Hear me now and believe me later

Dear Believers in the Sacred Game of Kick-Ball (aka Congregation of the Church of Super-Hendo),

First of all, let me wish you all Happy Holidays whether you celebrate it or not. Last year, I wrote a piece about loneliness around the holiday seasons and I tried to let any of the heartbroken know that those occasional feelings of despair are only temporary and soon will pass. I had tried to inspire those few individuals who might be feeling that isolated and lonely emotion to know that they are not alone and that life moves on and gets better even when it seems that it just couldn't get any better. Click here to review that issue.

This year, I am visiting at home in the USA until Dec. 28th because Max Belli explained to me that this was the most important time of the year to visit the family and enjoy the season's best. I took him up on that advice and I have to agree that once again Max is correct. Often he is right in his observations on life and one should listen to the actual message that he is expounding rather then being distracted by the goofy look on his face as he expounds it. And speaking of Max, I would like to say something about him and how he changed, not only my perspective on football (which ultimately translates to life in general, as well), but the entire Wanderers side in the process.

When Max joined us a few of seasons ago, after the Italian side went defunct, he brought something with him that we were lacking. By the time that Matteo, Germano and he merged into the Wanderers side in 2003, the club had already established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the JIFL. Starting with the new millennium, the Wanderers had started to become the marquee club of the JIFL dominating the league and the cup competitions and additionally nipping into the 6-a-side trophies around South East Asia along the way. But forgotten during this journey, I noticed, was that element of 'joy' that normally comes with success. The last time that we seemed to display collective feelings of joy was during that year when we won our first championship back in 2002 or so when we destroyed the furniture at D's Place Restaurant and Bar in the Blok after the game that night. Since then winning has been, in my opinion, expected in a sense... until Max came into the team and start spreading his infectious love of life or as the French call it 'L'amour de la Vie'. It was subtle. He didn't just come in and immediately dominate with his exuberance and style. No, it was an elemental glimmer in the eye that seemed to ride perpetually just beneath the surface of the man. It was and is something there within his gaze upon you that seems to elude definition once one tries to identify it. This quality metamorphosis' into his play on the field. This elusive quality that Max possesses (but which he disguises with his endless joking and play) is indefinable. But I recognize it. And now that I have pointed it out then you will recognize it, as well. Some might call it mischievousness but, although he is, it is not exactly that either. The next time that he enters the field, you watch him as he cuddles the ball and changes the perspective on the game. Watch how he turns the match into a intricate contest of flair and fun from an otherwise seemingly endless battle of strength and machismo. And notice how he celebrates those little turns, one-two's, body fakes and short passes that bring all of the other players around him into the game and make them too feel welcome on the field and appreciated as part of the team that celebrates the beauty of the game over the need to win at any cost... his smile is infectatious (another new word that I am adding to the body of English).

In summation, Max has and continues to bring us a great joy that we have either forgotten about recently or a quality that we have been seemingly overlooking as we strive to win one trophy and one more league title season after season in an attempt to make up for all of the misery and humiliation accumulated over the years of defeat and tears that Mike Wildblood, Dave Henderson, and Carl Albillot share collectively. In fact, one might consider Max to be our team's year-around Santa Clause in a sense.

So with that in mind - hear me now and believe me later - Ho, Ho, Ho, Merry Christmas and we will see each other in the New Year,

- The Voice (aka Jules Onana's Hero)

►►This Week's JIFL Wrap-Up

D's Place continues to dominate the standings currently at 19 points with 2 points over the Wanderers (but with a game in hand) and will see off the year 2006 with 2007 JIFL championship dreams in mind. They also boast the league's top goal scorer in Nico Clements who has taken a lion's share of the goals ending the first half of the season with 9 goals to his name. The tricky midfielder Go of Team Japan dominates the most Man of the Matches with 4 to his credit and once again on his way to JIFL All-Star status awaiting around the corner.

Just trailing the league leaders is the ever present Boys of DOIT at 16 points and it should be noted that DOIT are a team never to be taken lightly even without the likes of Mike Wibbley-Wobbley who although out of sight (will never be) out of mind. The Magnificient Vikings are starting to pull away from the Geman Plus and leaving them all alone in the relegation zone by their lonesomes.  Yo... Deutschland!  What Up?

Bugils had most of the ball possession during the match but Knudde's counter attack football paid eventually off. Although there is quite some rivalry between the 2 teams, the match was played in good spirit. The other good news is that Kees is back!
Wouter (Knudde)

On an immaculate pitch at ISCI, a full strength Bugils team turned out against Knudde, the auld enemy. Elwin was at the front with Toni, who together worked well to scare the Bugils defence in the first 10 minutes. Post-match drinks in EP after the game and the Cazbar party have somewhat dimmed my memory of the game, but Knudde went ahead after they broke through the centre and Toni finished neatly. Bugils then came to life and managed several chances and put a lot of pressure on Knudde.

At half-time Bugils were optimistic, and started the second half well. A neat combination between Will and Aris sent Aris wriggling through the Knudde defence to finish very well. Knudde 1 - 1 Bugils. However, the Bugils' pressure was lightened when Will got a yellow for a slightly late tackle (isn't that what 'old-fashioned striker-hit men' are for??) and the Knudde team quickly got a second goal.

As Bugils pushed forward and had several close efforts, the defences opened up and a tussle between Elwin and Hartoyo in the box resulted in a penalty to wrap up the game for Knudde.

With Bugils' league position slipping, the post-match talk (well Huib's post-match talk) is all of diamonds, Christmas trees and the like. So Japan, watch out for the lopsided parallelogram formation which will be unveiled for the first time on Indonesian soil this Saturday!

Another monumental D’s victory this season, as we had never previously beaten Doit. In the second half of last season we managed a 0-0 draw for our first point from them ever. So this victory was well-deserved and about bloody time. D’s scored first with some great passing that ended with Emma scoring. Doit equaled the score after we failed to clear the ball from inside the box and they banged it in. D’s took the lead off a strange play with Nico beating their keeper. We then scored another a few minutes later to really rattle their squad.

They however, scored another loose ball scramble in the final minute to end the half with D’s hanging on to a precarious 3-2 lead. The second-half saw both squads playing inspired football. We dodged a few close calls before D’s striker Joel, hammered a shot from just outside the box that took a deflection off one of their defenders and eluded their keeper that put us up 4-2. After that, they were limited to a few outside opportunities that never reached the target as the D’s defenders stood tall and cleared any loose balls out of danger.
Geoff (FC D's Place)

A rescheduled match against D’s in perfect conditions at ISCI was played out on Friday night. Poor Nick Hayes reported that he only had 12 players – a quick count suggested he had 17, so I’m happy we didn’t play them at full strength! We started with a defensive line up. With the Do It multi tasking manager out due to work commitments, the disjointed backroom staff went for a 4-5-1 line up. The first ten minutes were nervy enough with D’s piling on the pressure, but good tackling by the midfield and defense kept all D’s danger outside the 18 yard box. Do It broke away after 15 minutes, with Big Matt blasting in from 15 yards. Do It 1-0 up against the run of play. It wasn’t long until D’s got an equalizer, which will be talked about for years to come. A monster kick from the D’s goalie led to a mix up at the back. The ball went over Eric, bounced over Sid, who collided with Erwin, who was reported to be claiming the ball. This allowed a D’s player to pass to another debatably offside player, who slotted the ball towards goal. As the ball made it’s way towards goal and with the keeper stranded, it took the courage of my driver, Oki, to jump from the sideline where he was spectating, and run onto the pitch, clearing the ball off the line. In hindsight it was probably the wrong thing for him to do, as there is only one of him, he is 53 and only 5 foot tall, whereas there are 17 (not very happy) D’s players and each much bigger than he. It was also questionable as to whether Oki was actually playing the D’s “sort of scorer” onside when the ball was played through. Anyway, the ref gave a goal.

D’s then took the lead with a chip from the edge of the box. 2-1 to D’s. Things remained tight for most of the half until a strange thing happened; D’s are possibly the team with the most pace in the league, and their African forward must be one of the fastest guys in their team. Now, Eric, playing at centre half received a ball from Sid, which meant that he was last man. Instead of belting the ball away from danger, this 17 year old in the body of a 44 year old tried to out pace the D’s striker. It was a close contest……..for the first metre! It took 2 strides before Eric was beaten in the chase, and thus we went 3-1 down. At this point Bling and myself came off, to be replaced by Lewis Whyte and Rudy. Do It now broke more often and looked dangerous going forward. Within 5 minutes of the switch, Lewis composed himself well to slot home our second goal just before the half time whistle.

Tempers flared in the Do It camp at half time. With no management present, all kinds of permutations and tactics were discussed, and Gareth spat the silvery diamond dummy because of all the F%^k ups. Whatever was resolved worked. For the next 30 minutes Do It dominated the game. For long periods of the second half all outfield Do It players were in the D’s half, but couldn’t create any real chances against a resolute and well organized D’s back line. It was a much better performance although uncapped by any goals. A few other points to note - Lewis Whyte played extremely well. With D’s not holding back on challenges he carried himself well, holding the ball and laying it off with composure. For the last 20 minutes we played with a 2 man defense, where Lucas timed his tackles to perfection, and was the other star performer for Do It. As Do It pushed for an equalizer, D’s broke away and put the game beyond reach with several minutes to go. It was an enjoyable game to play in, against a well organized and well improved D’s side.

Vikings double their meager 3 point sin the last match of the season after Wanderers chickened out the scheduled match against a resurgent Vikings team. Anyway, Bugils were the same old lads as always with a team pretty much Vikings and it turned out to be a very tight match and at occasions also physically without - thanks, to cool heads on both team - turning nastgy. The result was 3 goals to Bikings and i to bugils with Chris not only receiving th only yellow card of the match but also the MoM.

The match began a bit slow as Team Japan was waiting for a few stragglers. German + took advantage of the situation and dominated in the early part of the game. We created some good opportunities on corners and set plays forcing the Japanese to clear several balls off the line. As has been the case so often this season, plenty of excellent opportunities but the back of the net remained elusive for us Germans.

Finally, near the end of the first half, the steely defense of the Japanese broke down and the Germans were finally rewarded for their constant pressure. The ball was crossed in from the flanks and a German + attacker, Team Japan defender and goal keeper all went hard to the ball. The ball ended up at the feet of a German + midfielder who had followed the play in. He passed the ball into an open goal and finally the Germans had found the back of the net.

The second half continued much like the first but with Team Japan having a bit more of the play than they did in the first half as we began to tire. The Japanese counter attacks were thwarted by excellent man to man marking of there primary targets. We had several more very good chances but were denied a "cushioning" goal. Both teams fought well and the game was played in a good, competitive spirit.

The rains of Sentul rolled down from the mountains as the final whistle blew and provided a pleasant back drop as we enjoyed post game sausages and beer. The game and the post match festivities were a fitting sending off for Uwe who is leaving German + at the end of the month. Best of luck Uwe.
Ian (German Plus)
