The name of the yellow team

Dear Fussballers...

This is all I gotta say....

The Wanderers have finally been downed by the truly and actual Indomitables Lions in a 2-1 all out attack fest by both sides. In fact, this just might have been one of the most competitive matches ever played in the league. We could have even seen the score of 4 or 5 goals by either or both teams in this back and forth encounter of youngsters versus the elders. The Lions had never beaten the Wanderers in any of their previous derbies or even in a Cup match. There had been some very close encounters over the years but none ever went in favor of the Lions until now. It really was a back and forth match from box to box and end to end. I enjoyed that completely. I don't get to play in that many super close matches against the professionals anymore so I appreciate the chance to see if I still got anything to add to the game.

My favorite part of the night came later though in the locker rooms, after the game, when I noticed that a couple of the ‘Lions’ were dressing on our side. I asked them if they recognized that we are the opposition team and then it suddenly dawned on them both that we weren’t the team that they were actually playing on this evening. So I asked them, ‘What was the name of the club that you just played for in tonight’s match?’. Puzzled looks on their faces, scratching their heads, looking down at the ground.  They quietly said that they didn’t actually know the name of the yellow team but that they quite enjoyed the match anyway if that was okay, sir. I answered, ‘Of course it is…’, then congratulated them both and sent them over to the ‘blondino’ manager on the Indomitable’s side and told them that he is the one who actually gives a couple of hundred thousand rupes per game to the 'helper' players and not us lads (as we are the opposing team). Off they went.

And, the second best part of the evening that I enjoyed the most was the look of sheepish but guilty satisfaction on the faces of Ollie, Scott, Richard, Damien, and John Harrington after the match sitting up top at ISCI having a couple of noisy beers. And Dr. Sakai walking around with that huge smile on his face. He couldn't sit down he was so overjoyed. Fantastic!

Andy Hollingshead's life's work is complete.  He can finally retire happily to America and live out the rest of his days knowing that, even though it cost a pretty penny and was a long road getting there, he finally defeated the formerly almighty Wanderers. A quote came to mind last night when I comtemplated the history of the Lions, 'Never for so long have so many suffered so much to make so few so happy'. They suffered for years and now they are just getting a little satisfaction back off of their tormentors, I realized. Let them gloat and remember last night for the rest of their days. I hope that the memory of it it always brings a smile to all of our faces. I know that I am still chuckling to myself even as I write this passage. Some people reading this are going to be upset with the situation last night. I say, don't be. I mean Arsenal just did it successfully against Real Madrid. The entire lineup for Arsenal was foreign to England. So, for it to be echoed here at our level is quite complimentary. That this single league game met that much just shows us the importance of the league in our lives.

But the words that echoed in my head came from the immortal Mick McTeir, player / manager of DOIT Satu Lagi, when he quipped, ‘Where’s the Lions?’. As soon as they put on the 7th Cameroon national team player, I got myself back on that field ‘cause I knew we were in for some ‘hot potato’ football action and I wanted to partake. To be honest, both of their goals were scored from good strikes by their Indonesian players. So, for the Wanderers to hold the rest of them at bay and actually take more chances on goal then the Cameroonians did just shows how high the standard has progressed even though we continually get older. We all are truly improving with age. Nearly, every player in this league seems to be getting better. There is no doubt about that. For example, Ollie Anderson had the best game of his life. I don't think one single pass went astray from him all night. He fit in seemlessly with the young lads. I am really excited that we still have the Cup possibility to meet this side again. I want to play them on a dry field in good conditions. Should it happen someday then that is going to be a good day of football, I'm sure.

I have said this a million times, I always enjoy playing or even watching a good competitive game of football anytime. Sports-wise, I don’t think there is much better than golf and football. So congratulations, Lions. Even though, I never thought that I would see the day, anyway, it’s all good.  How many times do guys over 35 years old get a chance to play against 20-24 year olds who are all contract hunting? Remarkably, the Lions have already lost three of their squad members to professional contracts already in 2006. That is quite a club that they are building there. You never know… someday the JIFL might be fully professional. And remember, we are the ones who started it. This league has been built on the shoulders of giants.

:: Other results this week: Most matches were called off because ISCI was being rested after the horrific weather conditions recently.  But ol' reliable JIS beat the X-Pats last night 5-0 keeping themselves in contention just in case the Wanderers fail to win another game this season.  Team Japan took out the Magnificent Vikings in a controversial 2-1 contest last Saturday out at Sentul. FC D’s Place, playing at their new Stadium Olah Raga in Blok M, drew 1-1 with BuGils FC in the 1st round of the Cup and then held JIS to a draw last Wednesday 0-0 at the Fortress. The week before that in the derby match BuGils finally beat Knudde 3-2 for the first time in their history at the (soon to be banned by the JIFL Committee) rock garden at Simpruk. It needs to be mentioned that Ol’ Buggily’s has not lost in 3 encounters now. Well done, boys. Keep up the good work.

:: ESCI World Cup ’06 Tournament: The American World Cup Team for the ESCI World Cup 6’s tournament June 3rd is shaping up. It has been pointed out that Ian Duell of German Plus is American plus the Wanderers newest edition and last night’s goal scorer against Cameroon, Todd Showalter, is eligible.  There are two good Vikings players named Chris Felley and Jonathan Striefer also eligible. Plus, D’s has Big Farmer Josh . We should be all right, actually. Is there any American goalkeepers out there?

:: JIFL Golf Tournament: Harmony Thomas of OB Golf & Lifestyle Magazine is organizing the event for an early May or perhaps late April Sunday afternoon. I would suggest that any of you boys entering the tournament start training up. If you need some coaching then contact Lil’ Darren Kelso of Golf Solutions, Ltd..  He can be reached at the following mobile number:  0815 1012 4984. Or contact him via e-mail at darrenkelso@hotmail.com. He is an excellent coach and guarantees to take 10 strokes of your score or he will come and live with you for a month. Guaranteed.

Referee appreciation :
7/10 (Wanderers) 8/10 (Vikings : Decent job in a match that except for one minor incident was played in the spirit all match in JIFL should be played and most actually are-Jesper)

After a short rain shower just before kick off, we were all pleased to play the game as it had already been postponed once due to rain. The first half wasn't anything to write home to your Granny about for the Wanderers as we gave away possession too easily and didn't really get the passing game going on a somewhat heavy and bumpy pitch (maybe ISCI can bring out the roller in 2006!!!???).

The game seesawed back and forth as the Vikings played at a high tempo with a much improved team although they couldn't translate nice play into chances. Jesper made some fine last ditch tackles at the back and Mick Kjaer ontrolled much of the Vikings play.

First goal came from "Magic" Manny with a trademark shot that kinda crept under the keeper - just reward for all his hustling play, excellent movement off the ball and intelligent passing - not surprisingly he was our MOM. The second goal came after a few slick passes with Dale "The Man" Mulholland taking his time and eventually placing a good hard low shot wide of the keeper. Vikings kept pushing hard for a goal & Alex came very close with a great shot just flying inches wide of the post, but a valiant Wanderers defensive display full of grit and passsion - marshaled admirably by Pedro "Crazy Horse" and the impressive Germano kept them at bay. The game was killed off when an unmarked Carl cooly nodded in a corner to make it 3 - 0.

Otherwise on a quiet day there were no riots, demonstrations or even mention of cartoons & Carlsberg beer was still the order of the day.
Mike (Wanderers FC)

Vikings lined up with Staus in goal which has not happened since 1994 but well supported by a well balanced team he did a great job throughout the match although he eventually consider 3 goals which he had no chance of saving. The fist goal was consider in the middle of 2nd half and was the consequence of a tiring Vikings team and the immense pressure that Wanderers had been building from the beginning of second half. Eventually a couple of personal errors gifted Wanderers another 2 goals. It was a deserved victory but Vikings played a very good first half and gave Wanderers a couple of scares. A good well balanced midfield did a great job but we did not have the extra that would have made it possible to create better chances than those that materialized as a result of good forward pressure and a some decent passes.

Sun. Feb. 26th Simprug Bugils FC 3 2 FC Knudde

Scorers : Neil Donovan (Bugils) (1), William Newley (Bugils) (1), Ipal (Bugils) (1)

Referee appreciation :
7/10 (Wanderers) 8/10 (Vikings :
Decent job in a match that except for one minor incident was played in the spirit all match in JIFL should be played and most actually are-Jesper)
Yellow card : William Newley (Bugils)

When I turned up at 15.45, I could see a sea of green shirts and not so many orange ones - a promising sight as Bugils were attempting to break our duck against Knudde (alias a first win in 8 league attempts against our arch rivals). The pitch as well was in pretty decent condition after the mudbath of the previous week against Wanderers.

Why then we started so so poorly was a bit of a mystery. The Knudde forwards (Lambang and Stefan) made good running at our defence and after 10 minutes, Maurice Bloem (ex-Bugils!) took a speculative shot from 25 yards which did Darmono on the bounce. 1-0 Knudde. The arrival of Neil, Bosky and Darshan strengthened the Bugils ranks and with Knudde only having one sub, Bugils started to come into the game. William was giving it everything, and his Cantona-esque(?) knee in from a cross was a deserved goal for him and Bugils. 1-1 at half-time.

Bugils came out stronger in the second, and the Knudde midfield was increasingly detached from their skilful forward line. Unfortunately William's give-it-all attitude earned him a yellow card for a full-blooded and late tackle on the keeper, but the Bugils boys kept working and made the most of a defensive mix up and Neil nipped in to score. 2-1 Bugils.

With an ingenious piece of motivational trickery, Bosky then started shouting that there were 5 minutes to go in the hope that this would spur us to dig deep (there were in fact 15 minutes left), but this backfired as Bugils believed him and were thus determined to throw away our lead. We gave the ball away almost instantly and Knudde equalised. 2-2. For once, however, Bugils believed and Ipal made the most of a wayward Knudde clearance and finished nicely. 3-2 Bugils and we held on for the last 5 minutes to record our first victory in the derby!

The Knudde players were good sports in the bar afterwards and any things done on the pitch, were left there, which is the way it should be.
Mark (Bugils)

Old rivals Bugils managed to beat us for the first time in history. After an early 1-0 lead for Knudde (goalie blooper), we continued pressure on the Bugils goal but were not able to extend the lead. Bugils came slowly back in the match with a fortunate goal presented by our star-player Tony. In the second half Bugils took the initiative as they felt the opportunity to finally beat Knudde. This ended in a 3-2 win (and a big party later in Bugils). Good result for the Bugils boys. The referee was awful, whoever shouted loudest got the free kick. Fortunately this went both ways so did not influence the result of the match.

DOIT robbed by JIS highwaymen
One of the biggest matches of the season unfolded in the plastic pitch of JIS last night in what can only be described as a footballing gem. It is the kind of game we all love to be part of and it took many twists and turns that make football the crazy game we all know. Doit who have returned to good form recently had a strong squad for the game and decided to play a 3-5-2 to control the midfield. Doit started strongly and dominated the first 15 minutes or so, only to lose their way a bit when the full JIS squad eventually took to the field. JIS were in the game for about 10 minutes and tried to feed Gordon Boyd as the lone attacker.

Their pressure paid of with a goal from a corner. As always JIS are dangerous at a corner and the cross found a unmarked man about 10 yards out who rose and headed the ball over the towering Sid Whyte on the goal line. One nil down against the run of play, but Doit did not let it unsettle them. Late in the Half Gareth Withe frustrated Lee in the middle of the park who then lashed out and was given a yellow card. 1-0 to JIS at half time but Doit had played some of their best football of the season to date!

A few fresh faces on at the start of the second half were required due to the fast pace of the game and Doit picked up where they left off. Dominating the midfield but yet failing to create clear chances. It took a moment of brilliance to even the score with Ronan O'Neill scoring one of his party trick goals which have punished JIS over the last two seasons. He collected the ball just inside the JIS half beat one player and took an extra touch and rifled a shot home from all of 35 yards. A deserved equaliser and one which lifted Doit's tails and led to considerable pressure for the rest of the game.

After serving his suspension Lee returned to the field and was almost instantly involved in a challenge with Rudy which left the ref little or no choice but to issue a second yellow card and red to dismiss him from the field. Doit made use of the extra man and it looked like JIS were just trying to ride out the storm to the final whistle.

In the last 15 minutes Doit must have had nearly 7 or 8 corners but failed to make anything from them. Then the killer punch with a minute to go and several Doit players changing out due to tiredness. JIS made a break down the right and whipped a ball into the Doit box, Gordon flicked it on and then another player got a touch to loop the ball over the outcoming keeper, 2-1 to JIS. The restart was not long enough for Doit to attack and JIS had clinched a victory at the death. Although most of the Doit players were gutted, it was remarked that last season we had stolen a result against JIS and now things were even. A great game but frustrating result.

However Doit were not put off retiring to the Satu Lagi bar for a few refreshments after the game, several B52's were downed and some jugs of decidedly dodgy ale. Early retiree's were Mr Neil Copper and the young delectable Kim Brumby who shared a car home together. Allegedly their plutonic friendship extends to this kind of activity! The manager was also given lots of advice on how to run the team during the session and is planning some changes as a result. Next game is Friday 10th at ISCI vs Knudde, KO 8PM. Rumour has it that the new kit will be available for then!!!!
Mick (Doit)

JIS-DoIt clashes are always fiercely contested. Over the past 10 years of battle, I would be surprised if one team had the overall upper hand. Indeed, they often assume tragic proportions, with the team seemingly most likely to win, ultimately snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

DoIt arrived early and assumed control from the opening whistle. They were to dominate possession for the remainder of the game, packing the midfield to stop up the access and passageway of JIS’ playmakers. This lead to a number of half-chances for the boys in Yellow, though there was a decided lack of composure in front of goal, and most of their shots were taken from distance. As so often happens then, it was JIS who took the lead. Murgatroyd’s excellent corner found a completely unmarked McCarthy 12 meters out and his precise header flew above the vertically-challenged Sid at the near post. 1-0 JIS. It was to stay that way until half-time, though JIS midfielder Lee Hawkins was yellow carded for a late tackle from behind on Do It’s man of the match , Fandi.

The second half saw more Do-It pressure, and within 10 minutes, they got results. Ronan, took a pass 35 meters out, with his back to the goal, turned and fired a screaming, dipping laser beam into the top near post corner, completely befuddling JIS keeper Andreas. 1-1, and no one could say Do It didn’t deserve it. The remainder of the game continued to see Do-It enjoy possession, though few chances, other then when Andreas fumbled the ball, which was on at least 6 occasions.. When Lee Hawkins was booked a second time for a poorly timed challenge, JIS were down to 10 men. It seemed as if Do-It would camp out in the JIS half for the remaining 20 minutes, but their build up was always slow, and with JIS hunkering down for a fight, there were few chances at all. Ironically, the best and maybe only real chance of the match fell to JIS with a man down. Gordon Boyd was put through and with only the Do-It Goalie to beat , you would have put your money on him to put that away. However, his shot went wide and both teams seemed to have settled for a draw.

Finally, with barely a minute to play, the tragic bell was struck. A long Matt Merritt throw-in from the right side was flicked on by JIS striker Gordon Boyd, and before the Do It keeper could gather, JIS’ Stephane Thos had struck from behind, hooking the ball over the keeper and into the net. Incredibly, JIS were ahead, and all that was left was the final whistle.

While Do It certainly will feel hard done by, JIS knows this feeling all to well from past encounters with them. The game might best be explained by one of Macbeth:

“[it is] a tale told by an idiot, full of sound a fury, signifying nothing”

Sat. March. 4th Sentul Team Japan 2 2 Bugils FC

Scorers : Sugimoto (Japan) (1), Ando (Japan) (1), Neil Donovan (Bugils) (1), Bosky (Bugils) (1)
MOM:
Kawanami (Japan), Neil Donovan (Bugils)

Referee appreciation :
4/10 (Japan). 7/10 (Bugils :
great job done by a local lad who filled in for the absent referees-Mark)
Because an official referee didn't come, the member of Indonesian team of Sentul supports  to holding the match. Japan team gained the ascendancy over Bugils in the first half. But Bugils gained the ascendancy over Japan team in the 2nd half. We had no choice other than to accept sometimes mistaken judgment. The issue of Japan team in this year can't win in the close game.
Kagami
(Japan)

The Bugils renaissance continued as we managed our first draw against the Japanese, and that’s now 4 points in 2 games. Japan started more brightly and took the lead. Bugils got into their stride and the Donovan pairing up front (Gerald and Neil) combined well with a neat back heel from Gerald to Neil, who finished very coolly. Bugils then rather unluckily failed to clear a corner and Sugimoto nipped in, as he is prone to do, to put the Japanese back in front.

At half-time, Bugils were full of confidence we could get back into the game, and pushed the Japanese hard in the second half. Bosky got our second goal and Bugils could have wrapped it up when Gerald hit the underside of the crossbar and the ball bounced out (Dale: why don’t you employ some Russian linesmen?)… The Japanese were not their usual passing self in the second half, harried by the Bugils lads eager for a second win in two weeks, but it wasn’t to be.
Roll on the rest of the season….

Referee appreciation :
8/10 (JIS), (6/10) (D's Place)
Yellow card :
Maurizio (D's Place), Stéphane Thos (JIS)

D's came to JIS with the clear target to take all 3 points home, they could even afford to leave Andrei Osokin on the bench for the complete game. Anyway, in the first half 60% possession for D's but more danger from the JIS team, but no goals. The game also in the second half didn't slow down and became a bit physical which resulted in a pushing brawl and 2 yellow cards. We all assumed there might be a lucky shot just before the end, and it almost came true, Gordon almost scored for JIS and D's was also close for a final goal. Special note for our youngest player Will Julius who played the complete game for JIS and was selected from D's as our MOM, I believe he is the youngest player ever to make it. Special note: JIS provided drinks to Geoff and the russian department from D's, please keep in mind for the fair play trophy.
Uwe (JIS)

Thanks to JIS for their kind hospitality and charity by providing drinks to D's. D's Place vote JIS for the fair play trophy.

Sat. March 11th Sentul Team Japan  1  1  Vikings FC

Scorers : Chris (Vikings) (1), Okada (Japan) (1)
MOM:
Chris (Vikings),
Referee appreciation :
2/10 (Vikings :
In a match with very little drama except for two incidents that result in 3 yellow cards that easily and probably all should have been red and the 2 of 10 because one of his wrong decisions was critical to the result-Jesper), 8/10 (Japan)
Yellow card : Miura (Japan), Chris (Vikings)

Yet another disappointing result as Japan scored on the only chance the had and Vikings again being punished for being incredibly inefficient in front of goal although that we actual scored once this time.

Only two incidents are really worth mentioning. 1/ In 1st half a long ball into the Viking box results in a fair tackle between the Vikings goalie and the Japanese forward. While still on the ground the Japanese forward punches the Viking goalie who was not going to take it lying down but instead got up and kick the Japanese forward in the behind. The referee decided to handle this the "English" way and awarded each of the two culprits a yellow card, however, no one would have protested had the referee decided to make both cards red. 2/ at 1-1 in second half the Vikings center forward breaks through, dribbles the Japanese goalie outside the box. The goalie who is last man grabs the forward's shirt trying to pull the forward back. The Vikings striker - although under pressure - succeeded in getting a shot off but the referee at the same time decides to award a free kick just outside the box before the ball rests in the back of the net. Taking the advantage away is one thing but that referee decides against giving the Japanese goalie a red card, and no, not even a yellow card disregarding he was last man and a free kick was awarded against him for pulling the shirt of forward in front of an open goal, makes no sense. The referee should be told to follow the rules or find somewhere else to spend his Saturday afternoons. Trust Dale will take care of that.

Sat. March 11th ISCI Lions FC  2  1 German Plus

Scorers : Billy (Lions) (1), Arsen (Lions) (1)
MOM:
Billy (Lions), Marius Guenl (German plus)

Referee appreciation :
3/10 (
Lions :they don't get any better-Andy), 8/10 (German Plus)

The first half of play began with both teams sharing possession and each mounting a few mediocre attempts at goal. Eventually, German + took advantage of a miscue in the Lions defense and scored first. German + took this lead to the half. The Lions were rejuvenated in the second half with some fresh players and began to dominate play. German + made a strong defensive stance and held off several well constructed attacks by the Lions. A serious error in judgement by the German + last man to leave the ball for the keeper rather than make a simple heading clear allowed the Lions quick footed striker to equalize.

The Lions continued to pressure the Germans defense while the Germans in turn organized a few counter attacks towards the Lions end. With about 15 minutes left the German defense broke down again when they marked poorly on a Lions corner kick. After an initial brilliant save by the German keeper, the reflected ball was easily headed into the back of the net by an unmarked player.
Overall a fair game with no unpleasant incidents to report. A deserved win by the Lions.

The Lions having suffered the ignominy of being battered by the marauding Wanderers for many years – finally exacted revenge and erased the emotional scars of once being our B team and affectionately known as “The Muppets”. A new era in Lions history nonetheless – the Muppet Show days are long gone but still good to see a few old Lions roaring. Also pleased to make Andy’s dream come true of seeing the Lions maul the Wanderers in their own den.

Yes, the day finally had to Arrive, it was only a question of when. Little did the Wanderers FC even dream that they would play unbeaten for over 4 years in the JIFL at ISCI and in fact almost 4 years in any competitive game – a run stretching back to losing the Cup Final to JIS in May 2002 on penalties and a league loss in Jan or Feb 2002 to Italy or DIU – probably over 50 league games & 70 games in total. Of course it had to be the indomitable Lions that made history with their 2-1 win last night.

The game – fast and furious. Wanderers even sliced Lions open like a salmon and gorged themselves on chances (all 8 or 10 squandered) – making the Lions' keepers very busy all night. Lions took the lead on 25 mins with a long range shot as Wanderers players were heard commenting: “I’m not marking that little, tricky fast as fuck Lion,...you are!" Lions made it 2-0 in the second half with another similar long range shot. Apart from the 2 goals the Lions created nowt as Pedro marshaled the defence well & Husen didn’t have to make a save of note.

By now the crowd had gone quiet. The bets were still going on ..could the Wanderers do another Houdini…. TOMMY scored!!! Carl came on… Was this the last throw of the Dice? ….More bets went down…. Could they do it - The Final Whistle Blew

The race to win the league is still on though & I guess we’ll have to beat JIS now!!!!!
