Getting dirty in the process

Dear Congregation,

Let me apologize for last week's lack of an edition. Uli Pfeil reminded me last night that it is supposed to be a weekly newsletter. Believe it or not, I just didn't have anything to write about... this week, thanks to JIS, I do.

The Natural World -vs- The Created World

Who wants to play golf on Astroturf? Everybody raise your hand if you think that that is a better game then playing it on grass.

Only Americans think that artificial grass is superior to real grass. Ask yourself the question: Do you prefer real sex with another human being or do you prefer virtual sex? It is simply a matter of preference. Some people do not like the fact that they have to intermingle their body fluids with another human being and so they avoid it. And incidentally, some people who play the game of football feel the same way about the surface that they play on. Traditionally, real footballers prefer real natural surfaces and they don't mind getting dirty in the process. They like to wear cleats instead of flats when they play. They like to be able to get under the ball and all of the idiosyncrasies that go with natural surfaces. That has been and is the common definition of being a real footballer actually. If anybody saw the Bayern Munich match last night then you will have seen an 80% possession game from Spartak Moscow versus 20% for Bayern. In fact, Bayern looked like junior players against the Muscovites. They were completely perplexed about how to battle on such a surface. It was totally to Spartak's advantage to play on that surface. And there is no argument to say otherwise unless you just want to be obstinate.

Nobody knows artificial surfaces better than me in this league. I am from the Pacific Northwest. We invented that surface in order for us to have team sports since it is raining most of the time during an ordinary calendar year and surfaces are muddified. I grew up on them. I hate ‘em! They are fake. I like the real thing. On the other hand if the alternative is to play on sand, mud, or ice then, in that case, I, too, prefer artificial surfaces when necessary. Certainly, they serve a purpose.

JIS and the World's Most Loyal Fan
Roland Hitsberger is a mensch. In fact, JIS should build a memorial to that man. He is there every match week after week and year after year. Even players of the team will not show up if they are not playing (which is wrong by the way). But Roland is always there. After watching Andruska's performance last night, I concluded that Roland could probably do just as fair a job as 'Druska in nets. I mean just look at the photo on the right. If that is not a top goalie in the making and a natural one to boot then I am a monkey's uncle. Fan of the Year: Roland Litsberger. I reckon JIS should at least do something for the man. How about make him the team manager if not the goalie?

America
As Butch Koltai and I discussed and concluded: Football will never be able to compete with The Big Three - basketball, American (grid-iron) football, & baseball... then comes hockey, golf, and tennis. But what contributions we have made to the beautiful game. Astroturf.

A Syllogism
Jurrien Sietsma and Wouter Lindner both think that fake grass is better then real grass. Americans love astroturf. Therefore, Jurrien and Wouter must be Americans. That is my final conclusion. [See JIFL talk below]

Take care... discussion to be continued next week.

Best,

Max's Hero

P.S. Thursday evening football is back on at ISCI at 7:30 PM. Everybody welcome. Ronan is the man and plenty of goals is his plan.

P.S.S. Sunday afternoon pick-up 6-a-side matches are on at 5:00 PM at ISCI. Everybody welcome. Gaston is the man and plenty of touches and moves is his plan.

Your Hero

Talking about JIS pitch...

Wouter - "Overall a pleasant game on still - by far - the best pitch of Jakarta"
Dale - "Yeah, the best pitch in the world (if you are not a fan of natural grass)"
Jurrien - "Believe it or not [Dale], but most people don't prefer to play on a bumpy, uneven, injury prone, muddy pitch....unlike you".

Third mid week game of the Season brought us up against the Dutch at ISCI. 17 players turned up for the encounter along with that rare breed of talent & speed we had been missing in defense for the first 4 games, King Grice made his return. The 16 players in the changing room prior to Kick-Off where blessed with a hilarious few story's Ronan & Lucas managed to dig up, very easily by the sounds of it, during the week about a fellow DoIt player....................who was the 17th player to arrive.

We Kicked-off with Irwin in Goals shooting from Right to Left on a nice ISCI surface for a change. For the 2nd game this season it was decided a 3-5-2 formation would best suit us against Knudde and for the opening 25 minutes it was a great tactical decision. DoIt where easily winning the battle in midfield, first to every ball and passing it around nicely. On 5 minutes DoIt slotted home their 13th Goal of the season. Matt found himself at the byline far on the right and a low hard driven cross founds it's way to Rudi, who tried a clever flick between his legs from 6 yards out, only for the ball to find the unmarked Irishman at the back post to open his account for the season.

On 15 minutes a glorious switch of play from the left wing to the right wing by Bling put the ball behind the Knudde defense, perfectly weighted for Eric to Slash I mean Dash on to and put a deep cross to the back post where Matt had time to control then slot away for 2-0 DoIt. On one of their rare sorties forward Knudde found themselves behind the DoIt defense with the keeper to beat but when composure was needed power was chosen and a blast from 12 yards saw the ball crash of the DoIt crossbar and back into play for the clearance. 10 minutes from half-time Knudde where given a life line by the embarrassed keeper. A tame shot from the edge of the box should have been a simple pick-up for Irwin but hot potato syndrome saw him fumble the shot threw his legs and behind the line. Nightmare for Irwin, shear elation for Knudde.

For the remaining minutes we seemed to loose our shape and the talking stopped which Knudde looked to take advantage of but the whistle blew for half time before anymore damage was done. Half Time: DoIt 2 Knudde 1 At half-time a few words where said regarding our shape, I came on for Irwin and we all got back on to the park looking to secure our 4th win of the season. We started the half with a lapse in concentration which allowed the eventual Knudde Man of the Match a surge on goal only to see his shot go narrowly past my left hand post. This woke us up a bit and we began to play with runs up the left wing from Andy and through the middle from Rudi.

A lot of our passes seemed to be finding gaps in the Knudde defense especially on the left side but we were unable to take advantage of it until 15 minutes in to the second half, a great cross from left found Nigelsicky wide open 6 yards out ready to crack the ball home, but just like the Czech midfielder Rosicky had done against CSKA Moscow for Arsenal a couple of nights earlier he stabbed the ball in the direction of the once beaten keeper, to waste any DoIt players chance of the season, fortunately young Andy was on hand to stick the ball in before it fell into the keepers arms, 3-1 DoIt.

With our 2 goal advantage restored we pressed on to finally kill off the game, which Rudi did 10 minutes from time with a well controlled finish to give us a well deserved win. Final Score: DoIt 4 Knudde 1 Back into winning ways after that disappointing fist half performance against JIS which cost us 2 points. Hopefully we can take this form into Saturday's game against Wanders at BIS - Kick-Off 3:30pm Timbo, will you be around for the drinks on Saturday or would you like me to take care of it?

A game of two halves indeed. A high tempo game came to life early doors when Todd twisted and turned & buried the ball from a tight angle at the near post. Yuri pulled one back for D’s with a well taken header from a corner. Then from a freekick from just outside the box Safu scored with a thunderbolt that no keeper on earth could have stopped. This was followed with a nice finish from Max to make it 3-1 and Wanderers were firmly in control of the match. The defence was rock solid and superbly marshaled by Pedro.

The second half was a different story as D’s came back into the match & put the Wanderers defence under intense pressure although they held firm until late in the game. Wanderers continued to go forward early on in the half but were thwarted by the D’s goalie who made some outstanding one-on-one saves to keep them in the match. The match then took a late twist as the ball broke outside the box and D’s player hit a low hard shot that gave Husen no chance of saving. D’s continued to pressure the Wanderers and equalised at 3-3 about 30 seconds before the end of the game from a rather unthreatening cross that looked to be going wide but unfortunately Jules put it in his own net in attempting to clear it. This was a great game as it was very competitive and there were also some superb goals.

Confirm Mike's report. D's came to ISCI for a great game vs Wands and nobody was disappointed.

Bugils started at 6s and 7s with an ever changing lineup as people turned up late. Lions dominated the first 20 and went ahead with a crisp header at the far post after woeful Bugils marking. The arrival of Eli and Hartoyo strengthened our team and we won a penalty for handball. Eli sent the keeper the wrong way, but the ball grazed the outside of the post! The second half started badly as Lions scored within seconds of the kick off and it was Lions 2 up.Bugils, a little bit out of sorts, still managed to push forward and our longball tactics paid off when Eli took a long ball from Toyo well on his chest and slotted the ball home coolly. Although we pushed forward, the Lions were deserved winners and the heroics of JB, our keeper, managed to keep it at 2-1.

The Wanderers squad all arrived early thinking it was a 3pm kick off and the tactic paid handsome dividends as we had time for a warm up. In fact, we were so well-prepared for the match that we even had an ice box full of water and Isotonic drinks, which quite remarkably didn't contain any beer – oh how times have changed!!!

The lack of 'hujan' in recent times meant that the usually good looking pitch was playing a bit dodgy but I guess it was the same for both teams. Some early Wanderers pressure bore fruit when some nice work on the left from Todd resulted in a neat cross that was met from a couple of metres out by Herman, who made no mistake, 1 – 0 to the Wanderers. During the first 25 minutes there was nothing to give the Wanderers any discomfort. The game then seemed to deteriorate somewhat as neither side really dominated, and no clear chances were made – half time.

The second half started much the same albeit with DoIt looking livelier with Rudi and the other Indo on the pitch, and the Wanderers lacking bite in the middle of the pitch. Some theatrical diving gave the referee a hard time but DoIt still couldn't find an equalizer. Wanderers attacked on the break a lot and were rewarded with a fine individual goal from Safu, which eventually saw him walk the ball into the net. DoIt now looked beaten but a well-taken goal (volley I think) from Ronan brought the score to 2 – 1. However, the Wanderers finally killed off the game near the end with a fine chip by Jules over the keeper from quite a long way out.

A tough game with the Wanderers probably deserving the win based on the number of chances created. There was even a spy from D's in the crowd who was taking notes throughout the game. A special thanks to DoIt for happily sharing a few of their beers with us, and thanks to Eastern Promise for all the free beers later as well.

We finally managed to beat JIS after years of losses. As usual JIS started slow and gave Knudde the opportunity to score an early goal. But for the remainder of the first half it was mostly JIS who dominated the game and got the most chances, resulting in a 2-1 lead for JIS at half time. The second half saw Knudde put up a real fight, with chances on both sides. We ended up being on the lucky side this time with a beautiful long range drive from Joris that ended up in the top corner of the goal. JIS may have deserved more, but were definetely weakened through the absence of several key players such as Lee and Jurrien who got injured in the first half. Overall a pleasant game on still - by far - the best pitch of Jakarta.

Pretty even match until the Germans got tired in the second half and the Vikings finally managed to convert chances into goals.
Marvin (Vikings)

German + should have scored several times but did not- seems to be the German + mantra this season. Well played first half by both team with German+ squandering several very easy opportunities. Score was zero, sero at the half. Various changes in the second half to the German squad affected the composure of the team and the Vikings began to pressure consistently. Two header goals later off of set plays the Vikings were up by two. The Germans began to pressure but then gave up an unfortunate goal where the goal keeper kicked the ball into a Viking player while attempting to clear the ball and the ball rebounded into the net. The Germans continued to fight and earned a goal for their efforts. They then pushed several players forward leaving gaps in the defense which the Vikings exploited for the final goal. A physical game that got out of hand at times but tempers were quickly cooled by beers after the match.

In sweltering conditions at Blok M, Bugils turned out in number against the German team with only 12 men and several influential players of previous years missing. Bugils started very brightly and made numerous chances throughout the first half, including a good save from the keeper and a shot blazed over the top from close range. The Germans were suffering in the heat with only 1 substitute and were probably lucky to go in even at half-time. So after a very positive half-time team talk, what did we go and do in the first 3 minutes. Our midfield lost its shape, the quick German forward broke through and was knocked over by Darshan on the edge of the box. To be honest, it looked like a penalty, but the German midfielder placed his free kick nicely round the wall and with their first shot in anger it was Germans 1 Bugils 0. Bugils were frustrated but managed to get back in the game and got a few half chances which weren't on target. Then after a break down the left by Will, he crossed to me on the far post, and being unmarked and five yards out, I managed to head in the top corner. 1-1. The Bugils boys were flying but didn't manage to get a goal in the last 15 minutes. The bartalk was of 2 points lost, but we did well to come back after going behind. The rest of the bartalk was utter nonsense, including Ray spouting his random facts, culminating in a speech on "There's a lot of knowledge in 'ere" and tapping his head. Apparently, if you watch the Discovery channel, you can find out all about homosexual tendencies, how the first oil well was dug 6000 AD(! erm.....!), where the crown jewels are from and which Premiership team wears a Scottish flag and thistle on their shirt. Answers on a postcard to Ray.....

This was one of those games when you never know if you are going to have too many players or not enough. Either way, it is understood that JIS will never give you an easy match. Fortunately for the Wanderers, in this instance, JIS did. Now some may argue that the Wanderers just played outstanding football and have a nice chemistry even if the self proclaimed legend Manny ('I am Cantona') Rawthore and Tom Ten Bellies ('I'd rather play pool on Wednesday evenings') Thomas and SuperDuperPooperScooper Hendo ('Best Player in the World') were not there in attendance.

And JIS did have some chances. Husein saved well on at least three occasions where a lesser goalie would not have. Gordon Boyd seems lonely in mid-field without Jurrien but nonetheless, he showed that he is capable of playing professional football (at least in South East Asia) with that 65 yard sprint with the ball straight through the Wanderers center and finishing inside far post from right side which no goalie in the world could have saved at any level (including Schmeicel).

We had some strong yet relaxed possession and showed a good calmness on the ball from nearly every player in nearly every situation. This is partly due to the fact that JIS did not attack us individually and put us under pressure which is due to the fact that we played it extremely simple and kept the ball moving at all times in little triangular 'keep-away' situations which becomes discouraging for defending players to constantly chase around.

Nico 'TorPedro' Nemelceff played outstanding and slotted a goal out of nowhere that was most professionally taken nearly 27 yards out and precisely lobbed over the ancient Polish goalie of JIS during the 1st half. And Todd took his regular 2 goals to put him back up near the top in the goalscoring race this season. Incidentally, JIS also honored him with a the Man of the Day honors as well. Pedro slammed a low 30 yard direct kick hard and precisely to notch his 1st goals this season. Hernan took one chest-trap to foot and turn-volley from 23 yards out right side, as well for the final finish of the day and which JIS lads commented could be declared a 'tor des saisons'.

Personally, I had a good time with Butch on the field and enjoyed our little combat scenarios. Nowadays, it is little things like that that make my day. Finally, Max was angry (which is rare) with the lack of referee decisions in regards to fouls and reluctance to call obvious penalty situations but keep in mind, the referee is just another guy who never played football so what can any of us expect from him, really?
Dale (Wanderers)

Although Wanderers definitely deserved to win this match, the score line doesn't really reflect the way this game went. An understrengh JIS (without Lee, Thomas, Alaa, Sharif, Doug and Jurrien) started the better team and had 2 glorious opportunities to take the lead. It's an unwritten rule in football that when you don't take your opportunities you get punished and that's what happened. First, JIS gave the ball away in midfield and with the JIS defenders all out of position, it was easy for the Wanderers forward to go around the keeper and score 0-1. Wanderers scored again on the stroke of half time when Nico Nemelceff (a JIS student!!) caught the JIS goalie napping and nicely curled the ball into JIS goal 0-2. Good start for JIS in second half and a fine individual goal from Gordon Boyd got JIS back into the game 1-2. When we were expecting to see more JIS pressure, the goal was scored (again) on the other side. Pedro Nemelceff (yes....the father of that JIS student) scored from a direct free kick 1-3. This turned out to be the killing blow for JIS and Wanderers were cruising after that. The 4th goal Wanderers goal will go down as contender for goal of the season, a great strike on the turn completely surprising the whole JIS defense. Even the JIS players had to applaud this great piece of skill!
