Dear Missionaries
of the Football Cult,
Well, I
received only love letters and no hate mail all this week
in response to my query at the end of last week's
Newsletter no. 8/08plus
one reader sent in a correction. The reader politely
explained that the song Johanna (aka Give me
Hope, Joanna) is actually written and originally
performed by Eddie Grant and not Jimmy Cliff (who perhaps
performed it once but he is not the principal behind
it). So, I stand corrected.
More importantly,
I discovered after the Vikings versus the
Grasshoppers match on Tuesday evening that only
half of the JIFL is actually receiving the Newsletter every
week. I was in shock! How is it possible that only half of the
participants are getting it and the other 50% are in the dark? I
am blaming the Webmaster Nico Sanders for
that. Apparently he is not aggressive enough in making sure
that our beloved Newsletter is available for all. The entire
world should be reading it.
[A few words from Nico aka 'the one who is not aggressive
enough...':
Please add newsletter@jifl.netto
the address book/trusted senders/contact list/safe list of your Email
client/provider. Thanks!]
Additionally, I have to point the finger at the actual captains
and managers of each JIFL team. It is your responsibility to
make sure that each of your squad members knows that there is a
website called the JIFLand
knows that they can
and should be receiving the most important News in history every
week. It is an injustice that some of your players are unaware
of the existence of such important and life changing available
knowledge as is profoundly expounded each and every week here at
JIFL.net. An outrage, sirs! Captains and
Managers... you should be ashamed of yourselves for hiding the
truth and trying to selfishly hoard the knowledge in order to
maintain power over your minions. But, as usual, I have a
solution: Just send your team email lists to Nico and then he
can make sure that they are all subscribed up. Then everybody
will be receiving the same information, updates, and etc. 'Knowledge
is power,' Aristotleonce said. And I
believe that we must empower everybody. Lift up the world, Obama! And give us hope!
Now, back to the
cracking match on Wednesday night. I was at a meeting at the
Cafe Creme at ISCI and was very fortunate to have heard
the whistle blow and suddenly realized that a JIFL match was
taking place upstairs. I immediately moved the meeting up to
the grandstand and we watched a classic battle between two of
the finest clubs in the JIFL. First of all, I must say that the
Vikings are an excellent side this year with a good chemistry
and combination of youth and experience. They play a most watchable brand of football which leaves it quite understandable
why they are undefeated so far this season. Secondly, I have to
also admire the youth development policy of the Grasshoppers. They had a fine display from their young French lads with plenty
of speed and decent skill to boot. They reminded me of that
dynamic young Arsenal side that crushed
Wigan the other night. But, alas, this match didn't
end up 3-0 like that one. This match ended 5-4 in favor of the
Vikings! It was a bonanza of fine goals from both teams. Like
I said, 'a most watchable brand of football'. My old
friend John Hargreaves was there (some of you
may recall, he was one of the original members / founders of the
Wanderers along with Mike Wildblood going back
15 years ago) and he couldn't believe the difference in quality
that the league has evolved during the last 15 years. That was
the first match that he has seen in more than a decade.
And he
kept commenting on the speed and tenaciousness of the
Grasshoppers. They never gave up and kept coming back and
putting those Vikings under pressure. There were two
outstanding moments in this match that I simply must exaggerate
about. The first was a free kick from at least 35 meters out by
the player/manager of the Grasshoppers, Marc Giovanola
(from now on referred to as 'Marc Gio'). It was such a rocket
and traveling at such velocity that no goalkeeper in the world
could have saved it. It was unbeatable at every level. And the
next moment that was simply world class was when the
greatest that ever was, Jan Gramm, got
lobbed and the ball bounced over his head and was just inches
from the goal line when he suddenly made a game-ending
finger-flip over-the-head running-backwards save that was
nothing short of spectacular and which preserved the Vikings
victory and made my night. And not because I was favoring one
team over the other. I wasn't. I just recognized what a
fantastic save that was and it seems that only Marc Gio
recognized the quality of that athletic moment as well. Keep in
mind though that like Jan Gramm, Marc Gio is also a former
professional player and goalkeeper as well. Sometimes it takes
one to know one.
In other matches
this week, the Wanderers beat Team
Arario of Korea 7-0 and JIS beat the
Mighty Lions 4-0 both on Wednesday evening. And finally it has to be mentioned that Team Arario of Korea who
have struggled to catch up to the level of the league standard
have finally broken through the glass ceiling and chalked up
their first victory after two years of trying. On Sunday
afternoon, Team Arario defeated the Mighty Lions 1-0 on a goal
by their regular Man of the Match, leading goal scorer and young
star Heo Ji Seob finally taking them off the
bottom of the table and bringing joy and sunshine to their
lives. History has been made and I didn't even have to teach a
lesson in this week's Newsletter.
German Plus goal scorers:

This
time no rain and German Plus was hoping to continue it's unbeaten
strike. And what a cracker this match turned out to be, end to end
stuff down to the wire. Both teams had full squads available. And it
started good for German Plus. After about 10 minutes we were leading
thanks to a goal by Emir. 0-1. But the joy lasts only for 5 minutes,
then the Vikings equalized.1-1. However 10 minutes later it was
again Emir who scored 1-2. Another 10 minutes later the match was
levelled again. Bad mistake by our goallie. 2-2. Yet, one more time
German Plus took the lead thanks to a goal by Frank 2-3 and break. I
thought to myself maybe it will be the third time this season we
will play a 3-3 draw, but I was wrong as 15 minutes into the second
half a strong shot was being deflected by a Vikings defender into
their goal 2-4. I took another sip of my beer and thought "that was
it". Wrong, I not yet even swallowed the beer and it was already
3-4. Then after German Plus received a yellow card for complaining
and the loss of the player turned out to be crucial as suddenly
Vikings took control of the midfield. Consequently about 10 minutes
later the Vikings equalized for the 4th time 4-4. Worse to come,
only 5 minutes later they scored again and took the lead for the
first time in the match 5-4. Five minutes later a free kick by Emir
made it 5-5. And then sloppy defending not too long before the final
whistle 6-5. No, there were no further goals to come. Final score:
Vikings - German Plus 6-5. Who knows what would have happened if the
Vikings made it 3-3 earlier. After the match we would have been
happy with it. Vikings also won the beer drinking competition as
usual. Congratulations!

Yet
another free scoring match involving Vikings. This time Vikings
went ahead 2-0 after a displaying some 15 minutes of well crafted
offensive football but quite strangely the match changed character
after the 2 goal. One Tree seemed to change a gear up and
after another 15 minutes or so play we were a goal down.
Nevertheless, we managed to equalize before the break.
2nd half was a more cagey affair with Vikings taking the lead only
for One Tree to equalize on a screamer that from 25 meters or so
that was right up there in the triangle. A goal that would any
footballer proud.
Not that Vikings' goals were sloppy at all, as a matter of fact
they were all well set up and taken except for the last which was
rebound from a good save by the keeper but was picked up and
crisply send into the back of the
net for the final result of 5-4.
Yet another night were a rejuvenated Vikings team created lots of
chances and looking great going forward but far less comfortable
in defense. We seem to be a very low cost version of Newcastle
when Kevin "Might Mouse"
Keagan reigned in NUFC, at least it seems that we have the ability
to score at least the same number of goals as our opponent no
matter how many goals is scored against us.
The match was competitive and there was a fair amount of give and
take without anything malicious was observed by this writer.
Whilst we all have the urge to express our misgiving when we
disagree with the refere I found the verbal abuse that a couple of
One Tree players metered out on the referee was completely out of
order and resulted in a yellow and straight red to the same player
for mouthing. And if that was not enough the same player felt it
necessary to resume the verbal abuse after the match. I assume
that the player in hindsight is ashamed of himself, at least he
should be.
After the match we had a good time with good interaction between
the teams and I have promised Marc to report that One Tree won the
3rd half just after Midnite and Vikings graciously accept defeat
in the noble undertaking of keeping ISCI a float by the way of
spending money in the bar after matches. Well done.
Of the 4 team we have played so far DOIT and Wanderers seems to be
more or less on par with last seasons strength whereas both German
Plus and One Tree have significantly improved. I cannot help
thinking that we would have been absolute hammered by all 4 teams
if we had played with the Vikings team from the 2007-8 season,
which by our usual standard was a very good side.
It looks as if Wanderers could be challenged by a number of teams
which is good for Wanderers but even more so for the JIFL. - Jesper -

Referee: impossible to describe
This
year Vikings is definitely one of the best teams in the league,
the combine good passing football and their attack has become
lethal. Even though it was a very challenged game, they are
deserved winners.
Having said that and as an exception, the writer would like to
point out that one of the best matches in the league so far had
the worst referee. We still don't understand how come Erwin is the
head of refs, for sure something that has to be amended soon.
Unfortunately for the game with his negligence he had influence in
two of Vikings 5 goals. Anyhow, his absolutely disastrous
performance is no excuse for some of One Tree's players verbal
abuses and therefore yellow and red cards were correctly
shown.
Going back to the game, Vikings went ahead early 2-0 (it's getting
easy to score against our defense this year), but quick reaction
and a couple of nice goals set One Tree ahead 3-2. Paty twice and
Jere Piojo Guitarte (his farewell game?) made it possible.
However, shortly after our third goal came the equalizer
(referee's decision to give a yellow card to a Vikings player but
at same time give them a freekick when all our team was ready to
attack, nobody understood...). So half time ended with a
controversial draw.
Second half saw again Vikings taking the lead, but there was time
for JIFL's 08-09 best goal (sorry everybody but no need to see
more) after Marc Giovanola shot a superb freekick from 25/30
meters. No goalie can stop that.
The game continued on its vertiginous rhythm, anyone could win,
but then again Vikings showed no mercy and finished the deal
getting a rebound after a good saving by Yahya (many One Tree
players lost focus calling for a handball the ref did not see).

JIS-Lions
was a one sided affair with JIS dominating the game from start to
finish. Milan Bloem scored for JIS after 10 minutes to give them an
early lead. Good Lions defending, great goal keeping and very poor
finishing from the JIS strikers kept the score at 1-0 until 20
minutes from time. When JIS scored the second goal, through
youngster Kevin, it finally broke the Lions resistance and JIS
managed to get 2 more in the last 20 minutes of the game (Will
Julius and Milan scoring his second). Final Score: 4-0 JIS - Jurrien - JIS
