Who can run, when no one can run anymore?

Dear Sufferers of World Cup Withdrawal,

It went by so fast.  Lightning encased in a whirlwind, in fact.  It's like quitting anything addictive and during the first month after it ends, football depression sets in.  In fact, I am so depressed at the moment that I am inviting a guest speaker to perform my duties this week.  This week, expert football technician Bernhard Schumm (also known as one of the finest minds employed in football throughout the history of the world) will serve as my ‘2nd’ and deliver the eulogy of World Cup 2006

But before, I go on any further, let me just say one thing in defense of D's Place Restaurant & Bar located at Blok M on Jl. Pelatehan.  No bar has a finer selection of Fanny according to Tom 'Ten Bellies' Thomas of Wales.  So, although it's no place to watch football, D's Place gets a 10 Star rating on the Happy Slappy Monkey Spank Meter!   And, furthermore, stands as the original king of the puss-bars.  All others are just copies of the master.

Lastly from my part, fittingly, Ronan O'Neill has sent in his take on the Final and the final episode of the Final as well.  It follows Bernie's article.  Please read on....

WOODSTOCK 2006 - THE QUARTERS:

Courage wins!

The World Cup is over - the European Championship starts!

How this happened?  Nobody had it in his calculations:  Brazil goes home.  Argentina goes home.  The semi-finals is a European affair - Germany as a totally underrated team;  Italy the usual suspect;  Portugal with that old warrior-coach; and France which is kept alive by an unbelievable Zizou resurrection.  I dare to point out that no expert or self-appointed TV analyst throughout the entire football universe will say: "I told you so".

The Samba players?  I don't feel sorry for them. The whole tournament they displayed a calculated, economically oriented chess-like play without heart and soul.  There was no intention to inspire, risk or even entertain - just the try to win with a minimum of investment.

The French, in person Zidane, the conductor - Viera, the bouncer and Ribéry, the mailman delivered the bill to the lame and unfit Ronaldo and  Ronaldinho.  The Brazilians learn now , how to loose - but do they learn the lesson?

The Gauchos calculated as well - miscalculated to be precise:  They tried to establish a defensive tactic after their one goal lead and played without inspiration from the second half on.  When a coach like Pekerman acts so courage less (cowardly) - with his coaching and changing of players, to save a narrow 1:0 lead, then it is just a logical punishment to get eliminated by Germany (who is) exactly this team which redefines "courage" during this tournament - through uncompromising fast attacking play - 'long time no see and happy to have you back.' - so to speak.

And England - the self-appointed Center of Football Gravity?
Ah ja - they go back over The Channel leaving the sunshine, bratwurst and beer- back to rain, fish and chips and tea time.  Beckham was sweating for the first time during this tournament?  No, those were tears rolling down his face!

In fact, he again conducted like a (true) Conductor - standing -, and after a long 52 minutes, he had to be replaced because he was 'empty?!  Portugal's keeper Ricardo knew -they already failed in penalty shootouts four times (previously) - WC '90 & '98 , EC '96 & '04).  He only looked angry at them, and - they were missing again!  Only Owen Hargreaves, who got jeered by the English media for his nomination ( the FC Bayern Syndrome?), knew, how to manage to put 'the round thing into the square thing' from a distance of 11 meters. Jamie Carragher had to recognize, that he maybe missed something as a U-12 player - lamenting, ''I didn’t know that the ref has to whistle first''.  And Wayne's WorldDouble Trouble. The son of a boxer goes for an early shower again.  Now he wants to kick his teammate C. Ronaldo at Manchester United in two - because - if it were the other way round, he, would 'never, ever' run to the referee and try to influence him - because 'Ronaldo is his teammate'??!  What about the Chelsea  teammates of Carvalho, the Terrys, Lamberts, Coles - did they take care of their teammate, after Rooney s strike?  So now, the culprit is the one who shouts, ''Thief!'' - not the thief himself.  Is it that England can now be beaten with a wink of an eye from Ronaldo?

I don t know what's wrong here - I really love to watch English football (rather than the silicon wife of one of their players on the grandstand when he's making a throw-in) - so I do hope they go back to their business, and play the game with their unique way and style again.  I really thought we could have a replay of the '66 final - with all this new goal camera techniques - but, the European Championships 2008 is close already.

One word to (former coach) Ericson - who let the Three Lions Team play like he saw it in games like Lazio -vs- Brescia, or so - Everybody back and then the long ball to Crouch or Rooney, and sometimes, Beckham makes a free-kick or a throw-in.  "I am not interested in the way or style we play - only the result counts".  That was his regular quote after every game - now he has to eat his words.  Never had I seen, during so many past WC's such clueless coaching.

This is not the World Cup of the calculating tacticians - this is the time for courage, heart and passion - thank God.

:: THE SEMIS

Tired into the ‘wrong’  or the ‘real’ Final

Great games - physically and tactically at the edge.  Technically?  For sure that a player who plays in the Semis at the WC has 'it' anyway, displaying even simple technical moves on that super high pace we saw in these games is an art in itself - but still - there is Zizou!
Try to recognize how this player in the moment that he is recieving the ball in possession is still thinking ahead, anticipating not only the next move (and moves of his opponent) but even further... The best player of all time - (sorry, Pele, Beckenbauer, Cruyff & Sir Bobby and Diego) - he's the one who has that genius movement with the ball at that extra high tempo, something that was never displayed anywhere previously like that in the past, combined with that effort to lead the team to success.  It's only him, not the French team, who can win the Final, (if he's not too tired by then).

But the Azzuris will have an answer - they always do - make your reservations for free Pizzas at Matteo's, but Matteo, please wait till I'm back in Jakarta in August!!    This game I don't risk a single Rupiah - Roulette is a sure thing - compared.

The Germans and the Portuguese play for 'small titles' - is their such a thing at the WC?
To be 3rd doesn't make you crazy - but it gives you respect.   Something we all involved in this game on any level concerned should practice as a daily routine - like brushing our teeth.  Germany can still be 3rd, Klose can be Top Scorer and Podolski is elected "the best FIFA Newcomer" already.  Small titles - yes - but very respectable.  The biggest achievement anyhow is that the German federation - DFB - succeeded in creating a 'Woodstock Football Festival'.   The older guys should explain to the younger guys what this means.

Can the JISL prevail into this direction?

:: THE FINALS

Who can run, when no one can run anymore?

Ever played a final? - then you know, it's about that and only that.  Tactics? When your legs are gone - your mind is gone.

Who can reach deep down in his pocket and find that little bit of extra effort to give?  Penalties?  That's life.

Bernhard Schumm

... And finally Ronan O'Neill's musings on the final episode of the Final.

Read it all the way to the end, lads ...........Excellent!

Subject: Official FIFA Explanation for Zidane Reaction

Since Sunday evening, the whole world has been debating what Italian defender, Marco Materazzi, actually said to Zinedine Zidane to make the retiring Frenchman react in the way he did. The French captain, in his last ever professional game, thrust his head into Materezzi's chest in Sunday's World Cup Final resulting in a red card and shame for Zidane. Today, with the help of Italian lip-reader Arturo Belladini, we can reveal what drove Zidane to self destruct:

Materazzi was seen to hold Zidane's shirt on the edge of the penalty box in extra-time at which point Zidane said, "Hey, if you want my shirt so bad then you can have it.  After the match, I will give it to you".

Materazzi responded, "I don’t want your shirt you m***** f*****. You're a f****** old man!"

As they jog away, Zidane is seen to laugh at this and it is unclear how he responded due to him having his back to the TV camera.  Materazzi then went on to hit him with a volley of abuse:

"You should've quit two years ago; you're a f****** has-been...

"M***** f*****! Your mum is a f****** Muslim terrorist and you are too, f*** you, old man, f*** you!

"Hey, old man, this arena is not for you anymore.  M***** f****!

"Your sister is a whore and the whole Italian team has f***** her...

"F*** off, you bald c*nt!"

Zidane carries on jogging away still giving no reaction to the Italian's supreme abuse. Finally, Materazzi says one last item, "You are only good enough for Rangers!"

It's at this very point that Zidane turned around and head-butted him.

Hahahaha.  That’s a good 'un, idn’t it?

I hope that you enjoyed this week's newsletter; unfortunately we don't have all of the results yet in this year for the JIFL All-Star voting so I will have to wait to publish one more letter next week which will run down the season highlights and the final result of the voting.  Again, thanks for reading...

All the Best,

D.

:: Game report

Fri.June. 30th ISCI Do It 2 3 Wanderers FC

Scorers : Ronan O'Neill (2) (Doit), Dale (1) (Wanderers), Saphou (1) (Wanderers), Todd (1) (Wanderers)
MOM:
Ronan O'Neill (Doit), Keith Maynard (Wanderers)
Referee appreciation :
7/10 (Doit), 1st half referee was shit and gets a 2 rating for disallowing a perfectly legitimate goal which even the linesman & the DOIT boys said was never offsides. 2nd half referee was most excellent and gets a 9 rating (Wanderers)
Yellow card :  Gareth Withe (Doit)

DOIT lose double header.
With an early KO planned to get everything finished in time for the Germany - Argentina fixture, Doit assembled a slightly depleted squad to play the last game of the 2005/06 season. With Rudy and Fandi turning up late and a last minute call off from Denis it was with some trepidation that Manager McTeir looked around his assembled squad to consider the formation to use. Looked good up front, midfield had strength in depth but it looked like the defence needed some shoring up. Back 5 starting line up of Duncan B in goals, Eric Rback, Andy Centre, Lucas Sweeper and Stuart Lback looked OK and some guys were really up for the game.

KO Delayed slightly as there were no refs! So Wanderers supplied one for the first half and Erwin did the second. No linesmen so offside was going to be a tough game to play. Doit started well with three attacks without reply from the Wanderers. Then about 7 minutes in the wanderers broke and scored a goal against the run of play. Looked like we were back on track for a hammering from the wanderers! Doit did not back off however and continued to push. Wanderers had a perfectly good goal chalked off when the ref called it offside and after about 25 minutes they went 2-0 up. Andy and Lucas were playing well at the back and there was no single weak link in the team and Andy and Matt have to be singled out for their contribution and work rate. Half time 2-0 down but we felt we were still in the game.

The second half started with DOIT attacking to be hit on the break once again about 5 minutes in. Wanderers winning 3-0 and looking well on track to score more. This however was the key to get DOIT started. With advice from next seasons manager ringing in his ears McTeir changed the formation to a more attacking 3-4-3 and we started to take control of the game. This paid of when after some mazy runs at the wanderers defence from Rudy he put a ball across the box which was laid back to Ronan who fired home from 18 yards.

DOIT continued to push and about 10 minutes later we were awarded a penalty. The fracas before the spot kick resulted in one of the wanderers getting his second yellow of the night (RED) and Gareth being dismissed for 20 minutes to cool down. Eric ran the fastest he had done all night to try and get the penalty but Ronan took the opportunity from him and converted the spot kick to make it 3-2. There were 10 minutes remaining and we were chasing the game. There were several half chances but the pitch condition caused bobbles just before the attempted strike and none of them came off as planned.

The final whistle blew and DOIT were condemned to runners up once again. In summary the wanderers were a strong side but we came back and gave them a bit of a fright. Once again DOIT have nothing to fear in the league and on our day we can compete with the best. Third in the league and runners up in the cup, same record as last year, however this year we did go one better and won the Knudde sixes so my management record is not to bad compared with my predecessors. A few beers at ISCI and them a quick dash to Satu Lagi to watch the world cup.

DENIS CLARKE will be taking over as manager of DOIT next season. He has only agreed to do it for DOIT if he is assisted by Ronan and Sid and I have assured him that that assistance would be forthcoming. I have handed over the Balls / Strips / Trophies to Ronan as well as the club funds which Denis is allowed to spend (wisely) in the closed season and 1 million should get him quite a bit out here. Keep your eyes and ears open for new young players and nab them as soon as you can.

It is time for me to sign off as manager and I would like to express my thanks to the many who make DOIT what it is, a bunch of talented footballers who enjoy playing skilled competitive football, and are nice guys with it. I have been helped by Tim every week with the refreshments, and have been advised by all at some point in time, but have especially appreciated the advice of Denis, Nick, Sid and Lucas. It has been a privilege to be associated with you all and I hope that you can forgive me for the choices that I have made if they have upset you. I did what I though best at the time for a club who has the tradition of being one of the top expat teams in Jakarta. I know I will see some of you again and you are all welcome to visit us in Cairo while we are there. Good luck and best wishes for next season.

Over and Out

Mick McTeir DOIT United manager 2004/05 - 2005/06

Game served as a double header meaning that it was the actual Cup final and the last league match for both sides for the 2005-06 season.

Good match in the first half from the Wanderers with a domination ratio of 60 / 40 percent possession-wise.  Pace set by the Wanderers with 10-20 passes exchanging feet around the field before an attack would be attempted. Very patient build-up with no doubt inspired by watching the World Cup matches for the last two weeks. Occasionally, Mike or Pedro would forget that they are actually who they are (and not actual World Cup players) and the passing game would break down when one of them would stubbornly hoof a ball (for no reason other then obvious 'ball-panic') up field into the DOIT defensive paths.

Outside of that, it was a most excellent standard set for the rest of the match.  Two goals scored by the Wanderers seemed a pretty comfortable cushion at half-time. Then Todd (Wanderers Rookie of the Year) snuck yet another in just around 5 minutes into the 2nd half. Seemed that the game was over but DOIT, being the experienced side that they are, turned the match around by emulating the constant passing game that the Wanderers had developed in the 1st half. Then Ronen and a few of them started to kniggle away at Matteo (who can be volatile at times). Strategy worked and Matteo got sent off after a 2nd yellow card (could have been a 3rd even) only 15 minutes into the half.

Then the tide completely turned.  DOIT looked like the Ivory Coast against Holland in the 2nd half and mounted wave after wave of attack. Rudy and Fandi were outstanding in turning the defenders and setting up Ronen (who always gets a couple against the Wanderers) for his two goals. If the match lasted just five minutes more then I am sure that it would have ended 3-3 and went to penalties and then DOIT would have broken the streak of the Wanderers Cup wins and sent us home in tears.

Notes

1.)  That was Keith Maynard's last match in the JIFL as he has packed 'em off to Singapore (although perhaps he will be back on occasion when his new Singaporean club allows him to come on loan sometime in the future).

2.)  As mentioned, it seems Ronen always scores against the Wanderers and always gets the Man of the Match honors.  He must be a good player.

3.)  Mick McTeir, sadly, is also leaving and packin' 'em off to Egypt. The Scottish of Jakarta may never get organized again.
