has been made by the 'guilty' party.
Graham (GiGi)
*Vikings seemed to have the luxury of playing an almost totally changed line-up
in the 2nd half
You never know who turns up when you play Bugils and last night
they, disregarding missing several players, turned up with a good solid side
that battled to the end. The score reflects very good goalkeeping by both
goalies as Bugil's had 3 open chances and a very good effort from the distance
that Jan managed to push out on the goalpost . Vikings squandered several very
good opportunities as well and it is not a coincidence that we picked Bugil's
goalie as man of the match. In the final analysis we felt that we just had just
a little more than Bugil's in the tank which earned us a - all considered - well
deserved 3 points.
After a dismal 2006-7 season it is hard to believe that we have won 2 matches in
a "row" and have a goal score of 10-1 when we last season hardly scored and
nobody on the team can remember when we last won 2 matches in a "row". Are we on
a winning streak? We do not care we are just very pleased that we have 6 points
in the bag for rainy day ahead. The officials have had better nights with a
couple of controversial decisions with one going Bugils way and one going
Vikings way - with none resulting in goals - plus a strange free kick to Bugil's
that should not have been awarded but since it was, should have been a penalty.
Do not underestimate Bugils would be my advice.

Travelling to Sentul to achieve the perfect start with 3 wins in a
row was not going to be as easy as D's Place thought. Before starting to play
D's was already in trouble, some key players specially its captain Marc were
absent. However, as the game started, D's had a very good start that showed why
the team was favourite to win the game. Ball possesion and some chances made it
look that D's was going to achieve what it came for.
But football does not always reward the team who has the best chances, it is
simple: goals have to be made not deserved. Japan understood that very well and
in one of their few attacks, through a corner kick, got their first goal with
much of D's resposibility showing a weak defense. From that moment onwards, D's
Place were never the same, they became very irritated, anxious and nervous.
There was a long game ahead, but the blues couldn't manage to control their
nerves. It is fair to say however that D's got some very clear chances to tie
the game before the end of first half, but it seemed that it was not a good day
for many of its players.
Second half remained pretty much the same, D's attacking, now without order and
Japan comfortably playing with counter-attack opportunities. The formula gave
its results and with some quick moves, and again, D's defense showing important
weaknesses, Japan got a second goal. 2-0, 20 minutes to go and D's place dealing
with no ideas and a bit of a mess on the pitch.
Last 10 minutes showed a very exciting and interesting game, D's remained
attacking and Japan strongly defended their victory. Again Yuri scored for D's
and the last moments of the game were pure emotion. Japan did the right things
at the right moment, a well deserved victory for them 2-1. They were strong in
defense, quick and accurate in the offense.

their traditional black and white dress, unfortunately LIONS showed up in a
silver outfit, so very difficult to differ between the teams. Therefore GERMAN
PLUS collected their red uniform later. No referee team showed up, first half
LIONS provided a referee, second half GERMAN PLUS provided Karlheinz. Jesper,
please deduct the fees for the referee team later when paying to Dale. GERMAN
PLUS with the first big chance, but Yannick only hit the post.
First goal came from the LIONS after about 15 minutes. 0-1. Mathias around 5
minutes later then equalized. 1-1. Thenafter another 100% chance for GERMAN
PLUS, but again Yannick could not convert it into a goal. Instead after a
terrible mistake by our goalkeeper, the LIONS scored again.
1-2. Thenafter another mistake of our defence, 1-3. We replaced our
goalkeeper and put Patrick into our goal, who made some good saves later in the
match. A well taken penalty by Ralph then brought GERMAN PLUS back into the
match. 2-3. Break and GERMAN PLUS turned the match around: 3-3 after another
nice effort by Mathias, 4-3 through Yannick. Another goal for GERMAN PLUS was
denied when Ralph hit the crossbar.
Peter (German Plus)
After the JIFL international break, where many of the Lion’s squad
held a training camp in Bandung, the team returned to Jakarta with some fresh
nicknames, leaving behind a seriously disturbed poodle and accusations that they
had “gone too far”
On the day of the match with the Germans there were obvious concerns for Les
McManus, the Lions captain. Scottie the Seal was still cleaning up the puke from
Bale’s toilet and Richard ‘Turtle Neck’ Henry was having phone sex with Bubba on
his walky talky, so they couldn’t make the game. And some of those who did turn
up were hampered by mystery illnesses. Linford had a bad dose of ‘pink eye’ (and
no, I don’t know what it means either) and Damien ‘Bale’ had a poor lickle
tickly wickly throat.
The first trial of the day was actually finding the German school. After driving
around for an eternity a friendly Ojek driver finally escorted the fraught Lions
into the school. Upon first glance we were unsure whether we had turned up at a
football game or the scene of a 1970’s porno flick, such was the preponderance
of glistening moustaches and sweaty bodies.
But, fantasies aside, both teams were well up for the game, apart from Peg Leg,
who had a childish sulk when the starting eleven was read out with his name
omitted. However, with the new silver kits resplendent in the afternoon sun,
nothing was going to dampen the enthusiasm as the Lions kicked off. And all the
early pressure came from the Silver Surfers, with Elgin “Dupree” combining well
with Noel and the German defence on the back foot.
Indeed after the heavy defeat to the Wanderers it was much more like the Lions
we know and love - free-flowing football interrupted by vicious abuse of their
own team mates and the questioning of every refereeing decision. The early
pressure soon turned into goals with Dupree managing to turn his 60 year old
marker and fire into the bottom corner. Buoyed by this goal the Lions kept
coming, with Linford marshalling the back and McManus ticking things over in
midfield. A second goal was not long forthcoming. Golden Ear Harrington lunged
forward trying to get his ear lobe onto a square pass and managed inexplicably
to connect with his toe. After being told he wasn’t allowed to celebrate such a
dodgy goal, he trudged back to the centre circle, thinking of all the wives who
would only be too happy to celebrate with him.
When Dupree’s third goal went in, the Lions were riding high and already
contemplating their first win of the season. This was a fatal error. As Linford
put up his hand to rub his ‘pink eye’, the ball smacked him straight in the
wrists in the area and Dwi (despite being our player) had no hesitation in
pointing to the spot. The penalty was duly dispatched and a commanding
score-line now had a frailty to it.
The second half saw a change in referee, with a Pierluigi Collina wannabee,
replacing Dwi. The first ten minutes were a scrappy affair with Collina blowing
for the slightest contact and threatening to yellow card Bale for saying “Come
on Ref” – allegedly a vicious insult in Bavaria. When Golden Ear asked him to
justify some of his decisions he was met by a curt “I was in Europe”. The Lions
efforts fizzled out in the second half with Dupree’s fake injury keeping him
sidelined and the lack of fitness in the rest of the team meaning they were easy
prey to the Germans counter-attacking football. Events were briefly spiced up
with Linford’s second hand-ball of the game which earned him a yellow card and
Noel’s late challenge which also resulted in a Lions player exiting the field.
All in all it was a well-contested game with lots of attacking football which
was played in a good spirit.
Wayne (Lions)
