JIFL Top scorers ------------------------------------------ :: Edito Denying anybody the chance to play football is a sin Dear Football Hooligans, Firstly, let me apologize for not churning out any newsletter last week. It seems like I am lazy and (although there might be some truth to that) I would like to defend myself and let you all know that I am the type of writer who needs inspiration to actually get down and put it all in words at any given time. Now, what happened is this: I was not able to go on the annual Manila 6-a-Sides trip this year ('cause of work) and I have been very depressed. That is my excuse and I am sticking with it. Anyway, if you haven't heard already,
the
ISCI Wanderers won the Plate in the tournament and
then happily let me know that they don't need me anymore. Joining the
Wanderers were Dr. Sakai, goalkeeper of the infamous
Mighty Lions and Gordon Boyd of current
champions JIS who apparently played fantastic according
to Tom 'Ten Bellies' Thomas (who, incidentally
and miraculously, scored two goals in the final to give the lads the
championship last Sunday). Along the way, the good Doctor saved 4 penalty
kicks with his lightning fast cat-like reflexes to help secure the silver. Apparently Angeles City flew their flags at half mass
this week when it was realized that I didn't show up for the tournament
this year and wouldn't be visiting that most wonderful of Asian cities. I want to publicly and officially apologize to the Philippines and assure
that wonderful country that I will be there next year even if I have to go
all alone and play as the only fellah on the field in a 1 versus 6
scenario.
He must have been an excellent
footballer So, what has happened this week in the JIFL? Firstly, the Wigan Lions temporarily dropped their foothold on their 2nd Place spot as both JIS and DOIT won over the weekend. Currently, any of six teams could take over that spot at least for a minute while all the others battle it out in a bid for one of the Champions League spots in 2006. That is a tight race and rarely seen at any level anywhere in the world. Also, in other matches, the Boys of DOIT suffered their darkest day in history when the Wanderers came out to BIS last week. 7-0 was the final score with one of the Wanderers' strikers taking a natural hattrick in the first 15 minutes. I saw the goals and they were superb. I am just amazed that he can still crack 'em in at his age. He must have been an excellent footballer when he used to play for a living several years ago. The Wanderers remain undefeated so far this season and remember that JIS are the only team to defeat the Wanderers in the last two years so it is going to be interesting to see what happens at the JIS Superdome next Wednesday night. Meanwhile, my buddies at BuGils drew with the Jakarta X-Pats 3-3 on Sunday and it looks like the X-Pats are on a role bagging points in every outing lately. Lastly, the total footballers of Knudde beat the magnificent Vikings 1-0 last night on Edward Vrieken's goal. You might recall that Eddie is a graduate of the ESE football school and started out originally playing against us all as a 14 year old when the ESE Youngsters were in the league a couple seasons back. In the near future I am going to do a follow-up story telling what happened to all of those boys who used to be among us.
And now some other musings about 'this and that':
Publicly
whipped That: Another thing (sorry, but I am going to go on a rant here)... what is this about a player showing up at a JIFL match and not getting to play in his team's game? That might be understandable if a specific team is playing in a super tight cup final or something of that sort but, in fact, the manager told him that he needn't dress for the match that day. Ridiculous. When I heard that it hurt my feelings. Denying anybody the chance to play football is a sin. You can go to hell for that! I would like to remind everybody out there that this is our league collectively. I can't believe that I have to repeat this: Playing football should be fun. It should be enjoyable. If a lad makes an effort to get himself all the way out to Sentul and then have some 'manager' tell him that he isn't going to be played that day for whatever reason, I think that the manager should be publicly whipped. So I will do it verbally right here. Here is my advice: Replace the manager. Retire him. Anything but let him 'manage' if you are in a club that does that type of nonsense. Agree or not, I rather think that that type of fellow had better move on to managing another sport. This ain't Manchester United. And certainly ain't the Bundesliga. You mean to tell me that our matches are so serious that only a select few are allowed to suit up and take the field? Former Cameroon international, Sunday Jang once said that, 'Common sense, my friend, is not so common'. Ain't that the truth! This: Former Wanderers manager Bernhard Schumm has now settled in the UAE working for the Emirates Football Association as their Technical Director. We should expect the UAE to qualify for the next World Cup in 2010 now that Bernie has the reigns. That: Last Saturday evening, Arema Malang (Timo 'Lil' Dale and Ralf Scheunamann's football club) won the Indonesian FA Cup Final against perennial runners-up Persija of Jakarta in a 4-3 double extra-over-time silver goal referee abandoned match which is par usual in local professional football. DJI SAM SOE put on a helluva show and made a first class effort of presentation that one rarely finds in South East Asian football. I'm gonna change over and start smoking that brand of cigarettes. This: Move over Deddy Carbuzier. There is a new sheriff in town. Mike Wildblood apparently has just graduated from hypnosis school so watch out all forwards and strikers in the JIFL. You might find yourself constantly falling over the ball or forgetting what you thought you were supposed to do with the ball when you play on his side of the field. Rumor has it that soon all teams will be in matching kits from top to bottom but, in reality, it could just be the 'Blood simply making us think that we all match. Thanks for reading my musings. A beautiful day and a very friendly game with no yellow cards. See you
next week and all of you a pleasant week .
We always lose the game after lebaran. We had already lost in the
spirits. ----------------

A natural hattrick in 15 minutes and the match was over. Manny played
superbly and grabbed himself another goal and Dave Henderson got yet
another 'Goal of the Year'. A full first time cracker off of yet another
Manny assist which flew in from 25 meters out like a rocket. Then the
President decided to finally start shooting the ball on goal rather than
always passing it away and boom he bagged two for himself. Jules Onana was
as sturdy and stable as ever holding up the midfield so that the rest of
us could play. Merriot played very well against Gareth Withe which helped
out considerably from the defensive side of the match. Husen also made
some terrific saves to deny any climb back for the boys in yellow. Tony
Latham is a welcome sight to have back in the team after the broken hand a
couple of months ago. Overall, the Wanderers finally have a nice chemistry
and mix of solid players that they never had before. DOIT's goalie is a
very good keeper but none of the goals were stoppable. Indeed, the DOIT
boys had some chances including a saved penalty. It was just one of those
days when nothing goes right for one team and everything goes right for
the other. I am sure that the second half of the season re-match will be
nothing like DOIT's darkest day of November 12th, 2005.
Squad selected from: Duncan Barneveld, Sid Whyte, Mick McTeir, Tim
Parsons, Gareth Withe, Eric Anderson, Ronan O'Neill, Neil Cooper, Matt
Parkin, Nick Czolak Fandi, & Rudy (John Tregilgas gets an appearance as he
was there but his bad back prevented him from coming on).
Manager McTeir, looked jaded and shaken as he began to fear the worst.
And it did happen, on 17 minutes Manny crossed to the near post where Dale
under heavy attention from Sid bundled the ball over from about a yard out
to seal his hat-trick. Doit picked themselves up and had a lot of
possession during the whole game but only managed to create half chances.
Rudy left his shooting boots behind on Sat and Gareth worked tirelessly up
front in what must have been a frustrating game for him. Minutes before
half time the Wanderers scored another to make it 4-0.
Eric was quoted as saying " that’s it with me and penalties, never
again ask me to take one". The reality was no one asked him this time!!!
To make matters worse in the next break, Wanderers ended up having a break
down the left where Manny turned Eric a beauty and centered the ball to a
gaggle (3 or 4) free wanders players, the first of which was Dave
Henderson, who rifled a shot home into the top right hand corner. Minutes
later one of the African wanderers headed home unmarked from a corner. The
last goal which was a mile offside (verified by Manny) rounded things of
to make it 7 - 0. We had plenty of possession and created a bunch of half
chances, the wanderers however created better quality chances which they
finished about 90% off. ----------------

A pretty tough game indeed, played between two teams showing a big
fighting spirit till the last action. Machia, D's Place Cameroon midfield
defender was definitely great as he has won all his challenges against the
three Cameroon players playing with Lions. Geoff also performed a
wonderful match, keeping the door locked in D's box. ----------------

In the first half Bugils gave JIS a good rum for their money and they
were very much in the game. However, it was all over when they conceded a
3rd goal right after the break. Score could have been even higher, if not
for some outstanding saves from the Bugils goal keeper. ----------------

An early start, 2pm but the clouds made the game easier, and Bugils
stormed the first 20 minutes with several shots on the Expats goal. Expats
gradually got into the game, but Bugils deservedly took the lead on the
whistle for the end of the half.
Team: Gary, Bambang, Dakos, Wiwid, Cedric, Gregoire, Carlo, Carlos,
John Pierre, Roberto, Alex, Ivan, David Nesbit, Anthony. The overcast
skies meant that the 14:00 kick off was not as painful as we originally
feared. Bugils generated most of the goal mouth action in the first half
and eventually put the ball in the net just before half time. -------------------------------------- :: JIFL Top scorers
