Wrapping up the season...

JIFL Cup Final tonight at ISCI !

Dear Football Avengers,

It has recently come to my attention that it is nearly the end of the season. In fact, tonight the JIFL will be wrapping up the season with an event that perhaps shadows the actual World Cup '06 final itself.  Tonight at ISCI kicking off at 19:00 PM, Friday June 30th, is the annual JIFL Cup Final '06 starring once again for the 5th consecutive season in a row, the almighty Wanderers and the repeating finalist of last year DOIT Satu Lagi.  Last season, the Wanderers edged out DOIT 1-0 in an excellently played final by both sides. It was a final of the highest standard and we expect this contest to be even better.

The DOIT boys, led by the JIFL 2005’s Manager of the Year, Mick McTeir, originally had a shaky start to their season this past year but, as usual, fought back to win a more than respectable 3rd place finish with 33 points in the league ending with a 6-4 victory over the totalistas footballistas of Knudde last Saturday. Knudde, led by Wouter Lindner (the 6th Dutch coach in the World Cup this year), finished the season with 32 points in a dead heat with the Lions at 4th place and a single goal separating the two sides.  Both will qualify for the Champions League next year and it will be good to see the draw when we get back together next August.

If you didn’t know already, (because I never announced it) the Wanderers took back the league title from JIS this season and collected their 3rd championship in the past four seasons.

So, let me invite all of you everywhere out to enjoy the JIFL Cup final Friday evening live at ISCI kicking off at 7:00 PM in the evening.

The following list is the places that I have watched football during the World Cup. I have rated them with a self explanatory ‘star’ system (the more stars, the better):

BuGils
Probably the best place to watch football in Jakarta. The absolute best atmosphere indoors or out in the mini stadium.

Top Gun
Generally good atmosphere. Better now that they have taken down the wall that separated the disco. Lots of LCD and Plasma sets and a projection screen as well.

Sportsman’s

Always good for sports viewing. Just make sure that they don’t bring your food cold to your table.

Mad Dogs

Another good place to watch the football. Big screen, happy hour prices and good menu selection.

D’s Place
Forget it. No thought put into any football action for the 4th year in a row. Probably the worst place to watch football in Jakarta. Unbelievable. They need to put a motto up when you walk in that says, ‘D’s Place -Where the customer is always wrong.’

Amadeus – Sudirman

100 inch screen and excellent views of the city. Good place to watch football and excellent food.

Satu Lagi -Hotel Krystal

One of the better places to watch football with a lovely outdoor garden and huge screen as well. Happy hour prices and a rugged Scottish bar manager who will give you a good argument if you say anything controversial…

JIFL EOS Party:  Lastly, if you were all wondering about when the Annual JIFL End of Season Party was going to be then let me inform you that the captains and managers of the league voted (for the first time in history unanimously) on having an End of Season / Beginning of Season party this year in mid-August. So it will be a EOS – BOS JIFL party. This works better since everybody is already busy with the World Cup and can’t be bothered at this time. This will give us a chance to assemble our squads together and get everybody the news and updates in one place at one time.

----------------

OB – JIFL Golf Tournament:  I haven’t forgotten the JIFL golf tournament either.  We will have it planned by then and execute it within a week after the party in August. Keep in mind that each JIFL team will need to submit two teams of 4 players in order for us to be able to make it a proper golf event in conjunction with OB Golf  & Lifestyle Magazine who are experts in planning such events Teams will wear their football jersey's during the tournament and we will mix the pairings in order to keep the DOIT boys from cheating.  Start practicing now.  Lil' Derwood Kelso is available for clinics and lessons.  Call him at 0813 83621 671 to make an appointment for a lesson. He's an excellent coach.

Next week will be the final edition of the Newsletter for this season. I have prepared some highlights and lowlights of the season. I also hope to have our JIFL All-Star team line-up available by then.  Meanwhile….

See you all at the Cup final…

-Dale

Referee appreciation :
8/10 (Doit)

Ten goal thriller see a finish to what is now almost definitely Mick Whibleys last game for DOIT united.  The league stalwart and ISCI top scorer for 5 seasons in succession, soldiered through with broken ribs and a groin strain to help DOIT attain third place in the JIFL 2005/06 League.

A large DOIT squad gathered at the Jakarta equivalent of the Allianz stadium, the finely manicures playing surface of BIS. On a cloudy but muggy day over 17 players turned out, having got wind of the upcoming final (pot hunters). The squad looked strong up front and in midfield but with Sid Whyte and Nick Czolak absent the back four looked a bit unusual to say the least. Comprising Eric (I been out on the lash and I can see two balls all the time!!!) and Mike Whibley (as previously mention carrying several war wounds, they must be rough up in Singapore) in the centre and Duncan G at left back and Timbo at right back, it was obvious from the start that any kind of pace would give us a problem. Midfield also had Denis and Matt in the middle with a bemused Ronan asked to go out left. Anyway off we went and Knudde nearly done us in the first few minutes, just before, Rudy was found in a quick break which he finished well against the run off play, 1-0 DOIT.

The game continued in a similar theme, Knudde pushing and probing only for us to hit them on the break and as if by carbon copy replay it was 3-0 within about 15 minutes and they were all scored by Rudy. Assist's from Gareth, Denis, and Mick.  Still in the first half Rudy became provider for a change, returning a nice one two with Ronan which Ronan tucked away. 4-0 and we were cruising, although if you were watching a bystander and listening to the abuse that the rest of the team were giving our back four, you wouldn't have though we were in such a commanding lead. Rudy promptly subbed himself for Fandi. Two avoid scoring too many. Our Back four looked hesitant and if Denis said "get it out!" once he said it a thousand times. This frailty was exploited just before half time with a nicely timed run onto a long ball which was flicked over the oncoming Duncan B to make it 4-1. Commendation has to go to Matt Parking who worked tirelessly and challenged like a terrier. Also Ricardo had returned from an extended visit to the states where he obviously was not having children's portions.  He was brought on but had to be quickly substituted before the duck hunters turned up!!!

4-1 half time and Whibley was rightly scared.  Recalling what feels like more than Twenty years worth of games against the mighty Knudde he reminded us of our recent history against them and how close and high scoring the games had been.  It was as if Knudde had been listening to Mike at the start of the second half, when they came out and scored a quick Goal.  Fandi replied with a fine goal cutting in from the left and dribbling all the way into about 1 yard out and six yards left of the goal, just when you thought a cutback was on he fired it into the top of the net from an impossible angle.  5-2. Then Knudde struck back with another breakthrough goal to make it 5-3. The game was poised until several new boys were used including Stuart Gray (striker and left back) and ultimately it was decided to throw on the DOIT equivalent of Wayne Rooney.

New signing Mike Smith who is recovering from Meta-tarsal of the knee was risked in this crucial game and within 5 minutes had notched up his first goal for Doit United (more effective than Rooney then). He controlled the ball in the box with a fine first touch and composed himself before firing home hard and low to make it 6-3 and give DOIT a bit of a cushion.  But Knudde were not finished with yet another goal to rock the back four which had now comprised McTeir, Ronan, Stuart and Whibley. One player present in both line ups mentioned, can you spot who it is children?!!!!  Anyway the final whistle blew and DOIT had secured 3 rd place in the league with 33 points from 19 games played, piping Knudde and the Lions by 1 point.

Lastly just to point out that Whibley increased the pressure on the team by advising us all prior to KO that DOIT had never in their history been outside the top 4 in the league and that McTeirs management record could be the worst in club history if they didn't win. Also he advised us that Knudde were no walkover and were capable of scoring many goals. The fixture was played in the right spirit though and enjoyed by all who took part, no injuries prior to the cup final this Friday at ISCI KO 7pm.
Mick (Doit)

We congratulate DIU with the 3rd place, well deserved in a match where the DIU tactics were better than ours. I guess, it was not the best week of Dutch football....
Wouter (Knudde)
