Any questions about anything anywhere in the world

Dear Footnatics,

Well... well... well.... (I just like to say and write that). Well, well, well.
We are just finishing up our
second week into the 2nd half of the season
and surprisingly the total footballers of Knudde have lost headway somewhat with a draw against the Mighty Lions and a loss to last season's league champions JIS. The race tightens back up with JIS praying for another slip-up from the current league leaders although I have heard talk in the Wanderers camp that last week's loss against the inspired X-Pats was the best thing that could have happened to them in recent times. Personally, I think that it was good for the standard of the league. Keeping the race tight brings out the best in teams. It makes for a better and more competitive match on any given day for every club in the league. For instance, the other evening Team Japan came out to ISCI to try to put another chink in the leader's armour. It was a good match. Team Japan almost pulled it off by leading 1-0 at halftime and then again 2-1 with less than 15 minutes to go before a Manny specialty Dunga-style free kick ended up tying the ballgame even squares. Finally, in added time, a 40 yard 'Hail Mary' freekick got launched into the TJ penalty box and (although, according to the ESPN Football Focus analysts, it was surely going in the back of the net, regardless) took a merest nick off of a TJ defender's knoggen and surprisingly scored much to the joy of the Wanderers lads and a complete shock to the Japanese fellows.

Earlier that same day, the Boys of DOIT performed at Stadium BIS against the tough battling FC D's Place and had to settle for a 1-1 draw. This is the same FC D's Place who had an inspiring performance of their own last Monday hacking the X-Pats to pieces in a 6-1 demolition derby at ISCI. Another demolition smash-up happened at Simpruk for Mark Temple and the BuGil's Boys when Deutschland came to town. German Plus completely dominated the goalscoring side of the match taking a mere seven off of Ray 'Gu Goggs' and the B-Boys in a 7-0 romp on Goggs' home turf of all places (and this is even after I told them to never put Ray in between the sticks but they, obviously, didn't listen).

Meanwhile, Wednesday night, JIS, who have been trying to show again that they are still serious contenders to the Wanderers reclamation of the thrown, expected to thrash the nearly Magnificient Vikings with a home-court advantage at Fortress JIS. Former JIFL All-Star (ESE captain) and child football prodigy, Max Johnson (who incidentally has left the Wanderers and joined the Mag. Vikings) assisted the Mags in shutting down the pretenders to the thrown in a goaless 0-0 thriller. In regards to Max joining the Mags, I just hope that it is not to his eternal regret with all of the problems that Denmark has been having as of late. Equally as important, I also hope that Jesper doesn't get all scared and run off rabbit-like back west to the homeland and join the Homeland Security Force (or the HSF as they fondly refer to it in the suburbs of Copenhagen).

Note To Jesper: Jesper don't get frightened. Stay calm. We are all your friends and we will protect you.  You are safe here. You are among those that care about you. Stay with us. No harm will come to you.

And, sadly, speaking of people leaving our adopted homeland, the JIFL wishes to extend another farewell to one of the league's most prolific goalscorers of all time. Rainer Brunings of Knudde fame has moved to Beijing. He used to win the goalscoring crown every season with an average of 35 goals per season normally. I think that he must have been the most feared striker in the JIFL history. The Rovers one time suffered 10 goals against them in one match where all of them were scored by Big Man Brunings.  Incidentally, Rainer sent us a little note last week from Chinaland which can be read below.

"Wanderers congratulations with your win over Knudde...wish I could have been there.
Like Robin, I also moved to another country (China Beijing)

Goodbye to you all and have fun at the pitches or with the pitchers...whatever...better both!
And thanks for everything I had a great time playing soccer in Jakarta.
Cheers,
Rainer Brunings''

We will all miss you Rainer and we wish you the best of everything for the rest of your days. Farewell, old friend.

Anyway, no controversy this week outside of disparaging caricatures of The Prophet so I will tell you what is happening in the junior football league in and around Jakarta. Coca-Cola has decided to put their sponsorship behind a new children's football league called the JSFL which is similar to the JYSL (JIS league) that takes place in the fall only the Coca-Cola league runs from the late winter into springtime.  And the most obvious difference is that the 'Coke League' is seriously competitive unlike the JIS league which is based on the AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization) where the philosophy is that 'everybody plays'. Now, don't get me wrong. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that philosophy. In fact, it is a good introduction to football. But for those who want more and seemingly can't get enough then here you go. This new league is full of really good teams and good players with one of the most interesting being the combination team from Euro Soccer Excellence and ISCI. Both organizations have decided to combine their resources to create a new and unified entity called ESCI and which plays as attractive football as any that Liverpool or United could put out on any day of the week. And this is not a league which is created exclusively for boys either. In fact, one of the top ESCI U-11 players is a future US women's national team squad member named Lily Ober. She is fast, skillful and feisty and looks and plays a bit like the Welsh international Robbie Savage (but only resembles him from a distance). We have decided to nickname her 'Robbie' as she is one of the few females playing in a predominantly male league but nobody thinks differently once she takes the field. I invite anybody and everybody out any day to see the Coca-Cola youth football league. It is really great entertainment and I, along with Marvin, am honoured to be coaching in it.

I even started to drink Coke again and support Coke products. I mean, 'Why not?'. It tastes good and they are indeed supporting youth football. Thanks, Coke. Is Dr. Pepper one of your products? Or is that the other guys? 'Cause anybody who knows me well then also knows that I luuuuvvvvv Dr. Pepper.  Hmmmmm.... hmmmm, good! Dr. Pepper!  Now that's a man's drink! Anyway..... feel free to contact the webmaster if you have any questions about anything anywhere in the world. I will answer them. And, finally, as Nico always says.... 'See you live on the pitches'.

An inspired performance by D's to finally break the goal scoring conundrum we experienced in the first half of the season. Our captain, Nick, made some positional changes that benefited our squad tremendously. We knew the X-Pats were going to be tough after a monumental victory last week, so we certainly weren't going to take them lightly. With two goals by Nico and a howitzer of a shot by Alex, we found ourselves up 3-0 at half-time. We continued our inspired play by scoring five minutes into the second-half to ultimately defeat their sails. Our strikers were dangerous all match and really controlled the flow of the game. They scored one after our keeper slipped and almost scored another when Andrey the Great, from D's, banged one off of our post from just inside the box. Thankfully it went for a corner. After that we calmed down and smacked in two more. A clean well spirited game on both sides, for the most part. The referees made some dubious calls but overall did a good job, although maybe the leaque should check their eyesight and invest into buying spectacles. Just a thought. Geoff (D's Place)

JIS took on the total footballers of Knudde on Wednesday night. With the Wanderers falling to the Expats, both teams looked to this game to call themselves out as the true challengers to the throne. JIS fielded a full strength side, but it was the men in orange who controlled the first 25 minutes, keeping possession in midfield, while probing wide and down the middle for an opening. While their shots were from distance, they did force JIS keeper Piotr Jakubowski into a full stretch save at one point. Then, on a rare JIS counter-attack, the game turned. Doug Slusher ran onto a nice through ball, faked the shot, pulled it back to Uli-the-impending-husband, who pushed it across to Lee Hawkins who hammered a one-timer past the Knudde keeper from 20 meters out. 1-0 JIS.

At this point, the game completely turned in JIS’ favor. Knudde seemed to hang their heads, and JIS poured forward, looking for a second. It remained 1-0 at the break, but it seemed that the heavier cheese-eaters of the Dutch midfield were beginning to run out of puff. 15 minutes in to the second half, after total JIS domination and a string of chances, JIS had its second goal. Matt Merritt sent a long cross into the box from 50 meters out, and Doug Slusher met the bounce at its highest point, out-jumping the Dutch keeper, heading the ball into the top corner. 10 minute later, Butch Koltai found himself all alone on the right side, but unselfishly gave it to Thomas Weber, who coolly slotted home from an acute angle. The 3-0 final score could have been much worse, if not for some poor JIS finishing. JIS takes second place and now waits for another Wanderers’ slip-up. C.M (JIS)

Confirm result and agree with match analysis. Knudde lost 2 vital players at half time due to injury (Hidde and Tony), and the whole structure collapsed. It shows how are good results from the last months is dependent on all good players being around and fit. Wouter (Knudde)

GOOD, FRIENDLY OPEN GAME.  LIONS PROBABLY CREATING MORE CHANCES OVERALL AND SCORED 2 GOALS IN THE FIRST HALF. VIKINGS BATTLED WELL IN THE SECOND HALF AND HAD A GOOD 15MIN SPELL OF PRESSURE BUT COULDNT PIERCE THE LIONS DEFENCE. AFTER JIS WIN OVER KNUDDE, LIONS MAINTAIN THEIR PUSH AND ARE STILL JUST 3 POINTS BEHIND JIS.  STILL CHASING THE SECOND SPOT.  THE JIS V LIONS RETURN GAME MAY WELL DECIDE RUNNER UP SPOT.. Andy (Lions)

An excellent result for D's, since it was our first point from DOIT in our four year football history. We played the game without three of our regular top players, so it was a point well-deserved. We played well in the first half and took the lead after a great shot by our striker, Joel and some key goalkeeping. Half-time score 1-0 D's. The second-half saw our side struggle to maintain our advantage. They had our defense under pressure and backing-up for most of the half. They finally scored on an intended cross
that barely crossed the line in mid-air to even the score. We managed to keep our composure for the remainder of the game and denied any other threatening opportunities. A good game on both sides, for the most part. Geoff (D's Place)

Withe See's Red with minutes to go!

After DOIT's return to form against German Plus it was confident team who assembled at BIS on Sat afternoon. When we gathered the last game from the Jakarta Schools soccer league was just finishing and all eagerly awaited the arrival of the new kit. Eric obligingly arrived with the kit which resembled the old kit but smelt fresh as though it had been newly laundered. A large squad was available and new signing Andy Ward looked to impress in the warm up. With captain Whyte missing it fell to trust Nick Czolak to Marshall (that is a type of frozen chicken isn't it? One more poultry & stuffing joke get slipped in!) the defence. Also Whibley was available for the first time in a long while. The line up looked good on paper with a nice blend of youth and experience and fitness and lack off it! Captain Clarke took over the role with Whyte missing and won the toss, he always was a good tosser said Departing teacher Mr Cooper!

However Doit started poorly and were nearly caught out after a few minutes when our defence were still taking up position and a D's player sneaked though for Barneveld to save the day. D's foreign contingent created several chances to little rebuff from Doit and looked the better team in the early stages. Doit last line of defence (the offside trap) was relied upon as several players seemed off colour and a little lackadaisical! Keeper Barneveld saved the day several times with one notable close range block (that must have hurt).

Young Andy get his taste of a senior game and did well if a little nervous to start. Old Eric at right back taught him as few old tricks, scything down the 15 year old no 14 from behind resulting in him being carried off and no card from the ref. The omens were bad with respect to the ref's decision making. The game evened up a bit but D's looked fast on the break and eventually the offside trap was sprung. The nippy Indonesian forward broke through and finished well beating the outstretched Barneveld easily. 1-0 to D's. Enough was enough and manager McTeir brought himself on. His highlight for the day was a well struck free kick from the edge of the box (result of another foul on Gareth) but it was straight at the keeper who held it well. A flurry of chances came near the end of the first half and their keeper did very well to prevent Doit from scoring.

Some tough talking at half time from all but the manager.  Some players were told to buck up their ideas and pull their fingers out. First sign of Witheys temper at this point. Ronan looked a shadow of his former self, must have been the quit night in he had on Friday! Several changes to the line up were made to get everyone on the pitch and at the start of the second half Doit looked a bit more consolidated. Lots of runs and attacks but D's managed to deflect these out to the flanks denying any clear breaks through the middle. Rudy and Fandi worked tirelessly but still the D's back four frustrated us. The Cisse look alike in the middle also got too much room and created a lot of plays for D's. Doit had a cross/shot claim of over the line by the bench which was denied , but a replica situation 5 minutes later resulted in a goal award from the ref. Gomez broke down the right and tried to centre the ball only for it to catch the keeper unawares at the near post, again he got a hand to it but the ref adjudged it had crossed the line (and who are we to argue!!).

This picked up Doit's spirits and they dominated the remainder of the game.  With minutes to go the game took a different turn.  In what had been a good natured fixture it suddenly turned a bit nasty. A frustrated one time to many D's player lashed out at Gareth and with the ref reaching for his cards , the red mist descended on With. I have some sympathy as he had been taking a kicking the whole game, but he just couldn't stop himself throwing the ball directly at the guys head, which resulted in a red card for both. Wit both teams down to 10 men they played out the last few minutes with Doit pressurising the D's goalmouth. Final whistle and a very fair draw. Doit looked like they might nick it near the end but that would have been an injustice. Fandi awarded man of the match after the manager talked D's out of giving it to Ronan. Mick (Doit)

Please correct goal scorers. Final gaol was Japan own goal (Mr. Soda). Yet again, we couldn't win to Wanderers. Kagami (Japan)

On a dry (weather wise of course!!!) Saturday nite at ISCI the Wanderers just managed to beat Japan in an absolutely thrilling encounter -- a game of freekicks.

It was Japan who looked the better team in the first half - luckily Sugi didn't have his finishing boots on as he had a few chances to score but Japan took a deserved first half 1-0 lead with a goal on 30mins resulting from slack Wanderers marking. Wanderers did score an equaliser in the first half as the goalkeeper saved but palmed the ball over the line but controversy ensued as the linesman & referee didn't give the goal even though a half blind man in Bali could have seen the ball crossed the line.

It was a game of two halves as Wanderers came out in the second half with a battle on their hands. Manny cooly stroked in a freekick into the top righthand corner from 30 metres out to make it 1-1 about 15mins into the second half. Japan bounced back with a goal 10mins later after some poor goalkeeping and more slack marking. However, Wanderers were really controlling the game this second half and Manny blasted in another great freekick 5 mins later. Both teams were looking for a winner & Japan almost got it as they hit the crossbar. However, in the last minute of the game Dale launched a monstrous freekick from way inside the Wanderers half and the ball sailed high and looped into the back of the net with possibly the slightest deflection off a Japan player to make it 3-2 amid wild celebrations from Wanderers players. And we now wait for JIS to slip up. Mike (Wanderers FC)

A very friendly game against Bugils. Comfortable temperature and a little bid of rain did suit both teams after a usual long Saturday night. Bugils playing very offensive, which did create several chances of counterattacks for German Plus. The result 2 goals for German Plus in the first half . Bugils very unlucky in the first half and should have scored at least 2 goals. Second half basically a copy of the first half, Bugils did create even more chances but German Plus scored another 5 goals. Dieter (G+)

We agree with all of Dieter's comments - especially about how we should have got loads of goals ;) Unfortunately, our finishing was poor and the Germans were particularly incisive. As Lens said in the bar afterwards from the 20 min of the 1st half (at 2-0) until the 20th minute of the second half (3-0) we dominated the game. But we haven't yet managed to find a team or referee who is willing to count only the middle 40 minutes of a game ! The German's MOTM was Elario, who is a quality addition to their midfield and helped the Germans to make the most of their counter attacks. Mark (Bugils)

Wed. Feb. 8th JIS JIS  0 0 Vikings FC

MOM: Gordon Boyd (JIS), Linus (Vikings)
Referee appreciation :
7/10 (JIS)

With only 11 players available JIS took on an improved Vikings side. Vikings showing great character already before the game started by coming out of their shelters and showing up………..Bravo!

On the pitch it was a close affair with few chances on both ends and JIS the team with most of the possession and Gordon Boyd coming close to score on a couple of occasions in the first half.

The best chance of the match fell to JIS in the 2nd half, when Butch Koltai pulled the ball back from the back line to Uli who only needed a tap in to score. He completely missed, but did manage to get the ball to Doug Slusher who was in an even better position. Unfortunately for JIS he fired over the cross bar, which from that distance (2 meters out), was probably a lot more difficult than scoring……..Vikings escaped!

In the last minute of the game Vikings almost won it, when a JIS defender crossed the ball into his own penalty box to one of the Vikings forwards. Only a sublime save from Piotr ( Jakubowski Jr) prevented the Vikings from taking all 3 points. Jurrien (JIS)
