:: Edito

For your country

Dear Footooligans,

Firstly, let me apologize for my sporadic writing behaviour over the last couple of months. It is true that I have been putting out the edito only once every two weeks but staggering it so that it actually looks like I am getting them out on a weekly basis. I am sure that this is the way that most company's employees in the world actually behave as well. You must realize of course, that between full time at the Singapore International School (a teacher of proper English grammar, English literature & writing {naturally}) and my duties with Euro Soccer Excellence, I am often very tired by the end of the evening and uninspired to write anything useful.

Now, don't get me wrong. I want to complain about all of your unsportsmanlike behaviours and I want to make fun of all of you on a daily basis simply because that just might be my real purpose in life.  Unfortunately, I am just so busy at the moment that I find it hard to do so properly. So bear with me for the rest of the season and I will get back to sarcasm and satire as the occasions arise in the near future.  And keep in mind, like all of you, I, too, am only getting better with age.

Now, on to the JIFL Cup stuff:

The Youngsters of DOIT meet the Magnifico Vikings in the quarterfinals while former champions JIS meet up with the Indominable Indomitables - the Lions. Obviously, the winners of each of those matches will meet in one of the semi-finals while the other semi-final finds current league leaders Wanderers facing off with the Totalarios Footbalistas of Knudde

We are planning a June 10th JIFL Cup final. The venue can either be Stadium Senayan or ISCI. This has yet to be decided under mutual agreement between both club finalists. I will let you all know the result of the decision so you can book your vacations around it.

As for the JIFL League stuff:

Dang.... if those Googlie BuGilies haven't done the business all year. They finally took out Knudde in another league derby and then just narrowly lost last week 1-0 in the Cup quarterfinals to the same. They have enjoyed a grand season that hasn't ended yet. Tomorrow they play their final match of the season at Stadium Olah Raga against FC D's Place. And closely behind them are the X-Pats who clobbered the Knudders last Wednesday night at Stadium Pasar Raya 3-1. Well, done to both of these clubs this season. Nobody takes either of them lightly anymore as the Wanderers previously and famously found out this season a couple of months back.

Now, about the rest of the month:

We are all finishing up our last league matches and the focus now starts to aim at some 6-a-side celebrations coming up shortly. Next weekend is the Knudde 6'ers on Saturday, May 20th. If you haven't let Wouter know that your club is in then send him a message now - click here. Following that tournament comes the Bali 6'ers, Saturday, May 27th being held at the new Canggu Club in perfect conditions.

And finally, the 6-a-Side season climaxes with the first ever World Cup 6'ers tournament being hosted by ISCI on Saturday, June 3rd. You will not represent your club in this tournament. You, like Ronaldino will be doing this June and Pele did before him, will be playing for your country surrounded by your own gene pool. That, my footballing friends, is going to be an exciting day. It is going to be so interesting to see each nationality playing alongside their own for once. We have got to film this!

So if you are sponsoring or playing for your country in the World Cup 6'ers then please let us know immediately. Contact me - click here.  Thanks, again, for reading. That's all for the moment. Again, sorry for the delays but keep in mind...

I've been BUSY!

Dale

Sat. Apr. 22th ISCI Wanderers FC 3 1 German Plus

Scorers : Dave Henderson (2) (Wanderers), Jules Onana (1) (Wanderers)

Unfortunately for JIS a famous meltdown did not take place. A torrential downpour not long before the game left the pitch heavy with lots of surface water, which even the rugger boys had difficulty playing on. The best game of the season it was obviously not – but the first half saw the Wanderers get off to the perfect start with Dave Henderson latching onto a defensive header and hitting a left foot volley into the back of the net. However, the rest of the half was only notable for the Wanderers profligate finishing and mean defence. Then late in the second half and slack Wanderers defending from a free kick, after Husen parried the original shot, saw German+ equalize.

A game of two haves it was as the Wanderers really moved up a few gears in their quest for that valuable point and a third league title. They kept their shape and concentration while controlling the game. The supporters thought it was all over; and it was (bar the fat lady singing) when Manny passed neatly to Dave Henderson who ran from midfield and coolly rounded the keeper and slid the ball under him. The Wanderers supporters in the stand were whipped into a wild frenzy as the boys in black ‘n’ white made sure that the script had a happy ending: with Jules slotting in the third goal.

It was kind of fitting that the team duly retired to the Eastern Promise (scene of the night of long knives!!) for celebratory drinks on the day that the once worst expat team in JIFL history (1994-1999) entered into Jakarta footballing folklore claiming its third league title in four years, which will look superb in the new trophy cabinet currently under construction.

Double Header, Triple Score

It was a very very hot day out at Bintaro on Sat but two valiant teams gathered for a feast of football in a league and cup double header. Expats struggled to have a full team so DOIT gifted them a keeper as they had two in the squad. It was surreal at the KO as Doit initiated the game and the Expats stayed in their own half as though they were unsure we had started. Doit kept possession for the first few minutes and the viewers (all three of them) started to shout "Ole" with every pass. Eventually the Expats pulled themselves into the game and things started for real. Doit were playing the ball around well in the first 15 minutes and were always going to create some chances.

Our first goal came from a rare piece of Irish-English cooperation. Ronan actually passed the ball (stop). To the "lanky bling boy", With who tucked it away into the bottom left hand corner passed a sprawling Erwin in goals. I looked like there was nothing on but the big boy up front must have seen an opening and slipped it in there!!! Phnar, Phnar. A second quickly followed and it was a cracker. Ronan picked up the ball in midfield and from about 30 yards out hit a screamer into the top corner. Expats made a few dangerous forays into the Doit half and had a couple of one on one chances while our defence we sleeping, but could just not get it past BIG DUNC in goals.

After a strong start , Doit lost their way a bit and if the Expats had scored one of these chances the game could have turned out quite differently. NZ Schoolboy cap Isaac had to rest as his Asthma was playing up and young blood Andy Ward asked to come of because he was tired (must still be growing at 17 years). One other notable point was when "Old Pro" Denis Clarke was taken out by a sniper inside the Expats box. It was just as he was trying to perform complicated drag back turn combo when the sniper struck. He hit the deck like the proverbial "tun o bricks" and spend the rest of the afternoon looking up at the surrounding trees trying to locate the sharp shooter. But as it was we went into half time with a 2-0 lead. Thunder was rumbling all around at half time and we had an extra 5 minutes break to let the storm subside as Denis' lightening meter was flashing like a disco (this helped Eric feel at home).

Spurred on by the return of Gonzo (Lucas Sheard) to the team we restarted the second half with Gusto. Also Matt parking looked solid in defence and Eric and Tim looked wobbly but they always do! 10 minutes passed and DOIT were piling on the pressure and this led to another goal when the ball fell to Rudy 3 yards out. It was only just a goal, as when he hammered the ball from 3 yards out it struck the underside of the bar!!!! This goal settled the nerves and DOIT started to play some the fine football they can from time to time and everyone started to enjoy the afternoon (apart from the expat players, who were getting a bit of a run-around).

Gareth who was hungry for goals scored two fine goals from the edge of the box with the kind of finishing you only see in the premier league games, one cutting in from the touchline and another from open play. He had to leave early (as he had a HOT HOT DATE) otherwise I am sure he would have scored more. Apparently he had to get to his Swiss bank account to withdraw his bling for the evening! Rudy and Fandi then tried very hard to score with any half opportunity they had much to the detriment of the other players in the team who were in great positions for a cut back or two, but the Indo boys had blinkers on! Our last goal fell to our young Irishman who after a fine through ball from Player / Manager McTeir, took a fantastic first touch to set himself up for a great finish. Old Pro Clarke was overheard to say "where has that first touch been all season". In the final few minutes there were three notable events

Sid scythed down JP in the box with a huge smile on his face because he thought he would just take him out for the fun of it, the resultant penalty was saved by BIG DUNC.

Ronan employed "jug avoidance by missing a sitter that would have given him a hat trick
Lucas set up McTeir with the final kick of the game and was expecting a pass back for him to score (he is still waiting for it)

Final score 6-0 AND N ASSIST FOR Sid Whyte who late rin the bar was claiming assists for more than half the goals, however his team-mates do not remember his participation in the game apart form giving away a penalty. Sheard declared it to be his last game this season but was pleased he had passed the fitness test on his dodgy knee. Everyone had a good game and we played some of our best football but with some tough games ahead we need to build on the confidence. Last comment we must be more prepared to pass in front of goal for the better of the team rather then for self gratification.

Sat. Apr. 29th Blok M Bugils Knudde

Scorers : Toni (1) (Knudde)
MOM:
 Hussein (Bugils), Toni (Knudde)
Referee appreciation :
7/10 (Doit)
Yellow Card :
Hussein (Bugils), Pascal Hieselaar (Knudde), Nico Oroh (Knudde)

In ridiculous heat at 2pm on Saturday, Bugils faced Knudde in the quarter finals of the cup. Knudde were stronger than they had been when we beat them in the league, and Knudde made most of the early running. Knudde deservedly took the lead with a well-placed freekick from the edge of the area after 20 minutes. Bugils continued to work hard up front (Will and Neil) but the midfield were struggling to get up and down the pitch and as a result the front lads had little support. Ipal made a great run down the left after a sloppy clearance by Knudde but his lofted shot over the keeper hit the crossbar! 0 - 1 at half-time.

The second half saw Knudde dominate the midfield finding plenty of space in the middle and the two nippy forwards causing problems for our back line. On a couple of occasions, Hussein (deservedly MOTM for us) saved us. We did make a couple more chances (a header off the bar from Will and Eli putting wide with the goal beckoning) but as Bosky (dejectedly) said after the game, "when it's not your day, it's not your day".

I think Knudde deserved the win on the balance, but in typically Bugils style we ended our season (well, still 1 league game to go) with an end of season bash at Bugils. Notable awards included: Neil Donovan (players' player of the season, top scorer and best goal), Graham Garven (most improved player) and of course Raymond Googlie Google, aka PAPA RAY, winning most loyal player and receiving most nominations for funniest moments of the season (the winning incident was the spectacular 'the ball's too heavy/slippery, i can't get it over my head, i'm going to drop it behind me' throw in against Japan, captured for eternity on video!).
Mark (Bugils)

Knudde was looking for revenge for the 3-2 loss earlier in the year and got what it wanted. Bugils came out with a very strong starting line up but did not manage to break the Knudde defense. Before half time Toni scored a beautifully executed free kick over the small Bugils goalie. In the second half both team had chances to score, but wasted numerous opportunities, so Knudde was on the lucky side this time. The match was witnessed by hundreds of school kids all wearing orange pants........ it helped.

Scorers : Shunin (1) (Japan)
MOM:
Mr. Max (G+), Mr. Suda (Japan)
Referee appreciation :
7/10 (Japan)

It was a game in the very severe rain. It was not the condition that a normal game could be done.
Kagami (Japan)

German plus team eager to play, after the long trip to Sentul, even considering the condition of the pitch, at kick off the field was 50 % flooded with rain at the end 100 flooded, the spectator stand between
both fields became an island.

A special thanks to the Japanese team, who actual did not want to play but after all German Plus player were on the field agreed to proceed with the game .

Sat. Apr. 29th Blok M  D's Place 0 3 Wanderers

Scorers : Saphou Lassy (Wanderers), Dale (1) (Wanderers), President (1) (Wanderers)
MOM:
 Referee (Wanderers), Nico (D's Place)
Referee appreciation :
4/10 (D's Place)

First 20 mins pretty tight game until Manny scored first. Half time 1-0. Second half got bit feisty - Dave tackled from behind in box and Dale scores from resulting penalty. Tackles now flying in from D's - mostly illegal - not pretty. President heads in a cross for 3 - 0. Game over.
Mike (Wanderers)

This was the first lost D's has suffered this year. We've been playing exceptionally well of late. This was true for the first 30 minutes of our game against the Wanderers. We had some splendid opportunities to open the
scoring but failed to beat their keeper. He played extremely well early on and was the difference in the match. The Wanderers opened the scoring when the D's defenders failed to pick up the extra man. Half time score, 1-0
Wanderers. In the second half we weren't able to generate any real scoring chances. Hendo was hauled down in the box for a penalty kick, after the referee failed to notice the oppositions hand ball. Their third goal was
from their ex-professional player who scored the first. D's made sure everyone on their bench had a game. Another dubious refereeing match which favoured the opposition.
