Dear
Leaguers,
And
a league we are. This means that we
equally depend on each other for
support. Which, in turn, means that
we are social. Therefore, our
opponents are just as important as
our own team for without them there
is no game which is the very reason
that we are playing on these teams in
this very league.
To apply the Golden
Rule means that we should treat our
opponents as well as we treat our own
team. Sometimes this does happen
like last Saturday at DIS between
German Plus and Wanderers,
but alltooften (new word) there seems
to be an amount of aggravation being
displayed, insults exchanged, and
even occasional physical assaults on
each other often disguised as a slide
tackle or other physical
confrontation.
So although social in
nature, unfortunately group sociology
and personal psychology sometimes
manifest themselves into viral
attacks on a particular group or
individual. It often starts in one
or two individuals and then spreads
amongst the rest of the side and
ultimately into the other side as
well. I wonder if we can channel our
particularly natural competitive
natures which manifest themselves in
all different kinds of ways on the
field to evolve into a more positive
event for all involved?
In other
words, how can we treat each other
better during soccer events
(reiterating that sometimes those
rivalries get out of hand in the
sense that negative destructive behaviour becomes apparent)? Therefore, rather then saying it all
again, I would rather that you

I would
like to have a quick word about
sportsmanship and league
spirit which we need more of in
the JIFL (in my humble opinion). And
although I love the competitiveness
and the standard that this league is
continually striving for season by
season, I, like many others, feel
that the verbal abuse and sometimes
physical abuse towards each other,
referees, and spectators alike is
uncalled for and really needs to be
controlled. If we don't get this
under control, lads, then we will
destroy our very own league. |
Now,
believe me I know all of the reasons
that any particular player might feel
unjustly fouled or singled out or
whatever and react badly. And let me
be the first to apologize if my
behaviour has ever ruined your
night. It was never my intention.
I'm trying to improve myself. I'm
working on it. But what is happening
in some cases is that players from
rival teams are walking into bars,
spotting a few lads from opposing
teams and then going over and taking
the piss telling them how poor they
are and how they are the worst team
ever and so forth and so on. That's
just uncalled for and downright
rude. Blame the behaviour on
whatever including drink or lack of
self-control but that again is not
actually the problem. The
mindset is the problem. Try
this: We must always remember the
'big' picture. Without opponents we
have no league. Without a league we
have no competition. Consequently,
life is boring really.
But you see,
again, as I mentioned in the opening
salutation, we are all part of the
same social organization which means
the same society. Let's try to
practice some respect for our
opponents, make it a habit, and
appreciate that they have taken the
time to play against us. Because
without them we have no match. No
league.
