A crucial weekend for JIFL standings

Weekly WrapDown - This week in the JIFL

The JIFL witnessed some interesting but perhaps not surprising results this last weekend with the exception of one game – Team Japan versus the Mighty Lions. That was the big game of the weekend. That was the decider of who is going to dominate that Top Contender spot for perhaps the rest of the season...  Personally, I thought with the momentum that the Mighties have been building over the last couple of months that it would have served them through that match but, unfortunately (for them), Team Japan thought otherwise. Sugimoto & Company burst the balloon into several parts with a convincing 3-0 win and with Sugi himself taking two of the goals after some confusion and missed clearance balls from the Lions defenders. Sugi swooped in behind the defenders took advantage of their missed clearances and got himself situated into a couple of one-on-one scenarios against the Mighties new goalkeeper Dr. Chikaya Sakai (Sugi’s best friend) and coolly slotted home. Disappointed the Mighties might be but down and out they are certainly not.

Simultaneously at Sentul, the Magnificent Vikings add another 3 points to their total with a victory over the struggling German Plus side at 1-0.

In another match-up during the week, the total footballers of Knudde played a smart match against league leaders the Wanderers but no joy prevailed. The Wanderers got a lucky toe-punch which surprised the keeper for the first one and then Tommy Ambon went to work creating and finishing yet another goal on the one-two side-foot in to increase the pressure. Knudde played a nice tight passing game with Edward Vreiken stepping up and playing beyond his years but unfortunately were unable to convert a chance until near the end of the half when Elwin de Groot slotted a penalty home.  Then the Wanderers came out in the 2nd half and got another lucky goal off of a header and, finally, finishing with Tommy capping it off with his second of the game and the Man of the Match honours as well. Final score ended 4-1 and again both sides sported a lovely match with no complaining and no cards even being considered by anybody within a fifty-mile radius.

In the week’s final match-up, current Champions JIS gave a soft pounding to German Plus at 3-0 with JIFL All-Star Gordon Boyd netting yet another two to his collection.  Deutschland is off to the worst start in their 40 year history but, even so, let it be known that they are in the develop stages of building their new line-up on the youth players from GIS. Given a bit of experience and knowing the German’s determination and drive, believe me, “Jawohl!  Ve Vill Return!  Deutschland Deutschland… Ja!”

This weekend is a crucial weekend for JIFL standings. Every match played and the impending result will echo and reverberate for months to come. Starting with the total footballers of Knudde versus the hard tackling and physical FC D’s Place Friday evening at ISCI to the final match Saturday evening at ISCI with the Mighty Lions battling for a third place spot against the Magnificent Vikings. In between, we have the Contenders of the Season, Team Japan trying to pull off at least a draw against early league favorites the Wanderers at Stadium Sentul on Saturday afternoon.   Rumour has it that Timo Lil’ Dale Scheunamann is in town to fortify the Wanderers midfield. Although some may consider that game to be the Match of the Week, I would argue that it has to be shared this weekend with the Boys of DOIT coming up against the league’s most improved of the season BuGils FC

If I only had a single ticket available to see only one of these fine match-ups this weekend then I would go for the DOIT versus BuGils match (since, as you may already know, I am a staunch BuGils supporter).

Referee Clarification: The JIFL referees are by and large new this year because the old ones all got hired onto better paying and greener pastures. So be gentle boys and we will break them in to our liking with a little patience and understanding.

Schumm Update: The Wanderers have decided to release former Bayern Munich Technical Director, 1860 Munich Head Coach, Selangor of Malaysia 1993 Champions Coach, Indonesian Technical Director & National Team Coach, UAE National Team Director, and AFC Technical Consultant, UEFA licensed coach and ESE (Euro Soccer Excellence) Director Bernhard Schumm to Dubai where he is negotiating an offer from the FA to take over the Technical Directorship again. At the same time, top Indonesian club Persija has put in a bid to retain his services as Director of Coaching, as well. We all wish Bernie good luck in his pursuit of a new position outside of the JIFL. You always have a job waiting in the JIFL whenever you are ready again.

Euro Soccer Excellence Update: ESE FC is up and running on Thursdays from 4:15 to 6:00 PM weekly at ISCI. All ages are welcome from the youngest bambinos (6 years and under); 8 years and under; 10 years and under; 12 years and under and all the way up to the U-16’s.

All JIFL interested parties can contact Marvin Suwarso at
marvins@indosat.net.id for additional information. ESE is the only football academy in Jakarta where you will find fully licensed professional coaches working at youth soccer level on a continual and professional basis. Feel free to bring your children out and give ESE a test run free of charge. If you all like it then by all means Sign Up!.

Japan team got 2 goal in the first half by the swift attack of Mr. Goal getter Sugimoto.
A goalkeeper at that time was a teammate until last year. Mr. Sugimoto had a high motivation for getting goals before a game begins. Japan team added 1 goal in the 2nd half, and we could win. Even though it was written that LIONS FC is in a rise opportunity on the JIFL WEB, Japan team is in a rise opportunity too.

Scorers: Michael Stausholm (1) (Vikings FC)
MOM: Freddi (German Plus)

Referee appreciation : 8/10

Axel Hertzke (Vikings) (yellow)

A yellow card should have been issued for a hard tackle from behind by one of the Vikings. Other than this, he allowed a physical game to be played without allowing it to get out of hand. German Plus MOM: Tobias?? It was not announced at the end of the match but I did hear some related talk concerning Tobias and MOM so, unofficially, he
gets the honors.

Once again German Plus found it difficult to put the ball where it counts, in the back of the net. Overall, the young (unless an average age is considered then the Dieter factor comes into play) and relatively new team (considering returning players from last year) is playing better football but still needs to work out a few organizational gliches and put together a strong performance for the full amount of time.

The Vikings started strong with an initial onslaught at the German goal. The German defense held, and responded with their own strong attack at the other end of the pitch. The game settled down into a good solid battle with both teams creating several scoring opportunites. Eventually the Vikings took full advantage of their big man on a corner kick set play. Perhaps too much attention was given to the big man which allowed another Viking player to win a head ball that should have been cleared. The header landed at the feet of the big Viking who hit the ball rather weakly but well enouhg to somehow make it through the legs of the German Plus player protecting the post and the goalie - a bit of luck but a goal none the less.

Both teams battled hard; each hitting the post once in the second half and creating several other good opportunities at goal. As the match progressed, the Vikings had a bit more of the mid field play and were able to control the ball from their defensive line. In the end the Vikings managed to hold on to their one goal lead until the final whistle. Overall a good game, with both teams playing hard but with the right spirit.
Ian (German plus)

Yet another match against German Plus that went down to the wire saw Vikings taking the lead in late 1st half after a corner skillfully was headed down for Mr Stausholm who delivered a good finsih. We feel that we should have closed the match in early 2nd half with a few open headers not finding the net and a nice chip on the crossbar but once again missing to convert chances was to cost us dearly, or rather almost cost us dearly as German Plus in late 2nd half missed a very open chance when the ball hit the upright but Vikings finished with yet another effort hitting the crossbar. We have now hit the wood work 2 times in each of the 3 matches we have played. As always German Plus were good sports and we think it was a fairly open match until the last whistle.
Jesper (Vikings FC)

The first 20 minutes were balanced between the two teams, in the 25th minute JIS took the lead supported by weak defending of German Plus. Half time 1-0. 5 minutes into the second half more support was granted to JIS when our goalkeeper let a relatively easy ball pass through. He however later in the match produced some fine saves and was awarded man of the match. To round things up after one hour or so we produced an unstoppable own goal. The victory for JIS was however deserved and it is clearly visible that German Plus have serious problems with the defence.
Peter (German Plus)

JIS bounced back from last weeks poor showing against Do It with a convincing 3-0 win against German +. In the first half the match was pretty even and both sides could have scored. Only Gordon managed to convert one of the many chances. In the second half JIS had the upper hand and could have easily scored more goals, German keeper had some awesome saves to keep the score respectable. Gordons second goal, after another Lee assist, settled the tie. Butch managed to add a third with the help of a German defender who deflected the ball into his own net. We are looking forward to next weeks clash with league leaders Wanderers.........
