A man that loved us

Dear JIFL Football Society,

Today, I write to you in honour of a man that I should have mentioned previously in the past.  I owed him that much and I am sorry that I never wrote about him before today.  He was a man that supported our league going back over the past 6 years.  When he first arrived on our shores, because his old friend Philippe Monteiro Da Rocha, played there, he supported Team Italia.  And then when Team Italia went out of business, he transferred his support to FC D's Place where Philippe went to play.  If you played against FC D's then you knew him.  He was at every match with our webmaster, his friend, Nico Sanders.  Originally from New York, he never lost that quaint accent and he seemed to always exude positive waves and the French joie de vivre in his life.  He seemed to always make the best of any given situation and he did not mind sharing his opinion.  I never held it against him that he supported Chelsea over Arsenal because it is really just about supporting good football.  Support good football and you can't go wrong, he would agree.

I will tell you a little story about Howard and I.  Last spring, during a FC D's -vs- Wanderers match, he started scolding me for not publishing the Newsletter on a regular basis.  He told me that such things are important things.  And I tried to defend myself countering with the attitude of Atlas, 'Why am I always at fault? Why should I be the only one who contributes?.  And he patiently explained that I was looking at it incorrectly.  He explained that the community depends on the News and that that was my role to provide it.  A role that I willingly took on from his old friend Philippe a few years before (but apparently didn't want to take any criticism over).  A role that the community expects from me and they respond by sealing the deal by reading those words.  You see, Howard put it into a better frame that was more accurate than what I was imagining.  He said it exactly for what it is...  He said, 'You see, actually we all contribute. It's simple. You write & we read. It's a fair deal!'.  And he smiled with those great big white teeth of his and I knew he was correct.  I apologize for letting him down.  It was never my intention.  And I apologize to you lot, as well.  I will be regular from now on.  And not just in memoriam to Howard but because he was right.  Most of the time, he was right.  He was my friend.

Take a little while out for a moment, look at the photo, and remember the man.  He was a good man.  In fact, he was a most excellent man who loved his family.  He moved here to keep his family together, made the best of the situation and added value to all of our lives in the process.  He enjoyed watching our JIFL matches; I enjoy watching our matches.  We had that in common.  I will miss him.  Howard leaves behind here in Indonesia, his beloved wife Dewi, lovely and supportive daughter Ariane and his grandson, Keanu; Philippe, his beloved wife, Tati and their daughter, Maile. He will always be with us, in our memories and, in many cases, in our hearts.   He was a man that loved us.

 JIFL Christmas Party

Dec. 15th - Cancelled

Although everybody agreed that we were going to have this event on December 15th at our last league meeting in September, by this point, not enough teams confirmed so Peter cancelled it.  Fair enough.  I am going to plan a New Year's Party for the JIFL to be held at the end of January.  That way, all of the World Cup 6'ers people can be there as well.  And don't worry about it taking place a month after the actual New Year celebrations take place.... Einstein was correct: time is just relative anyway.

Take care and happy holidays for now.... I will have an X-mas edition out sooner than promised.

Best,

 Howard's friend

STATS AND REPORTS

JAPAN
     0 - 4     DO IT
Date & pitch:  December 8th, Sentul
Scorers: Graham Brown (2) (Do It), Gareth Jones (1) (Do It), Lucas Sheard (1) (Do It)
Mom:
Graham Brown (Do It), Tsukamoto (Japan)
Yellow Cards:
Gareth Jones (Do It), Omar Monir (Do It)
Refs: 8/10 (Do It), 7/10 (Japan)

First half highlights were as follows :
The first twenty minutes the tactics worked a dream, as short passing and keep ball tired out the Japanese, as Do It attacked down the flanks. Two goals were scored in this period, the first by Brown coming down the right with good interplay between Gareth and Brown. The second coming down the left after good interplay ( and retuning the favour ) between Brown and Gareth allowing Gareth to sneak in at the far right to score.
Unfortunately something had to give, and so it proved to be. After 25 minutes, Fabrizio tired after fighting the gravitational pull of Pikey requested a rest to be replaced by Burnett who was immediately sucked into central midfield.  Shortly thereafter Gareth   (who was being particularly energetic ) was replaced by Rudy in right midfield. The reshuffling of the team, and obvious lack of second wind resulted in a more balanced end to the half, especially as Hayes came on to replace Pikey.
Bigears touching the ball 3 times.

All in all for the first 20 mins we were by far the better team, evening out towards the end of the half, which ended.

A couple of switches at half time involved Fandi replacing Omar, Gareth replacing Rudy ( and Rudy storming of for an early shower ), and Fabrizio replacing Burnett.

Second half highlights were as follows :
Not only the referee awarding a penalty, but the shock of Brown scoring it as well.
Sheard scoring an absolute peach of a goal from the edge of the box, whilst everybody wishing him to miss. Post match
note – this was the 100th ever goal against Japan in DoIt’s history.!
Bad boys Omar and Gareth, both getting yellow cards
Bigears touching the ball twice
Omar’s multiple attempts at crossing the ball / shooting.
The Pikester’s multiple back passes to the keeper, unfortunately theirs.!
Back to back clean sheets.
Back to back theft of MOTM’s by Brown. Please deport Shebby!

After initial worries over getting a squad together, 16 BuGils players showed up for the game and despite a bumpy pitch and some inconsistent refereeing, the match turned out to be very competitive, ending in a close 2 – 1 victory to FC BuGils. The kickoff was slightly delayed when Will had to come off to assist in some pressing matters. BuGils started off in full gear and it did not take long for Little John to get the first chance on goal. His header neatly went past the wrong side of the post. BuGils had most of the ball but was not too dangerous in front of goal, resulting in 0 – 0 at halftime.

BuGils was quick out of the blocks scoring the opener shortly after the break. A good ball in by Boski found Faris who after some good footwork crossed the ball into the box. Will did not miss and volleyed the ball into the roof of the net from close range. A bit out of nothing the Lions equalized not long after. A quick break straight through the middle saw Damien go clear and he did not fail in front of the goal. A few hairy moments in front of the BuGils goal followed after some good pressure play by the Lions. It was Will again though who with a touch of class controlled Louis’ pass and volleyed it in beautifully from 20 meters out. More chances followed, including Lens’ “shit” shot but no goals were scored. 2 good chances just before full time gave the Lions hope for an equalizer but the FC BuGils goalie saved both.

Despite one or two rough tackles, the match was played in good spirit, also shown afterwards with the full BuGils squad and some of the Lions squad teaming up for beers in Eastern Promise after the game.

DO IT    6 - 0     GERMAN PLUS

Red Card: Ralph Scheunemann (German Plus)
Refs: 8/10 (Do It), 6/10 (German Plus)

Planed kick off 15.30 at BIS, great start before the match ! Why?.....because Do it had a complete team, in contrast to the G+ team consisting of only 7 players and a big disaster was coming up.. Good will of Doit they postponed kick off 30 min later and offered us some of their players to join our G+ team. Meanwhile our indonesian players arrived and thanks to Doit all of them where allowed to play the game. First half G+ didnt play bad but Doit scored after 20 min.. G+ collapsed early and many moments where of disaster and only a few moments of impressive football, Doit took one chance upon another chance and scored goal after goal and the interim result was 5-0 for our opponent. Second half no sensational scene except the red card for Ralph (G+) a disagreement with the refree and G+ where down to 10 men later Doit scored again and final result was 6-0. A total disaster for G+ records and we cant wait for the rematch.
Andre (German Plus)

Match Headline : Brown secures MOTM whilst playing keeper, whilst Fandi scores DoIt’s 1000th goal!!!  Can’t understand why Ronan gave the ref 8/10. You’ll have to ask him – German+ only gave him 6/10
