Every match is up for grabs

Deutschland Rising!!! Three in a row. Bags of goals and German Plus back in the running. 6-0 versus Japan. 6-3 versus FC D's Place. And 5-1 versus DOIT Satu Lagi. Wow!  What a complete turnaround after a horridly disastrous start to the season and, just as I predicted in Newsletter No. 5, Deutschland would be back. And they are. With 40 years of Jakarta football history behind them, can anybody expect less of the oldest surviving member of the JIFL (and coached by the oldest man in the universe)? The only team standing in their way at the moment is The Mighty Lions at Sentul Stadium on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 PM. The Lions need this victory desperately to grab back a hold of 2nd place but suddenly there are new kids on the block. Suddenly, the total footballers of FC Knudde have inexplicably broken free of the pack and are mounting an assault on all those who oppose them with equal points and a game in hand. I just looked at the standings on the website and said, "Damn... would you look at that...?". The boys have steadily and solidly chipped away at it until they have positioned themselves at the top just under the perennial league favorites - the Wanderers. I expect a helluva game out of the Dutch boys come 2nd round when they meet the Wanderers should they continue on this superb run of victories that has suddenly befallen them.

Last week's resultsFC D's pulled a victory off of my buddies at BuGils 3-2 to start the pull out of the relegation zone yesterday. The Mighty Lions took a forfeit from the Jakarta X-Pats 2-0 when the X-Pats decided that they would rather give the game away then try to re-schedule it. The Magnificent Vikings ended in a draw last Wednesday with FC D's 1-1 at ISCI which did nothing for either in the standings. And finally, JIS (who want all to know that they were missing some key players) happily took a draw with the Wanderers last Wednesday who were fine with the result considering they, too, were missing several key players.

Now, depending on what happens this week, all kinds of positional changes could be taking place. JIS will need a special game in order to beat a tough Vikings side in order to temporarily maneuver into 2nd Place and the only way for them to maintain it will be if FC D's Place can overcome those boys in orange of Knudde on Friday evening at ISCI. A result for them would put FC D's back in the thick of things with 12 points. Meanwhile, as previously mentioned, the Mighties will need to take out the revived and revamped Germans (who, themselves, are aiming at that 4th place spot) in order to retake the top contenders spot. And, if all of that is not enough, in order for JIS to still comeback and gather up that 2nd place spot yet once again then they would need to beat a tough Team Japan side in their final match of the first half mid-December. And even that will be temporary since the Dutchmen have no intent on losing to my favorite club BuGils FC (whenever Wouter & Bart will stop squabbling and make a date for their make-up match which is already past it's due date). So Knudde have the possibility of knocking on the Wanderers door with a couple of victories here in the next week and ending the first half with 22 points. Wow, this is all too much for me. I am confused. Everybody everywhere is giving everybody else pastings left and right. There is no way to predict a result. Every match is up for grabs. But, one thing is for certain... it is exciting. As I have told you all before, I have never seen so many guys wanting to know the results of the weekends matches as this season. I just hope that the second half of the season is as interesting and as surprising as this first half has been.

Big Match of the Week - The Mighty Lions -vs- German Plus. The final game for both teams this weekend in the first half of the season. A chance for either to make a final mark on the league standings.

Player of the Week - Ibrahim Inousa of the Mighty Lions with six Man of the Matches out of eight games played.

Coach of the WeekDieter 'Methuselah Cremer of German Plus for stepping back, realigning his squad, and finally getting the chemistry right with goals-a-plenty.

Mention of the Week - Dave 'Super-Hendo' Henderson is recovering nicely from his burst appendix and will be returning to the Wanderers line-up in time for the 2nd half of the season. We almost had a martyr for the Church of Super Hendo and it was looking good there for a moment but then Rumah Sakit Bintaro went and saved his life at the last minute. Get better, Dave... we kind of miss ya...

Unless you live in another dimension (or North Korea) then you should be well aware that one of the top ten greatest footballers of all-time passed away this last week. George Best of Manchester United, Northern Ireland, and NASL Los Angeles Aztecs and Ft. Lauderdale Strikers fame was the first Football Popstar that ever existed. Before Beckham, before anyone else, there was George - first and foremost (who was even referred to as the 'Fifth Beatle' during his Manchester days). I was one of the fortunate ones who was able to see Bestie play on a weekly basis during his North American days. If I wasn't watching him playing live at the Kingdome against the Seattle Sounders then I was watching him on TV. I have a funny story to tell you about the NASL period of his life which few people actually know about. In the late 1970's, he was already under contract for the LA Aztecs when the club signed one of the greatest managers in football history, the father of total football, Rinus Michels of Holland, and would be pairing him up alongside the legendary Johan Cruyff who followed Michels from Barcelona.  Just about that time, George got introduced to Hugh Hefner and the Playboy Mansion where he promptly and permanently moved in one summer day. The boys from the team actually had to drive over to the Mansion to pick him up before training or they knew that he wouldn't show. One day, they 'effed' him off and didn't go drag him out of bed for training. Needless to say, Bestie didn't show up to training for two days.

When he finally did come around, Rinus Michels (who took no sheit off of anybody) brought him in the office and promptly put him on waivers for breach of contract (and general lack of discipline) thinking that that would perhaps shock him, wake George up, and get him to focus on his obligations towards winning a championship as was Michels intention on keeping him in the first place. Meanwhile, Ft. Lauderdale's manager pulled the sneaky one and actually claimed the waivers certificate the moment that it got registered at the NASL commissioner's office of Welshman, Phil Woosnam. Two hours later, George was on a flight to Ft. Lauderdale where he would join Gerd Muller and mates and the philosophy was, 'Training or no training... F*%k it!  We'll take Georgie anyday!'.

George Best loved living and playing in America and was often quoted (like many of that period) as saying that those were the best days of his career and life. I, for one, am glad that I was able to see him play so many times and like so many others will never forget the magic and joy that he single handedly brought to the game. Blow me! That man could dribble the ball like nobody!

Although Wanderers were missing a host of regular players, including Matteo, Mad Max, Andy Morton, Captain Carl, Dale (top scorer) Mulholland and Super Hendo, they still managed to hold the current league champions to a draw, and only one real chance in the game. However, it also wasn't our best ever offensive display as we only created real chances in the last 15 mins when we went close on a few occasions; not really a fitting game on the week that that Bestie bit the dust. In fact, a bore draw would be an apt desrciption of the game but nonetheless a precious result for the Wanderers who remain unbeaten and on the way to reclaiming the title.
Mike (Wanderers FC)

JIS has had a difficult time this year, already with 2 losses and 2 draws. With the loss of perennial league MVP candidate Jurrien Sietsma seemingly too much for the side to handle and the Wanderers so far running the table, JIS looked to this game to provide a measure of dignity and self-belief. Both teams were missing important (or at least self-important) players, with Wanderers without Dale “I’m a legend in my own mind!” Mulholland and Dave Henderson, and JIS with no less than six starters missing, including Gordon Boyd, Lee Hawkins, Owain ‘Vinnie’ Jones, Alaa Baky, Andreus, and the aforementioned Jurrien out with injuries. Matt Merritt was in goal for the first time in his life.

The match started with the Wanderers in complete control of midfield. However, after 15 minutes of nearly complete possession, the strike force tandem of Manny and Tommy Ambon had been essentially marked out of the game by a JIS defense that has had success in the past frustrating the Wanderers. Eventually, JIS began to assert themselves up front, with Thomas Weber, Uli, and the young Tae Hee Lee running at the more portly Wanderers’ back four. The half ended 0-0, with neither team able to muster any clear chances, save a Wanderers free kick that was easily handled by JIS’ Matt Merritt. This proved to be the only shot the wanderers had on goal the entire game.

The second half opened brightly for the Wanderers, who pressured the JIS goal in the first few minutes. But this was to be short-lived: the lion’s share of the half saw JIS assert control, with both Thomas and Doug Slusher providing wide runs to stretch the Wanderers. A frustrated Manny retreated to midfield, where he was still unable to find time and space to turn, while Tommy must have felt that JIS midfielder Stephane Thos had surgically attached himself to his backside. Stephane’s job on Tommy Ambon might be the best man marking display the league has ever seen.

On 25 minutes, Weber turned his man inside-out and rifled a shot that was saved only by the inside of the Wanderers’ far goal post. A few minutes later Tae Hee was in alone for JIS from a perfect Weber feed, only to prove that at 15 years old, he’s not quite ready to finish off a game. Weber had a patented half-volleys just go wide, and it seemed the Wanderers were in disarray. However, in a typically bi-polar display, the boys in black and white suddenly came to life in the last 10 minutes, pressuring the JIS midfield, and winning a succession of corners and free kicks. But it was not to be. The game finished 0-0, and as Dale helped himself to another beer from the JIS coolers, he was heard to remark, “Hey, 0-0, not a bad result for our B-team.” Whose B-team was that, Dale?

Well, this was probably the most frustrating game we've played all year. We took an early lead off of a great volley by Yuri five minutes into the contest, believing we were in control, until they scored the next four. The Germans played a great simple game, sending four players down the wing. We however, tried to pass the ball from one end of the pitch to the other. A player would have to take it off the chest, control it, and then beat two players. We're simply not that good. We did in the second half however, battle back and scored two quick goals to make it a one goal game, only for the Germans to respond with two of their own.
Geoff (D's Place)

After just  5 minutes in the game DIS PLACE took the lead - luckily German Plus could equalize and a penalty and 2 more goals did see the Germans leading 4 : 1 after 40 minutes. The second half saw a very focused DIS Place and in no time the score was reduced to 4 : 3 . Unfortunately for DIS Place and luckily for German Plus, the Germans did add 2 more goals to the  final score of 6 : 3 . German plus saw the gentleman from Kamerun as the man of the match for DIS Place. Thank you Nico we did enjoy the game. Some words to our player ian - did hold the defence together - (nico- herman - ardi - mattia  - ingo) Our twins on the right and darius, Thomas, elia on the left did push the ball through the midfield to provide scoring chances for Fredi, irvan, max and salomon. Scorer : first goal fredi, corner and goal, 2 nd  salomon alone against the DIS Place defense, 3 rd goal ian -  shoot from 25 m, 4 th goal fredi penalty, 5 th goal fredi shoot from distance, 6 th goal fredi from the side ljne - wish you all a pleasant first advent and a nice week.

We always seem to have tough games with the Vikings. This contest wasn't any different. We had some excellent opportunities throughout the game to score but misfired. This was a close game and both sides knew a goal either way was a winner. They had two headers in the second half that grazed the post but other than those, there squad was held in check. Final score: 0-0.

Played yesterday at BIS in Bintaro under perfect weather conditions with a nice cooling breeze all the time. German Plus hasn't won against DO IT for quite some time and were hoping that this might change. Both teams showed up with a squad of 16 players each and were both claiming some key players are missing. It started good for German Plus when after about 10 minutes we took the lead after some fine passing between Darius and Salomon, who then rocketed the ball into the left corner of the DO IT goal. The rest of the first half was a lot of midfield play with only very few shots on goal. Half time: 0-1. The second half became much more exciting.

Again after 10 minutes German Plus scored another one, thanks to an unstoppable bullet of Mathias Wanner. Shortly after that it should have been 3-0 for GP, but Irfan not only lifted the ball over Erwin, the DO IT keeper, but over the bar as well. Instead of being up 3-0 in return DO IT made it 1-2 with a nice header. This looked like being the turning point of the match for a short while as DO IT suddenly were the stronger team with more ball possession. However this lasted only for 5 minutes, then Salomon hit the post and Darius converted the rebound to make it 1-3. Another 7,5 minutes later it was Salomon himself again and it was 1-4 for German Plus. DO IT's resistance was broken and Leo made it 1-5 for German Plus in the dying minutes.

German Youth strike deep into Doit Territory
As always the playing conditions were perfect out at the Bintaro stadium, with the playing surface looking immaculate. Doit collected a strong squad of players for this tough fixture, but were even more surprised to see a dramatically different line up from German Plus. The old timers have done, what maybe some of the DOIT players should do, and have hung up their playing boots. Dieter and Peter both spending less than two minutes on the field but carefully nurturing their youth squad in preparation for the final offensive! One comment though if preparing for battle you should equip your men properly, more than 5 German Plus players started the game without shin guards, then complained when hurt in a challenge!

Doit welcomed the return of several veterans to the playing fold, namely Mike Whibley, Denis Clarke, Tim Parsons and especially John Tregilgas (just turned 53). The game started very evenly with Doit having a lot of the possession in the first 25 - 20 minutes.  Sheardy was given a hospital ball early on in the game which helped his dodgy knee no end and had to come off after about 10 minutes. The eager subs bench we fighting to get on in his place. Withey cricked his neck early on and had to have a massage at the side of the pitch. This would have been fine apart from the happy ending disturbing the play a little. On come COOPERMAN to replace Withey and he and Fandi terrorised the German plus defence. Doit failed to make the pressure pay and on 20 minutes the German plus team broke and scored with a rifle shot into the top of the net. The two teams battled it out until half time with no one really taking a hold of the last 15 minutes of the first half, with the only play of note being a fantastic save by Erwin of a strike into the top left hand corner of the goal.

Onto the second half which started late as one of the German Plus players was in the toilet, even though they had 5 on the bench (boy he must be good)! The game picked up tempo a little both in the footballing sense and in the tackling, with many minutes spent attending to German Plus players who were writhing around on the deck after challenges (which the ref did not see fit to punish because they were perfectly legitimate) Whibley coined the phrase China Germans as they appeared to be very fragile and easily damaged. Both teams were having to work hard for possession and the German Plus team scored a soft goal from a defensive viewpoint.

The ball broke to a player on the edge of the box, it bounced twice without a DOIT challenge being forthcoming and he coolly volleyed it into the top corner. This was what it took to spur DOIT into action and player manager McTeir made an appearance on the right midfield. This paid dividends (unlike the Co-Op) when from a corner Fabrizio rifled home a header from the edge of the six yard box. His celebration gave away how long it had been since he had scored and even at the end of the game (having lost 5-1) he had almost the biggest smile of any of the Doit players. Doit were energised from the goal and continued to press, with a feeling of anticipation that we could go on and take the points.

Only to have our hearts broken 5 minute later when German Plus sprung the offside trap and the player ran through one on one with Erwin.  He hit the post and the ball broke to a second Garman Plus player who taped it home while our back four watched from the half way line! It was then that tactical genius unfolded from the DOIT team who decided to drop down to 3 at the back in an attempt to salvage the game. This resulted in us leaking a further two goals which resulted in a flattering scoreline for German Plus. All credit to them their youth and skill beat us fair and square and if they can keep the line up they will do well against other league teams. Doit aiming for mid table mediocrity unfortunately. Sid played well at the back with Whibley, and Ronan had probably his worst game for us on Sat, hope it has worked its way out of his system in time for the Japan game.

High point of the day was the German Plus photo shoot, which had a rogue DOIT player displaying THE BIGGEST smile of the day behind the goals, please see picture, but be careful it contains some nudity. Poor lady who took the photo did not know where to look!

Week off next week, next game against Japan on Sat 17th December, at Sentul, KO 3:30.  Followed by the Christmas party at Chez Lucas. Remember to confirm availability and if attending the party names and ages of the Kids. Ass can be seen from the attachment Santa is not shy!!!!

After winning only one game thus far, this was a must win situation. We didn't want to fall too far behind the pack in the standings. As is the case this year, any team can beat another, so we certainly weren't taking this match lightly. We opened the scoring ten minutes into the game with a great effort from Alex, our Russian connection. We then conceded two, only to equal just before half time by Joel. We completely controlled the second half, having many opportunities to score but couldn't beat their keeper, who played well. When it seemed the whistle was going to be blown at any time, Sylvain cracked a ball into the back of the net in the 89th minute. A much needed victory. The pitch was awful. Rock hard, dangerous, and lacked proper lights. It was extremely difficult to see anyone or anything.
