JIFL News N°12.vol 2. Season 2005-2006
------------------------------------------ : : EditoDon't stop playing until the whistle blows
Dear Calciatori,
Welcome back to the 2nd half of the 2005-06 JIFL season. Already, the league is celebrating the first chink in the league leader’s armor. Here, let me put the byline down first...
Jakarta X-Pats Claim Historic Victory Over the Wanderers The Jakarta X-Pats played outstanding football on Wednesday night to hand the two time JIFL champion's, the Wanderers, their first defeat of the season. Incidentally, it is only the 3rd league defeat in the last 4 years for the Wanderers and the X-Pats deserved it completely. Again, ‘Man of the Match’ Jean Pierre Sveke led his team to victory and proved once again that he is one of the best footballers in this league. Not only did he completely control the midfield but he struck a goal that no goalkeeper in the world could stop after banging it twenty yards out straight inside the post to send it off the opposite post before it ricocheted back into the net. There simply was no stopping it. I quite enjoyed the style of football that the X-Pats were playing. The Kuningan pitch was a bit long and soft which neutralized any speed advantage that the Wanderers forwards might have held otherwise over the X-Pat defenders. Nonetheless, congratulations X-Pats. It is time that you lads turned this thing around and started exerting yourselves on the standard of the league. You boys played top level football and were rewarded with a much deserved win. If the X-Pats continue with that current team that they had the other night then I rather predict that very few teams can pull off a victory playing at their home stadium. Quite frankly, I was proud of them. What good football that was to watch!
Don’t Cry for Me, Nederlandia Knudde are another team who are currently playing some fine football with Joris van Hees and Edward Vreiken leading a fine group of athletes to 2nd place in the league. Unfortunately, they were unable to pull a victory over the league leaders last Friday night and some may or may not think that it was due to a controversial goal that was scored which can be read about in the game reports below. The only thing that I can comment about in regards to that fine long range goal is that all players should remember the first rule that we learn as children. First Rule of Football: Don’t stop playing until the whistle blows. Period. And… no further comment.
DOIT Does Deutschland The Boys of DOIT took a hammer to Germany Plus’s recent upswing in form and damaged it heavily at the German’s home stadium GIS in BSD Serpong last Saturday in their 2nd half opening match. The score ended 4-0 and looks like DOIT are back in the surge for a run at a UEFA Cup spot. I always say that no team can ever take the Boys of DOIT lightly. They can beat anybody at anytime. On the other hand….
Goodbye Orange Brick Road As usual, I am here to serve as the initial bearer of bad news. Again, the JIFL is losing one of its all-time finest players. JIFL All-Star and captain of Knudde, Robin Lavoij, has played his last match for the total footballers of Holland and has transferred to Malawi after passing up an offer from his beloved Feyenoord back home. We will all miss Robin and will look forward to perhaps seeing him playing for Holland this summer in the World Cup ’06. Good luck, buddy. Keep in touch.
My Name is Gu-Gogg I saw captain Ray ‘Googley-Gogglies’Atree of BuGils FC over the break and he let me know in no uncertain terms that he really enjoys the newsletter every week but has a single complaint. He mentioned that he is not mentioned often enough in the weekly diatribes. Therefore, we have decided to rename him Ray Gu-Goggs and from now on that is what he will be referred to in any future briefings. So please update your phone directories with the correct name change and simply refer to him at anytime in public as ‘Gu-Gogg’. He loves it!
Ibrahim Signs Professional Contract And yet another of the JIFL’s finest has graduated to contract level and has joined the professional ranks. Ibrahim Inoussa of the Mighty Lions fame has signed with Gorontalo in Sulewesi in the Indonesian 1st Division. We wish Ibrahim the best of everything in his pursuit into full time football. Glad that the JIFL could be of help.
And, believe it or not, I got nothin’ left to say this
week…. --------------------------------------

Scorers : Darshan (1) (Bugils),
Elwin de Groot (1) (Knudde), Joris van Hees (1) (Knudde),
Stefan van den Hende (1) (Knudde) The conditions were wet underfoot as both teams lined up
for our derby match. Unfortunately, Bugils were missing Hartoyo (at centre
back) and Darmono (goalkeeper) due to the rain, but Jacob very sportingly
agreed to play in goal for us (and played very well in slippery conditions
without gloves!). Knudde got off to a quick start and made the most of a
defensive lapse at the back to score. The Knudde boys were quick through
midfield and Joris (ex-Bugils!) ended up a good run with a finish which
Jacob was unluckily unable to prevent going in. It was however not one way
traffic and Bugils continued to press with excellent work, especially
between Fariz, Match in good spirit between the 2
rivals Bugils and Knudde. The first half was clearly dominated by
Knudde, while the second half saw Bugils taking control over the match
resulting in some anxious minutes until Knudde decided the match 10
minutes before the final whistle. The match was marked by the farewell
of Robin Lavooij, who played in almost all Knudde matches in the last
4,5 years. ----------------
Scorers : Ivan Chevallier (1) (X-Pats),
Sugimoto (1) (Japan), Kawanami (1) (Japan), Miura (1) (Japan)
The replay of the washed out game from December looked doomed for
postponement with the Sentul pitches awash again on Saturday afternoon.
Fortunately, someone managed to find and pull a "plug" in the centre
circle and the water began to drain away. This did mean, however, that the
players were joined during the game by two "warning" cones on the pitch.
Some spectators were heard to have commented that these "sometimes
appeared to offer more attacking threat than the Expat forward line". When
the game eventually kicked off, however, more than 50% of the pitch was
still flooded. Dribbling the ball was impossible and the only sensible
option available was to hoof the ball into the opponents half and hope for
a lucky splash. I personally enjoyed the opportunity to resurrect some of
my long neglected sliding tackles which in Saturday's conditions would be
best described as a surf tackle.

Scorers : Dale (1) (Wanderers), Keith (1) (Wanderers),
Edward Vreeken (1) (Knudde) The first league game of 2006 for the Wanderers saw them look a bit rusty after all the revelry on offer over the festive season but doing enough to get all 3 points. The game started with a few regulars suffering from jam karet so Carl started in nets, and made a few great saves before reverting to his more customary role in the centre of defence!!!! The Wanderers line then up was Carl, Chris, Dave B, Pedro, Mike, Keith, Dave H, Manny, Tony, Dale, Tommy with Tom & Merrio and Husen (late) and Jules (v.late). The game was played at a fast and furious pace with both teams creating chances. The Wanderers first goal came late in the second half after a few ricochets and a game of pinball resulting in the in-form midfielder, Keith (Vincent) Maynard, notching up his 3rd league goal in 5 games. Knudde kept pressing for an equalizer but a rather brilliant albeit possibly controversial (according to a few Knudde players) goal stole their thunder. Dale managed to keep the ball in play on the left-hand-side and seeing the keeper way off his line launched a lob from about way way out that sailed high and dropped in the back of the net. It looked a superb goal to most but a few Knudde players were deeply upset that the referee gave the goal as they said they stopped playing because one of the Wanderers players was down on the ground although the referee didn’t stop play or blow his whistle and Dale was unaware of anything except trying to keep the ball in play and scoring a great goal. The second half saw both plays continuing to push
forward and Knudde were rewarded for their industry with an absolutely
spectacular strike from one of their young players. However, this only
seemed to galvanize the Wanderers who finished off the match, in which
they created the lion's share of chances, with a well-taken Manny freekick
that the keeper parried into the path of Dale who smashed it in from an
acute angle – game, set & match to the Wanderers, who are another game
nearer to reclaiming the league title. On the evidence of play, it was
easy to see why Knudde are 2nd in the league as they have a lot
of new fast and skillful players who will give the other teams a tough
ride. Knudde's winning run was stopped, not surprisingly, by Wanderers. It is not a shame to lose to the Wanderers as they are definitely the strongest team in our league. However, the second goal incident as described by Mike was experienced (as always) must different by the Knudde squad. I must admit that I was not around during this incident (I only arrived at half time) so I cannot give you my personal view, but all Knudde players were convinced that Dale had seen that his team-mate was injured because Dale received the ball from the position on the pitch where this player went down. Apparently, all Knudde players and majority of the Wanderers players immediately stopped playing (of course), except for Dale and his colleage that passed the ball to him. But this is not about Dale, this is about the mentality of the Wanderers as a team. Apparently, they do anything to win a match as long as it is within the rules of the referee (who forgot to whistle). Even with Dale shooting the ball in the goal they should have corrected the situation as a team, but they didn't. This is very dis-appointing. That Dale was uncommonly quiet after his controversial goal (he substituted himself apparently immediately), and also after the match, may have been a sign that even Dale was embarrassed about what he had done. I do have to report that the referee at
the end of the match threatened our young player Edward - after he
received a yellow - to beat him up after the match. Although I do not know
what Edward told the ref that caused this response (it must not have been
very friendly), I would request Dale to investigate this incident.

Scorers : Denis Clarke (3) (Doit), Neil Cooper (1) (Doit) Clarke makes a comfortable start to the season Doit were slightly stunned as it had been a while since they had taken the lead so early in a game! Doit continued to play a commanding game but German plus did create a few chances which they should have scored from but Keeper Barneveld formed a formidable barrier to the attacks. Doits second came from a quick incisive attack and was a pleasure to watch unfold. Czolak knocked the ball wide to With, who strangely found himself out by the touchline (I told you it was narrow), he beat his man leaving him for dead and crossed a pinpoint ball to the far post whereby lurked the shortest attacker in the team who nodded it home for his second goal of the game. A few minutes after this goal the frustration boiled over when one of the German plus midfielders who had lost the ball one time too many, retaliated at DOIT new signing Ricardo. The player (Venezuelan) then
insulted Ricardo in Spanish (obviously not knowing he was Colombian) which
initiated a response, not really a head butt in the Glasgow kiss sense,
but, maybe the Latin equivalent! Both players got a yellow card, only
opening up the opportunity for player manager McTeir to take to the field.
His first touch led to DOIT's third goal of the half when he broke down
the right (where else) and crossed low (~5 ft) and hard to the far post.
With the keeper rooted to the spot the wiley old attacker Clarke sneaked
in and hit the mark with another header. A hat trick in approx 30
minutes!! He immediately substituted himself to give Cooper a run and Doit
held on until half time, although they were tiring. New attacker Cooper missed what
could only be described as a sitter and DOIT piled on the pressure with a
series of successive corners and attacks. It finally paid of when Fandi
broke down the left beating two players on the way, cut into the box and
took it to the by-line where he squared it back past the keeper to Neil
Cooper who could not miss from three yards out. 4-0 the final result and a
fair one at that. The game was played in a friendly spirit and was enjoyed
by all. Ref had a couple of nightmare decisions but was OK overall. Doit
retired to the new Satu Lagi bar which is much improved and a pleasant
place for e beer or two. In summary, Denis Clarke played a blinder,
midfield was more mobile than usual, Ricardo had a good debut. And Sid and
the defence looked back at their solid self. Great start to the new year
and one to build on?

Scorers : Jean Pierre Sveke (1) (X-Pats), Wiwit (1) (X-Pats),
Manny (1) (Wanderers) A headline story almost bigger than Sven – the Kuningan
jinx strikes Wanderers again! After only just sneaking a win in last
year’s equivalent fixture, Wanderers again turned on a below par
performance in the wide open spaces of Kuningan to let a gob smacked
Expats walk away with only their second win of the season. The Expats
coach was too stunned to provide the usual in depth analysis of the team
performance leaving us to speculate if his new methods could herald a
successful run for a top half of the table position. The score says it all - after leading 1-0 at half-time & having numerous chances to score Wanderers couldn't seem to get a second to kill off the game. The long grass & sodden pitch meant the Wanderers struggled to play our usual fast passing game. The Expats just harried and battled that their lives depended on the game & boy did they get a result. The defence had performed well but made a mistake in not closing down JP who rifled a shot in off the post & what a goal. Within minutes there was a deathly silence as Expats got a second when the Wanderers keeper came out rather slowly and the Expat player stuck it in the back of the net. Although Wanderers had numerous chances, the Expats keeper played a blinder and I guess it was one of those days when it just wasn't meant to be. All credit to the Expats for a great win!!! ----------------
