The rock that holds society together

Dear Chuku players,

Another week, another match.  That is an attempt on a play of words on an old adage that I heard Edwin's brother once mutter at D's one evening (way back when I was helping out there upstairs several years ago).  He said, 'Another day, another dollar'.  Anyway, it sounded better inside my head and doesn't look that smart when it is written down.  Quite weak actually when I read it again.  Well, anyway... firstly let's recap the results from the week.  The truly Magnificent Vikings forced a draw on the league leaders DOIT Satu Lagi which leaves them 1 point clear at the top and still in 1st place this week.  They will be meeting the Mighty Lions on Saturday which is another vastly improved team assuming they get their 30 new signings who all showed for their first match last month including their 4 former professionals.  As for me, well, some things have been going around and round in my head for a couple of months now and I believe that it is time to finally spill them out in words before my head blows up.  The catalyst that brings the words to light starts with Ray Googles interview in the last Newsltter.  When asked what his profession is at this time, Ray answered that he is a teacher.  And I am happy for him.  It is an honourable profession and one of the few that truly puts back into the community more than it extracts.  Recently, one of our JIFL members was overheard accusing another member of a rival team of 'working as a teacher at the Korean International School of Jakarta'  with the utmost of scorn and ridicule intended.  The gentleman's tone was understood like that is some sort of disgrace to do so; that is disgraceful to work as a professional teacher.  So let's investigate that statement again.  I think that if we break it down, initially, the first question that must be asked is:  Is there something wrong with Korean citizens?  I find that the Koreans are the hardest working ethnic group that I have ever come across and certainly the rest of the world can learn some lessons from them.  They are also one the most generous people that I have ever come into contact with during my 24 years of travel.  I have lived among and visited the Korean people on several occasions in the last 20 years going all the way back to the advent of the Seoul 1988 Olympics which was a fantastic introduction into Korean society.  That is more than 20 years of contact with mainland Korea and not to mention the Koreans that I grew up with in America.  They were traditionally the best students in the school system and apparently still are in the States by winning something like 47% combined of the available scholarships at any given school where greater than a group of 20 attend ar any given time (according to Poor Richard's Almanac: Edition 2006).  So to try and insult another man because he works at the Korean school or associates with Koreans is complete nonsense and can be discarded entirely.

The second part of the intended insult was the implication that the man worked as a teacher.  For those who respect or worship Jesus of Nazareth, wasn't he considered to be a teacher?   Didn't they call him Rabbi which translates to 'Teacher' in Hebraic languages?  Wasn't the Buddha a teacher?  Wasn't Muhammad the Prophet actually a teacher?  Didn't he teach the world in the beginning (known in the Islamic faith as Year 1) about the new faith?  Those certainly were some influential teachers, that's certain.  Now, as far back as I can remember, and this goes for almost every one of you who is reading this (after all, a teacher is the one who taught you to read in the first place), specific teachers were the most influential and inspirational people that I had ever met.  Nobody has had more impact than certain teachers on my life.  I think that nearly every one of you will think back and find that one or more teachers were inspirational to you, as well.  Actually, you see, football coaches are after all teachers, too.  We should keep that in mind if we are going to put teacher's down, after all.  I will never forget our 6th grade grammar school teacher,  Ms. Gail Hazen who turned us into archeology enthusiasts which, in turn, led to a deep personal love of history and all that has happened before our present civilization tainted me.  It has become a pleasure of my life to continue to study history and absorb the history of every country that I have ever lived in or visited.  Even my brilliant writing skills were honed out of fear to Ms. Mary McKeever, in Jr. High, who scared me into finishing an essay per night for an entire semester simply out of mortal fear of her freezing me at my desk with that wicked dry stare of Medusa or scolding me with that nagging voice of disapproval if I didn't get the work done.  {I am sure that there are some grammatical mistakes throughout that last sentence}.  I then jump to University studies during the '80's with Dr. Ray Price who inspired us to look at the world around us and try to read & listen between the lines for the historical context for the origins of current affairs.  Or Dr. Irv Bredlinger who inspired us to look at present day society's beliefs, norms and values using Ocam's Razor (also written as Occam's Razor and Ockham's Razor) in an attempt to get to the kernel of truth or the hard reality of any given matter.  He taught us to be and to think rationally.

So you see, teachers are actually the rock that holds society together.  They are the persons who serve and sacrifice for little reward so that knowledge and learning are passed from generation to generation.  They inspire us so humanity progresses.  Actually, very little comes naturally to human beings and our species takes ages to grow old enough in order to be able to defend ourselves independently.  We survive on the strength of our communities and loved ones to protect us for years before we can take on the task ourselves.  So, think again and ask yourself if you are one of those people who scorns the 'others' for not being millionaires and tries to belittle them for working in the noblest of professions when, in reality, teachers are the noblest of us all.  And this brings me back to the Korean community.  In my experience, no community honors teachers higher and bestows more honor on the teaching profession than the Korean community.  And this is yet another reason why I love the Korean community and I appreciate the respect that they bestow on (may I say it...?)  - the greatest of all professions - the 'lowly' teacher.

As always, all the best,

- Your Hero

ONE TREE 3 2 BUGILS

Saturday noon at Blok M, featuring "the derby". Best bars in Jakarta clashing on a battle to decide which team has the best football... or the best drinkers...

It ended up being a pretty exciting game, in spite of the match being played in the league's worst pitch.

From the beginning One Tree took control of the game and was by far more dangerous than Bugils, that's why it found itself winning pretty comfortable by the mid of the first half. Everything was going very smooth with Nico Clementz, Arman,Hugo, Paty -of great game-, whenever they controlled the ball and kept it down, One Tree managed to do real harm to Bugils. However ending the first half Bugils had not only one but three very clear chances of equalizing the game. Fortunately for One Tree, Eliseo, Bugil's superstar, was not at its best when trying to end some of those actions, so halftime found One Tree leading by just the min difference.

On the second half it was all One Tree, two more goals came by very good teamwork and then again it was keeping the ball and letting the game died. But of course, this team always needs to suffer, no game is finished till the ref says so, and making 4 substitutions and a more than relaxed attitude allowed Bugils resurrection: 2 goals in 10 minutes! Bugils kept chances till last but it was too late and One Tree had already sent its key players back to the field.

20 sept. BIS DO IT 12 0 ARARIO

Match Headline and Report courtesy of Sid Whyte : Gypsy Duo bag nine as Do It set up for big clash against “Dale’s Deadbeats”...
Well, what can you say about a 12-0 win? The afternoon started to take shape as KO time arrived with only six Koreans ready and as such both Mike Smith and Mark Shortstaff pulled on Korean shirts to get the game under way. From the KO it was pretty clear how the game was going to go as Al ran at the Korean midfield and defence (they managed to get out of the way) allowing a shot on goal within about 4 seconds of play. Within ten minutes the game was over as a contest and simply a matter of how many the Irish duet would get before the final whistle. This week I am going to award all players seven except for Mark and Mike who will get an extra half point for playing for the Korean team.

DO IT 3 3 VIKINGS

Just as we were about to kick out the sky opened up and it started to look as if we for the 3rd time this year would have to cancel due to flooded pitch. And of course the subject of the Viking - DOIT match last season that we never managed to play in full due to heavy rain on all 3 match days. Eventually, we kicked off half an hour late. It would be fair to say that DOIT dominated ball possession and great the better of the chances in 1st half and it was deserved that DOIT went ahead 1 - 0 which also was the
result at half time.

On the first attack in 2nd half Vikings equalized after a neat build up. The match became more even although DOIT still dominated but Vikings was much more competitive than 1st half. That was until Ronan decided to dribble past 3-4 Vikings defenders that decided not to try to take the ball of Ronan but instead roll out the red carpet and the result was predictable. DOIT 2 - 1 Vikings.

Then Vikings was rewarded a penalty. The penalty was strongly disputed by DOIT but that did not prevent Vikings from converting to the score of 2 -2. DOIT. That was the beginning of a good period for Vikings and we went close at two occasions before DOIT regained the better part of the ball passions and continued to create opportunities and chances. But Vikings hit contra and scored to 3 - 2. It seemed that this frustrated DOIT quite a bit judged on the communication level which in the end resulted in a red card to a DOIT player who had a strong urge to share a with the Referee a vocabulary that is not part of the curriculum when having English lessons in Danish schools.

This did - unfortunately - not prevent DOIT to level to 3 - 3 two minutes before time. A goal that Vikings claim was offside so perhaps it evens out the penalty that DOIT claims was not there. At the end of the day we are happy for the draw as DOIT had the most chances and most of the ball possession but on the other hand it is disappointing to give away a goal just before full time against a team that are playing with 10 players. The referee was scored to around 6 and should have credit for not being intimidated by disrespectful players.
- Jesper - Vikings

Match Headline and Report courtesy of Lucas Sheard. Do It Implode versus Freyr, Thor and the Viking Hordes. Do It’s new management team’s 100% record and it’s sublime start to the season was brought to a grinding halt by the ruthless Vikings, whom called upon the Freyr and Thor to provide rain and thunder to provide conditions which suited the Hringhorni employed by skipper Balder ( bearing an uncanny resemblance to Jesper ) to transport the Viking clan into BIS. The conditions merited a delay to start of the game by 30 minutes allowing Do It to have a few more beers and cigarettes, discuss the finer points of Norse mythology and generally inquire where the hell Sol and Frigg were hiding. Little did we know that Balder was using his godly attributes to plan the late arrival of Odin, Tỳr, Borr to play in defence and summon up Njoror ( bearing an uncanny resemblance to Jan ) to play keeper.

To make things worse Balder also summoned up Loki the little trickster who would later fall into a crestfallen heap in the penalty area without being touched. However Balder’s masterstoke was to replace the planned referee Forseti with Hel. Do It’s new management team of Ian Roberts, Al Coulthard and Sid Whyte…..wait on Al and Sid were both spirited away by the naughty Loki……. Do It’s manager Ian had a motley squad to pick from including in form striker Pikey Tigabelas – much more of his disgrace later, and settled for an adventurous 3-5-2 formation. Little did he know he would be playing against 11 onfield Vikings, 2 weather gods and a dodgy referee, so it started 11 v 14.

JAPAN 0 4 GERMAN PLUS

It seemed to be a very one sided affair. German Plus took control of the match right from the beginning. After hitting the post in the 6th minute, one minute later Prince scored and German Plus took the lead. 0-1. Only 3 minutes later it was again Prince who scored. 0-2. After 17 minutes it was Mario, who found the net. 0-3/ Break /Shortly after the break Emir was successful. 0-4.

ONE TREE 3 0 LIONS

A perfect game for One Tree at Isci on Tuesday. Difficult to recall a game where the team created so many goal chances. From the beginning it was all One Tree: ball possession, constant pressure, accurate passing but... when it was about to score our players mismanaged some clear chances. Even more, at the beginning of the match Nico Clementz had the chance to put One Tree ahead on the score by a penalty kick but unfortunately his shot hit the bar.

The team did not get discouraged and kept on playing with same attitude but in spite of the many chances we created we were unable to score and the first half ended with the score 0-0. Unfair.

Second half was more of the same story but fortunately for us we were able to score. Paty, playing again excellent football, dribbled 3 people before kicking a superb shot to give One Tree the long awaited first goal. After that it was easier as desperation for not scoring went away and minutes later Nico Clementz had its own revenge for the penalty missed scoring our second goal with a sweet finishing.

Third goal came from Arman, another great game, after a long shot which had a bit of fortune and cooperation with both the field conditions (wet) and Lions goalie.

All in all a great game, defense seems to be more compact with a couple of new arrivals, Giovanola still a lion on the midfield + the combination of young and experienced players on the attack makes this team a strong contender for the title.
- Guillermo - One Tree
