One of the best
days of the year
Dear Extras in a Football
Film,

The World Cup is coming! The
World Cup is coming! The World Cup is coming to ISCI and you
can represent your country.
The World Cup 6’ers is
definitely slated for June 3rd. Everything good is being
expertly planned for that celebratory day of footballissimo. Starting with
a late kick-off at 9:00 AM on the Saturday, and continuing all day with
the ‘football party of the year’ following the tournament. Incidentally,
we will provide real national team kits of your country. The only things
that the players need to bring are football boots & shinguards. Everything
else will be provided by ISCI and ESE.
The month of May is dedicated to
6-a-side tournaments all over south East Asia. First of all, we have the
Singapore tournament on May 13th – 14th. I realize
that only a select group actually play in this competition but, even so,
it is a start. But then the following week of May 20th,
Knudde is hosting the big one for clubs. It’s one of the best annual
tournaments in South East Asia for clubs and will again be held at Sentul.
The week after that on May 27th, Island Sportz is
hosting the Bali 6’s at the new Canggu Club sports complex. This
tournament is growing every year and more and more of the JIFL teams are
showing interest and participating in the event. Not only that but the new
sports complex where it is being played is fantastical (I know
already that it’s not a word but I like the way it sounds and, therefore,
I am adding it to English language).
But the World Cup 6’ers…? Why
is this considered different? Because this is the tournament where we
leave our beloved behind and battle for our country’s honor in great
contests of fantastical strength. Now, interesting enough, some countries
are already organized and ready to go for it. I have already gotten calls
from several interested captains / managers who organized their pride and
are ready to pay the entrance fee. For example, I got a call a few weeks
back from Pedro who asked if Ecuador can enter. I told him
the rules, and he immediately answered, ‘Fine. I got the Ecuadorians
ready. Now where do I pay the fee.?’ Done deal. Other countries needed
a bit of prodding. For example, the Welshmen. They’ve known about this
tournament being organized for a while already but still the two of ‘em
haven’t budged. One can’t get off of his couch while the other can’t get
out of his pub.
Let me tell you something... at
the moment there are only 24 spots open for registration. This means that
the first 24 registered are represented at this year’s World Cup.
At the moment, I know that
Scotland is already organized. I know that Cameroon is already
organized. And I know that Germany, Japan, Korea, Holland, the USA,
Ireland and Indonesia are being organized as I write this
article. That leaves just 14 spots left over.
Honestly, the only national team
that I am actually worried about is England. It seems that all of
the English want to play for their country which is a good thing. But is
it actually the best thing for your country? With only 12 playing spots
open per team, I would suggest that a meeting of the English gentry needs
to be held where collectively you all decide how you want to do this. Should
you elect your 12 best Englishman to represent your country and others
serve in a managerial and logistical support roles? Or perhaps you have
another system which could work equally well…? I would suggest that with
so many players apparently available then that the English should try to
create two teams with the 2nd team serving as alternates for
the 1st team squad. This might save the English from breaking
each other’s necks over who plays for the Queen come June 3rd. The
one thing that we want this tournament to do is to unite us (like the
actual World Cup is designed to do) rather than divide us. It will be one
of the best days of the year for all of us whether we play or not.
So, all of the rest of you boys
need to think about your homelands as well and consider what role you are
going to play in the overall best efforts for your country to win the
World Cup 6’ers - 2006.
- Your Hero

7/10 (Vikings: We think he did a
decent job although we understand that Bugil’s is of the opinion that a
couple of situation warranted penalties)
The sun was shining at the same time it was raining just before kick
off on a Sunday afternoon and to top it of a strong wind was blowing along
the field so it felt all wrong to be playing football considering it was
Jakarta. However, we started with some decent football on a somewhat
difficult and bumpy pitch and we soon scored just to have the goal
disallowed for a questionable offside. But we at least created chances.
As so often before we against the run of play we went down 0-1 after some
pretty awful defending but that did not subdue a decent Viking side. When
Ronaldo after a few less well timed attempts managed to beat Bugil’s
offside tactic he gave the goalie no chance when he slotted in the
equalizer. Matthew soon after won us a penalty, which we managed to miss
but he took matters in his own hands by beating the Bugil goalie to a long
ball and scored to 2-1. Kenny in one of his usual strong runs managed to
break through Bugil’s right hand side and crossed the ball into the box
where Jonathan arrived just in time to score on a controlled volley giving
Vikings the half time lead of 3-, We had played some quite decent football
and had created chances for another 2-3 goals.
Bugil’s adjusted their formation for second half and put us under quite a
bit of pressure but hardly managed to create any open chances although we
gifted Bugils to many corners and free kicks in dangerous positions. With
the clock winding down Matthew scored his second goal of the match on a
very nice little flick at the front post that caught the entire Bugil’s
defense on the wrong foot. Final score was 4-1 with Matthew and Ulf as the
prominent players in a good team effors

A
nearly full strength Bugils team took the field against 9 men Expats
in this '6-pointer' clash at the bottom of the table. It was a shame that
Expats weren't at full strength, but their 9 men certainly worked very
hard against us. For the first 25 minutes, Bugils had plenty of chances,
but some wayward finishing led to frustrations on our part. Expats had to
rely on counter attacks but rarely troubled Bugils. Finally, Bugils opened
the scoring and quickly added a second before half-time.
Given that we were 3-1 at half-time in the first meeting this year and it
ended up 3 -3, we were keen not to let the same happen. Thus, we raced to
a 4-0 lead at the start of the second. The 10th man had arrived for Expats
(Manuel) and he injected some urgency and flair into the team, whilst the
Indonesian right-winger has some success attacking our left flank. Expats
deservedly got a goal back, but Bugils continued to create chances and put
a couple more away to make it 6-1.

The local Kampong surrounding ISCI and the drivers only had one thing
on their mind, the game between the current league holders JIS and the
fearless Wanderers. When still pitch dark at five to eight the JIS players
wondered if this was a secret tactic to keep them in the dark.
The bookies were laying odds – lots of pre-match hype – JIS needed a win
to keep their championship challenge alive – Wanderers wanted a win to
virtually reclaim the title but a draw would not be disastrous. The
whistle blows – the battle is on – enthusiastic Wanderers show their hand
immediately – closing down the JIS players quickly and tackling hard. The
aging Wanderers back four included Captain Carl and Manager Mike as well
as Pedro "Crazy Horse” and the World Cup veteran Jules – and little did he
realise in Italia 90 that he would be finishing his playing days with a
bunch of drunken expats in Jakarta.
The US pronged strike force of Dale and Todd were working in tandem and
besieging the JIS penalty area. The pace was unerring – not a game for the
faint-hearted with old hand Super Hendo back in the engine room playing
like a man possessed and the denizen of dribble Todd twisting and turning.
Chances come and go at both ends. Wanderers have a handball shout for
penalty turned down. Slowly boys, says Carl, take it easy. Don't mess
things up. Remember the plan. Goal…..Todd poking it in just out of reach
of the keeper.
Half time – faint smiles appear on the faces of some Wanderers players.
More end to end action ensued with Husen called into action as a sweeper
closing down some menacing JIS attacks, and handling the ball well all
night. Wanderers kept pressing for a second but to no avail although Max
hit a rasping shot which the keeper parried to safety. JIS searched for an
equalizer but the boys stood firm.
Midfield hanging in there – Chris working his cotton socks off covering
acres, with Manny nullifying JIS movements through the middle as JIS
struggled to provide much support for Lee and Boydy. By now the boys were
hollering for the final whistle. The night belongs to the Wanderers. One
more point required to secure a 3rd league title.
Mike (Wanderers)
Another JIS-Wanderers clash, with JIS looking to put the heat back on
the leaders. A win would put the title-holders level on points, with the
Wanderers holding a game in hand.
The Wanderers started brightly, with their young left winger causing all
sorts of problems out wide. Only some desperate JIS defending led to a
succession of throw-ins, corners, and clearances. JIS began to get into
the game, but insisted on mostly playing the ball through the middle,
leaving the Wanderers back four little to do but watch the ball sail over
their head, only to have their Indo keeper scoop up anything dangerous.
The insertion of Sherif on the left side did cause some problems; his wide
runs giving a couple of half chances to JIS.
3o minutes in, The Wanderers finally struck. A throw in was nodded on by
Manny, and fell at the feet of an off balance JIS defender. His
half-missed volley saw the ball spiral back towards goal, where the
Wanderers’ young winger was first to pounce, scrambling the ball over the
line in front of a delirious (temp of 3* at game time) Andreas. : 1-0
Wanderers.
The first 15 minutes of the second half saw JIS put their best pressure of
the game on goal, forcing a series of acrobatic moves by the Wanders
keeper, who time and again came expertly off his goal line to take the
ball off the feet of a would-be JIS attacker. The Wanderers countered with
some success, though Andreas managed to save several hard and low drives.
JIS’ best chance came with 10 minutes to go, when good pressure by Slusher
and Landes produced a lay back to Gordon, who’s one-timer , to his own
disbelief, veered over the bar The Wanderers did a good job killing off
the rest of the pressure and the game finished 1-0. This effectively wraps
up the league for the black and white, barring an epic meltdown. Congrats
Wanderers !

Close
first half ended with a 1-1 score line. JIS took the lead with a nice
finish from Sherif ‘Mido’ Nasar, after a neat Doug Slusher cross. Germans
deservedly tied the game after half hour taking advantage of a bad mistake
in the JIS defense.
Both teams hit the woodwork in the 2nd half, before JIS scored a second
goal. Sherif created the goal for Uli, who was able the slide it home from
close range. Match was decided after JIS got a 3rd, with Gordon beating
the last German defender and chipping the goal keeper.
In the dying minutes JIS even managed to get a 4th goal with Jurrien , in
his first game back after a 6 months, heading in a corner from Lance
Murgatroyd.
