A
life altering experience
Dear
Ballplayers,
It
has been an irregular schedule as of late with several factors
shaping the fixtures (or lack of) recently. Holidays and
weather notwithstanding some teams have been postponing due to
lack of a full line-up (whatever that means). I thought
that we got over this a couple seasons back? If you can
field a team than by all means do so. I know of quite a
few teams who regularly play with only 11 players including
the Grasshoppers and even the Wanderers who once played with
only The
Magnificent Seven (click here to see Newsletter
No. 7 season 2005-2006 for the complete story).
Although, I can understand why teams such as DoIt
might postpone a match here or there when the race is so tight
with the
Vikings for the championship this year.
I witnessed the
Grasshoppers versus Vikings
match on Wednesday evening, after JIS
cancelled their home match, and found it quite enjoyable for
several reasons including the fact that both teams were in
full matching kits and socks which increased the atmosphere by
50%. The only unfortunate part of the entire spectacle
was the fact the once again a $5 dollar piece of crap served
as the match ball. Throughout this match, every time
somebody hoofed the ball the resulting 'thud' sound grated
against my ear drums. You see... you can even hear the
difference between a good ball and a poor one. Anybody
that says different just does not possess enough experience to
comment on matters relating to football. Now, if you
truly were not aware of this fact then try it this weekend at
your own matches. Knock the ball around and
conscientiously follow it's flight, listen to the sound and,
if you are able, feel the strike spot (sweet spot) when you
connect perfectly with the ball. There is nothing to
compare between the great ball and all the rest. You
will never be the same again after that experience. It
is life altering.
Ray
Goo-Goggles has made a fine suggestion as mentioned
before and the process is in process. The league will
indeed enforce the proper class of ball rule starting in
2009/10 and
Erwin Prasetianto, head of referees, is there
to make sure of it. Another thing that is also important
and that I may have neglected to mention it is that the
air-pressure of the ball is just as important as well.
It can neither be too hard nor too soft. It is
tantamount to have a ball pump and even better if you have one
with a pressure gauge built in brought along with your team's
equipment each time that you play the game. Then and only then
will you always be prepared for the experience that a proper
football game is supposed to give to each person taking part
either as a participant or taking part as a spectator.
You see I believe the expectation of entertainment is equally
as important to both parties. We owe to our supporters a
standard that has to be enforced as well. Why else
should they spend even of a minute of their lives wasting it
on sub-standard entertainment due to faulty equipment?
Standards, boys. Let's just maintain and enforce our
minimum of standards and see how much better our league, and
by extension, our enjoyment of that league, becomes.
See you Live on
the Pitches,
-Your
Hero

This
was an important Football Match for our club. We had an
opportunity to close the gap and make it an interesting finish
amongst the top five teams; unfortunately, we blew it. One
Tree opened the scoring on a howitzer of a shot, from a free
kick just outside of the box, by team captain and motivational
speaker Marc (The Don) Giovanola. Doit tied it up just before
the half after some sloppy defensive blunders by our
flat-footed defensive corps. Half-time score 1-1. In the
second half, One Tree fell apart defensively with some
lackluster tackling resulting in Doit scoring twice to take a
commanding 3-1 lead. We continued however, to push and finally
got rewarded, after a blast, by striker Nico No, just inside
of the post, which cut the gap to 2-3.
Then our defense went back to work with more careless,
haphazard tackling resulting in another Doit strike; which
ultimately sealed our fate. Doit were just too strong for our
mostly pimply forwards, we just weren’t able to match them in
the physicality department. Some gruesome collisions occurred
in the second half; unfortunately, against our own players,
which left G.O. with a boot imprint on his face and the
reverberation of bells inside a rattled brain after a
round-house kick to the temple and yet another that left two
One Tree players discombobulated lying on their backs, gasping
for breath. Overall, a good match with fair play and a good
spirit, just the normal yelling, and swearing. Afterwards,
players from both team’s, drank beer, hit a few
establishments, turned tribal and blasphemous and eventually
resembled cavemen, howling at the full moon.

Saint Returns and DoIt still win
The Saint aka Mike Whibley made a rare return to Jakarta, not
only to hold the Dragon’s hand but also to make up the
numbers for the first time in a JIFL fixture since the
2005/2006 season. After rolling back the years and being top
scorer in the Penang 6’s last weekend, the Saint was desperate
for a start. However the Saint’s pre-match routine of “ooh
doesn’t Nico look good, they’ve got a strong squad, we’ll be
lucky today etc” doesn’t fit in with Manager Roberts winning
mentality and he was duly dropped from the starting line up –
much to the relief of the younger Lisa Stanfield who retained
his place up front and everybody else who has seen Whibley
play in defence.
With DoIt having it’s strongest squad of the season available
- it may have been slightly stronger and certainly heavier if
Pikey Satu aka Lardy Boy had been available, but the absence
of ENLAC significantly outweighed this slight negative, Do
It were looking forward to a hard but successful day out.
Under Manager’s orders to stay in on Friday night, Do It’s
players duly responded and turned up sober for once...

Bugils Army.
