"Ours is the best"

Hear the Lions Roar! Feel the Vikings Battle! Well, an interesting ten days has passed in the JIFL this end of October and the Mighties have done it again. I am thinking of inserting ‘Giant Killers’ every time that they get mentioned for the rest of the season as last night, on their home turf, 2005 champions JIS felt their pain in an unprecedented 1-0 victory. The Lions, led by Captain Mark Dempsey, pulled a tight platform together to deny the champs few chances on goal. Arsen the Skunk aced the tap-in goal that did the damage and the Mighties are back in the points again. I think that, at this point, nobody is ever going to take a match against the Lions lightly ever again. Well prepared, enthusiastic, and experienced are the words that come to mind when contemplating the Lions current line-up (I am sure glad that I am always nice to the boys at the Lions, incidentally). Lions skyrocket back to 2nd place in the league and may just hold that position through the first half of the season assuming, of course, that they maintain that fine line-up that they have patiently brought together over the last few months.

Another rising star, The Magnificent Vikings have also had a marvelous run acing three in a row (until last night). The Wanderers showed up a little scared of the Vikes current form and the enthusiasm displayed in their warm-up which started a full thirty minutes before kickoff. But, despite the Wanderers angst, once the referee blew the whistle, one could tell that suddenly the boys in Newcastle-Rapid Wien-West Bromwich Albion-Juventus-Besitkas ‘Identi-Kits’ (and yet another new word that I am adding to the English language) were about to burst back into full bloom rapping in six against Big John Flood (who had a nice game himself I might add). Final score was 6-2 with the Vikings never giving in and taking two fine goals (could o’ had more) from Man of the Match Martyn ‘the Irishman’ Muntingh of Holland. I have to say three things to sum it up: 1.) It was a rather fine standard of football.  2.) It was one of the best matches that the Wanderers have ever played. 3.) The Vikings are a good team.

In other developments around the league, the Boys of DOIT continue on in strong form currently in a three-way tie for third place alongside the Vikings and in conjunction with Team Japan. Any of these teams is capable of taking out the other and which leads to some rather interesting match-ups whenever one comes up against the other.  In my opinion, it is by far the best standard overall that the JIFL has ever risen to in its nearly 20 year history. In other words, on any given night anybody can take anyone anytime anywhere. It’s cool. I like it.

I actually have that feeling that I had back in the old days when I got a little nervous before the match. Sometimes, I am even nervous in the morning when I wake up and think a little bit about the match that is going to be played later on that evening. I actually look at the tables and try to figure out who is going to win which match and how that is going to affect the league table. I check the results of matches being played via SMS. And, best of all, I see that it is just not me who appears overly enthusiastic. Many of the lads around the league are checking their team’s records and estimating what three points here or one point there will do to their club’s current standings and how it will affect the standings of others in the tables. It’s cool. I like it.  And, most of all, I am proud of our league.

I can honestly tell you that I have seen the levels of the other ‘JIFL’s around South East Asia and comparatively we play a better and more competitive standard than the others. We have a faster league than the others. And we have overall better teams than the others. One reason that this is true is simply that we have overall better individual players based here in Jakarta than the other ex-patriot cities in South East Asia. Said quite simply, “Ours is the best”. Now, one of the proudest days of my life is going to be the day that every team shows up in full matching kits from top to bottom.  There I said it. You heard me!

Wanderers started brightly by creating a lot and took a 3-0 lead early in the first half with goals from Keith, Dave Hendo and Dale. But Japan weren’t daunted and continued to create a lot of their own chances – only poor finishing stopped them from scoring in the first half. The second half continued in the same vain with the Wanderers looking lackluster and Japan looking the hungrier team attacking with pace down the flanks. The game had appeared to be fizzling out as it was still 3-0 with 15 minutes to go, however, 2 late goals from Japan brought the game suddenly back to life. This seemed finally to stir the Wanderers and a well worked goal by Manny and neat finish from Tommy made it 4-2 on the day, and another 3 away points in the bag. The game was also noteworthy for Timo making his Wanderers debut in the league.
Mike (Wanderers)

We are extremely regret that the match lost. Japan wins absolutely at 2nd Leg

Match abandoned due to lighting after approx 65 minutes of play, captains agreed result should stand.

Squad selected from: Duncan Bernevald, Erwin, Sid Whyte, Mick McTeir, Mike Whibley, Gareth Withe, Eric Anderson, Ronan O'Neill, Matt Parkin, John Tregilgas, Fabrizio, Denis Clarke, Nick Czolak Fandi, & Rudy.

5 STRIKES AND YOUR OUT!
With Bugils having given the Wanderers a run for their money we were a bit unsure what to expect. During the week we had 23 players available so the management team had to make the hard decision to enforce pre selection and cut down the team numbers to 15. The players who did turn up were keen as mustard and a little shower before the game livened up the surface a bit to suit our game. Doit started very well. With only 5 minutes gone a quick exchange of passes down the right ended with a through ball to veteran striker Denis Clarke who rifled it home past the keeper.

Another break down the right about 10 minutes later by flying Scotsman McTeir who beat two players and managed to keep the ball from going out before he whipped in a precision cross. Veteran Denis met the cross with a Van Basten-esque style scissor volley which flew past the outstretched keep. One of the finer goals the pitch has seen in a few years not just because of the flying finish but the build up was through a fine series of interchange passes! Doit then continued to play good football, dominating the midfield and looking dangerous down the flanks with Fandi terrorising the Bugils defence. Even the distraction of some very pretty bugils barmaids supporting their team was not enough to upset the Doit team, however, there was one episode which entailed Sid Whyte scrambling around on the ground and scooping the ball of the line with his trailing leg to avert a goal. With 10 minutes of the half to go Bugils started to pressurise the Doit goalmouth with Duncan saving the day a couple of times before half time. At the stroke of half time the heavens opened and there were some lightening strikes very close to the campus, so we had to evacuate the playing fields due to the new lightening detector, which the school requires us to use.

The half time break lasted about 30-40 minutes while we waited for the storm to pass and the rain to abate. With play resuming Doit were quickest to get back into their stride and miracle of miracle the smallest man on the field scored with a fantastic header. After a nice build up down the right resulting in a pinpoint cross to the penalty spot where there lurked a little scouse entertainer (Tarby) called John Tregilgas. He rose unmarked to head home into the keepers bottom right hand corner and his smile was as wide as the Mersey by the time the ball hit the net. This inspired the 52 year old who started flying up and down the right wing and 5 minutes later he centered a ball from the by line to pick out Rudy at the far post who tapped it home, after pushing Gareth out of the way.

However Gareths opportunity came about 10 minutes later when he cut inside from the left hand side and curled it into the net past the outstretched keeper from just outside the box. A very convincing 5-0 lead and Doit looking for more, when the weather turned against us one more time. PE Head of department Mr Denis Clarke advised the teams to leave the field and informed us it was unlikely we would be able to finish. The referee wanted to stop as well and advise us we had between 10 -15 minutes of play left. At this point the team captains agreed that the result should stand and it was time to open the beers and "Buka Puasa"!

No more games for a few weeks as we have agreed to delay the Japan fixture until 17th Dec. Planning a friendly against ISCI on Thursday 27th at 7:30 to keep us in match fitness and the low carb GI diet is spreading to several team members, including the lethargic Ronan O'Neil who had cut out carbs altogether this week and found his energy levels dissipated. So much so he had to strip down during the game as the three layers of underwear were making him to hot! Sid Whyte has lost 8 pounds but he doesn't remember what bar he was in at the time!

Players of note were Whibley at the backbone of the defence with Sid, Nick "midfield general" Czolak, Matt Parkin "the silent assassin", Gareth and Denis double act up front, Rudy adding to his top scorer total in JIFL and last but not least Little John who will be recounting his goal for the next few months every time he has a beer in Bugils (and believe me he will have a few of those). Great result and finally we seem to be playing the way we always new we could. Management secure for another week and may have to sell a player or two to pay the leboran bonus to our indo players!!

Enjoy the break for the next few weeks, but try and keep the pounds off to stay in ship shape!

Mick (Doit)

Following a big talk-up in the newsletter by Dale, Bugils proceeded to go 2-0 in 10 minutes, with our makeshift central defence partnership not being able to cope with the head or skill of the DIU forwards (the second goal was a particularly sweet volley!). However, one of players had brought his cousin JW along, who was brought on in an inspired move by Lens on the touchline. He obviously wasn't very impressed thus far, and his first bellowing cry was "FASTER, YOU IDIOTS" when the Bugils back 4 were a little slow in clearing their lines. (Dale, can this be quote of the week?)

Anyway, Bugils looked at least level (if not better than DIU) for the rest of the half, until the lightning meter at BIS (we imagine a man up a tall metal pole on the roof??) said we had to suspend the match for about 30 minutes. Our lads had opened beers, and we were discussing the rules for rematches, when the 'lightning meter man' said it was okay to play on.

Bugils tried their hardest but weary legs meant that DIU scored a couple more, until the lightning meter man said stop again. After a very fairly fought 65 minutes, and the dilemma whether to continue, Bugils chose to concede the game. Well done DIU, who are back to winning ways.

Sat. Oct. 15th ISCI Lions FC 4 5 Vikings FC

Scorers: Arifin (2) (Lions), Ben (1) (Lions), Rizal (1) (Lions), Daniel (1) (Vikings), Martyn (1) (Vikings), Peter Scott (1) (Vikings), Ronaldo (2) (Vikings)
MOM:
Ibrahim (Lions), Ronaldo (Vikings)
Referee appreciation : 3/10 (Vikings), 5/10 (Lions)
Yellow cards :
Peter (Vikings), Danquah (Vikings)

The game kicked off between two evenly matched teams. Both teams played some attractive football and with chances for both sides the Lions went into half-time 1-0 up. The Lions Japanese goalkeeper, Sakai, was again outstanding and kept the Vikings scoreless for the first half. Then the blue touch-paper was lit. The game exploded into a frenzy of neat football and hard tackles as both sides went for the jugular.

Early on the Lions struck what should have been a blow for the Vikings and scored a second. This started the tit-for-tat rash challenges and the end-to-end goal mouth action. The referee seemed invisible during some heated arguments and was abused on a regular basis yet took no action. With 15 mins left the Lions were up 4-2 and seemingly coasting but the majority of the players decided that they wanted a piece of the action and piled forward looking for further goals.

This left the Lions defence under unnecessary pressure and a couple of times left the Vikings attack outnumbering them. The Vikings made the most of the Lions inadequacies and proceeded to score 3 goals - the last coming in injury time. Well done Lions - a perfect example of gaining a defeat out the jaws of victory. No need to worry as this will only make us stronger - bring on the Wanderers - it is time to avenge years in the doldrums and strike a blow for the little guy.
Paddy (Lions)

Vikings are not quite sure what happened and think Lions would be in a similar mindset, however, the fact is that after having trailed 0 – 2, 1 – 3, and 2 – 4 with 15 minutes to go Vikings won 5-4. It must be one of the best come-backs ever in the JIFL.

As the rumors (read: Dale) would know Lions has significantly improved since last season and with 5 very fast and technically very good players going forward it turned out to be a very difficult night for the Vikings defense and although we managed to come back at 0-2 and 1-3 nothing much indicated that Vikings was going to leave with points when Lions scored to 4-2 with about 15 minutes to play. However, 2 goals within a couple of minutes by Ronaldo without much assistance we had drawn level and would have been very satisfied had we been able to secure 1 point in this match. But this was not to be as Peter Scott took matters in his own hands and scored an absolute screamer from outside the box to bring the score to 5-4 in Vikings favor. We simply could not believe the result and apparently nor could Lions

I have given the referee 3 out of 10 because he did not award yellow cards until well into the 2nd half disregarding a number of bad faults was made of which Vikings accounted for their share in 2nd half. Fortunately, both teams constrained themselves so we avoided ugly scenes. We understand that the referees are new to the JIFL but they should be told that it is part of their responsibility to control the matches (although teams and particular the Captains are supposed to be supportive) and that yellow cards should be awarded for sliding tackles from behind and similar.

It is also difficult to find the rational behind one player being awarded a yellow card while another get away with a freekick for almost pulling the pants of an opponent. Also it would be useful if the linesmen had basic knowledge about offside and that one can be offside even if the pass originates from the players own half. Having complain to his credit the referee manage to award most of the free kicks and other dead ball situations to the right side. Finally 4 out of 10 to ISCI for a good pitch but for whatever reason ISCI has not bother to refresh the lines so we played on a pitch with no markings whatsoever. ISCI should be told to do better.

MOM: Machia (D's), Thomas Weber (JIS)

Referee appreciation : 2/10

Well, I thought we were definitely going to get a point or better. At half-time, JIS were dubiously hanging on to a 2-1 advantage with D's threatening to score on several opportunities. Five minutes into the second half, we gave up a penalty kick that was miraculously saved and scored on the ensuing counter-attack to tie the game. Jis took the lead when an intended cross ended up in the back of our net. We were confident we still had a chance but they scored two fast-break goals to end it. End result: 2-5
Geoff
(D's Place)

Good and physical game in which D’s place made JIS work very hard to get the 3 points. First half was pretty even in which JIS went 1-0 up through a beautiful volley from Stephane direct from a Lee corner. D’s tied the game within a few minutes before Gordon showed his skills with a fine taken goal after 20 mins. An outstanding Andreas Jakubowski in goal for JIS, who made two crucial saves, made sure to preserve the JIS lead into half time 2-1

In the second half Uli was fouled inside the D’s box. Penalty for JIS, which was saved by D’s goalie and 1 minute later it, was 2-2 with D’s taking advantage of some sloppy JIS defending.

Halfway the second half Gordon made amends for his earlier penalty miss and scored 3-2 with a little help from Lady Luck. After this goal D’s didn’t have the energy to come back once again and goals from Thomas and our guest player Justus made it 5-2. A bit flattering for JIS, because D’s have a much improved side who can give any team a very hard time. It would not be a surprise if they will get some results soon.

By the way, we had a new referee and he was just awful. Terrible fouls were overlooked, yellow cards were given for light offences and he even managed to give one of our players a yellow card for not taking a throw in quickly enough??? Let’s hope that not all the ‘new’ refs are of his standard….

Scorers: Ronaldo (1) (Vikings), Staus (1) (Vikings)
MOM:
Eli (Bugils), Jesper (Vikings)
Referee appreciation : 7/10 (Bugils), 5/ 10 fairly decent without being really good (Vikings)
Yellow cards : Bart (Bugils)

Bugils fielded a strong midfield and defence, but were without Neil and Will up front. Nevertheless, it would be fair to say Bugils had slightly the better of the first half, with more chances although no real clear-cut ones. The Vikings played some nice slick football in the second half and went a goal up as their forward beat our off-side line and finished well. Bugils kept the pressure up and feel our pressure deserved a point, but with 5 minutes to go and most of our team in the opposition penalty area, Vikings
made a quick break and finished the match off.
Mark (Bugils)

It did not take long before the match turned into a midfield battle dominated by too many imprecise passes a somewhat indecisive defending. Bugil’s did not create even half a chance with the best opportunity falling to Ronaldo who unfortunately missed the goal when one-on-one with the goalie.

2nd half started as the 1st had ended but about midway through the half Jonathan broke through down our right flank and made a very good pass that once again left Ronaldo one-on-one with the goalie and this time he did not miss. Bugil’s decided to go for all or nothing and we were quite a lot of pressure with John pulling out a very good reflex save and Marvin cleaning the ball with a bicycle kick just before Bugil’s was about to equalize. Eventually an energetic effort by Ruben provided a break through for Staus and he did not fail to put the ball away and effectively ending the match. As usual Bugil's were behaving as good sports.

ISCI need to be told in claer terms that it is unacceptable that they do not mark the pitch. As against Lions on Saturday the pitch was not marked yesterday which resulted in a freekick against the Bugil's goalie for using hands outside the box simply because he could not see the line. The referee as it is not uncommen in JIFL the referee did not follow the rules which would have resulted in a red card but fortunately he did not pull out any card. But ISCI should be told to do the job!!!!!!

Sat. Oct. 22th ISCI Lions FC 2 0 Bugils FC

Scorers: Ben (1), own goal
MOM:
Ibrahim (Lions), Mark Temple (Bugils)
Referee appreciation : 8/10 (did well, whilst we can all argue about yellow cards etc. he maintained control with his red and yellow cards - better that, than the
game become even more niggly-Bugils)
Yellow cards : Neil Donovan (Bugils), Jacob (Bugils), Arsen (Lions), Ben (Lions), Mark Dempsey (Lions)
Red card : Eli (Bugils)

Heavy rain had the players torn between joining the rugby lads' piss-up and abandoning the match, or waiting for a delayed kickoff. In the end, we started at 8pm after I assured the ground staff we would go easy on his pitch. Erm....Lions and Bugils avoid sliding tackles? - it was never going to happen!

Lions dominated the first few minutes and deservedly took the lead as the Bugils back 4 were at sea after a strong Lions counter-attack. Bugils then clawed their way back into the game gaining more and more possession, until a. Neil and Eli both got booked for retaliation and b. JP put through his own net (the top corner) from 20 yards. This was unlucky as JP had been doing sterling defensive work previously. Cue half-time, 2 nil down but holding the lions.

With Neil back on the pitch, we hoped to pull one back, but Bugils' chances dissipated with the sending-off of Eli. Now, whether the guy actually got clobbered by the flailing arm or not is a debating point, but we accept Eli's red card as you can't raise your hands like that. The remaining period actually saw more Bugils pressure with 10 men than 11, and a few half-chances renewed the Bugils Boys' enthusiasm. In the end, a Lions win was a fair result, and the post-match talk revolved around whether Ray would
rejoin the Lions (although I imagine the costs of Ray's goggles (20 million was mentioned) would be prohibitively expensive for the Lions cheque-book!)
Cheers, and have a good holiday everyone,
Mark (Bugils)

The game started following three weeks rain in 45 minutes which forced the kick-off to be delayed for an hour. When it eventually started some very attractive football was played by both teams with the highlight of the half being the 20 yard volleyed own goal that flew like a rocket into the top left hand corner of the net! Any Premiership footballer would have proud and should qualify not as as goal of the season but goal of the decade - it had to be seen to be believed. A close second was Dempsey's amazing leap followed by a triple salsa and pirouette finishing nicely with a referee's yellow card for 'nearly' handling the ball. Fortunately for him the referee couldn't quite grasp the torrent of Glaswegian abuse that exploded from his face that had people within a couple of miles thinking that there was an IDF raid on the clubhouse at ISCI.

From this moment on the game deteriorated with little niggling fouls that raised the temperature of the game and with it the referees control. Bad fouls went unpunished while innocuous challenges received yellow cards (I think a total of 7 yellows and a red were shown and the game was not that bad). After about 25 minutes a blatant penalty for the Lions was not given when young Ben, the Lions superstriker, was brought down with a kick that would have felled an Ox and the referee simply did what we expected, "play on", Obviously Ben committed the cardinal sin and although went down convincingly failed to scream like he had been shot. Half-time couldn't come quick enough.

The second half kicked-off with both teams playing some excellent attacking football showing quite a dramatic improvement on last season. The Lions took the initiative and Ben completed another good performance with the second goal of the game - his 10th of the season so far. With the blue touch paper lit a bit of nastiness ensued with an elbow connecting with a Lions face resulting in a red card for one of Bugils 'younger-generation'. This appeared to finish the game off for Bugils but also seemed to gee-up the referee as he still managed to raise a couple of yellow cards for fouls that my 3 year old daughter wouldn't have complained about.

Both teams fought hard for a win but unfortunately there had to be loser. Well played Bugils and Lions. At the aftermatch drinks both teams discussed the evenings events with Bugils just about edging the sarcastic retort, purely because Ray had stayed and everyone had someone to abuse.

The game was summed up perfectly by Arsene Wenger - "we received 7 yellow cards today but only deserved half of them!"

MOM: Tony (Knudde), N°17 (G+)
Referee appreciation : 5/10
Yellow cards : Raoul van Heijst (Knudde), Tony (Knudde)

After the early opening goal by Knudde, German Plus put pressure on the Knudde defense for most of the match but left only 3 defenders behind against our 3 fast strikers Tony, Elwin and Stefan. As a result Knudde scored 3 counter goals by man of the match Tony. The match was played in a very good atmosphere although the Knudde boys had several verbal fights with eachother without any particular reason. I guess that is the disadvantage of all speaking the same language....

I guess I forgot to report on the previous match of Knudde against Wanderers that we lost 1-4. The Knudde goals was scored by Elwin de Groot, his fourth of the season. MOM Knudde was Tony, and Tommy Ambon for the Wanderers.
Wouter (Knudde)

Both teams showed up with a squad of approx. 16 players each, German Plus due to the party at the German school with no youngsters at all. German Plus players:
Dieter - Stefan - Ralph - Andre - Isaac - Ian - Frederic - Carl + Luke (guest players from America) - Bernhard Breit + Frank Hartmann (guest players from Germany - Frank second half in goal) - Patrick - Mulyono - Ardi - Irfan -Hermann

Knudde took the lead with their first attack after just two minutes. Once
againthe German Plus defence look very bad. An unstoppable rocket shot by Tony
after 15 minutes made it 2-0 for Knudde.Ten minutes later German Plus scored a clear and correct goal, but it wasdenied by the referee team, something what even Knudde players couldn'tunderstand. Shortly before the break the knockout for German Plus when Tony scored another beautiful goal. Halftime 3-0 for Knudde. Second half German Plus played better, but after just ten minutes it was 4-0 for Knudde and later our goalkeeper wanted to give a present to Knudde, however Knudde denied acceptance and only hit the post.

Vikings are a good team. Wanderers are just a little better. Both teams played well. Wanderers are in their best form at the moment. Vikings are strong. Excellent standard. Referee was 7 or 8 out of 10.
Dale (Wanderers)

Subscribing to the notion that everything can happen in football we thought we might have an outside chance to get something out of the match against Wanderers but a very disappointing performance in 1st half ended this illusion. We did better in 2nd half and we are of the opinion that we scored not 2 but 3 goals as the Wanderers goalie saved an effort behind the line but it would have had no influence on the final outcome. We simply lost to a much better team and with 24 points from 8 matches it is hard to come up with anything except natural catastrophes that will prevent Wanderers winning back the Championship

However, I do have some serious concerns about the mental state of the Wanderers. Naturally, each team has a loony or two that insist on a bit of pre-match stretching but never in my 13 years participating in the JIFL have I experienced an entire team sitting in a circle whilst stretching out AFTER the match. Not before last night that is. What has become of JIFL?

Fair and fsat game with the much improved Lion's with the additional
