Climax this Saturday at Stadium Sentul

Weekly WrapDown - This week in the JIFL

DOIT –vs- JIS - Just as I predicted, the boys at DOIT are mounting their comeback. A deserving victory over 2005 Champions JIS registered in the books on Wednesday night to the tune of 3-1. I would assume that that is the match that DOIT sorely needed to get back online and, more importantly, to keep 2005’s Manager of the Year, Mick McTeir’s contract intact for at least another week (I also noticed that Mick Wibbley-Wobbley was back in the side and it seems that they never lose at DOIT whenever he is on the field). What is in store for the boys in yellow? I will tell you: A terrific Bugils side waiting in the wings. That should be the Match of the Week next week and now with the new toll road getting us all out to BIS in lickity-split time, the old excuse that ‘so and so’ couldn’t make it or half the team was late, etc, etc. are no longer valid. Come on BuGils!

Jakarta X-Pats –vs- Wanderers – One of the nicer matches this season sporting-wise. The boys in the team of X-Patria came to ISCI without Bambang (owes me a million) and any Indonesian players on Wednesday evening. They were led by Jean Pierre (J.P.) Seveke who played exceptionally well and deservedly got the Man of the Match honours displaying lovely touch and deft control and some penetrating passes with one superbly placed cross (just in back of the defenders) finally ending up as a terrific diving header upper ‘V’ goal from Manager / Captain Gary Sable.

JIFL Sportsmanship Update: Manny was a complete gentleman throughout the match; got two strong goals and was rewarded with Man of the Match honours by the boys of X-Patria.

The Mighty Lions –vs- Knudde – The Mighties continue their march toward their first JIFL title attempt with a deserved win over league founders and the total footballers of Knudde last Saturday night at ISCI with a 3-1 victory.

JIFL Sportsmanship Update: Knudde manager, Wouter Lindner, has spoken with Lions manager, Andy Hollingshead, about Andy staying on his own side of the pitch in the future during the JIFL matches. Andy has whole-heartedly agreed with Wouter and so things continue in a positive light. Well negotiated, managers!

BuGils FC –vs- Team Japan – My favorite team BuGils went down to JIFL 2nd place holders Team Japan last Saturday at Sentul Stadium. A near capacity crowd of over 20,000 spectators was there mainly to see the new stars of BuGils that they have so often read and heard about in recent weeks. But perennial goal scoring king, crowd favorite and JIFL beloved, Sugimoto, was there to ruin the day for the boys in Green Hornet green.

Jurrien recovering – Superstar and JIFL All-Star Jurrien Sietsma is on the road to recovery after major knee surgery in Singapore last week. Jurrien believes that he will be back around January in the New Year. I believe in him, also. And we all hope for a speedy and complete recovery for one of the JIFL’s finest.

JIFL Golf Tournament in planning – The 1st ever Annual JIFL Golf Tournament is in the planning stages right now. We, of course will need input on when is the best day to hold the tournament which will feature at least 4 golfers from each JIFL team. OB Golf & Lifestyle Magazine will be the organizers and sponsors of the event and it is likely that Cengkareng Golf Club will be the venue. Golf Professional and Wanderers player, Darren Kelso, of Canadia (I have decided to change the name of that country) is available to give lessons to any interested party. Contact the JIFL webmaster Nico Sanders at jifl@esefc.com for Darren’s contact information.

Manila (that is in the country of the Philippines) 6-a-Sides – Any interested parties for the best 6-a-Side tournament in the world (after Knudde’s) should also contact Mr. Sanders as stated above. The tournament will be held November 19th & 20th followed by an excursion to the resort town of Angeles City (rated as ‘the best male tourist attraction site on earth’ by Travel & Leisure Magazine in the 2005 November issue).

Phuket (that is in the country of Thailand) 6-a-Sides - Another tournament the following week of November 26th and 27th will be held in Thailand and the resort of Phuket. Again contact Nico and he will put you in touch with the organizing committee asap.

ISCI football Thursdays & Sundays – Just to let all JIFL members know once again that ISCI has a team which is comprised of the various JIFL members. All are welcome! Games are on Thursday evenings at 7:30 PM and Sundays at 5:00 PM. Playing at ISCI gives one a chance to improve fitness and sharpen individual skill and team play. More, importantly, it gives one a chance to befriend other players from the league and experience playing for some of the world’s best footballaires.

Game Kits – Matching shirts and shorts and socks and numbers on the jerseys are now demanded by collective bargaining from the JIFL Player’s Union. After months of negotiations between JIFL owners and the Union representatives it was agreed at the deadline hour of midnight last night that all teams must in future match uniformly. Hence the word ‘U-N-I-F-O-R-M’. The word ‘uniform’ comes from the Latin for Uni (meaning ‘one’) and form (meaning ‘style’). Union reps have forced the owners of the JIFL teams to finally dole out for complete matching kits from top to bottom. It is now up to each manager / captain to comply with the new ruling. Carl Albillot, long time and well represented UP of the Wanderers, even managed to force his owners to shell out for matching bowling bags (with logos and all) perfect for carrying the odd human head in when out and about town. Well done, Carl!

Retraction for JIS – Vikings are to blame! I have to apologize for getting the JIS boys into trouble with the Top Man in last week’s newsletter. Apparently, JIS did, indeed, offer to play downstairs on the grass field rather than on the plastic in the stadium (which had been taken over the JIS Varsity in preparations for the annual tournament of South East Asia) and the Magnificent Vikings refused to play on the grass for some inexplicable reason which completely eludes my experience and mental capacity. Someone out there actually prefers the artificial to the natural? I guess some people would call that ‘progress’. I call it ‘weirdness’. Probably those same fellas who prefer the fake over the real also prefer virtual chat rooms over real conversation with women and also prefer Bintang ‘Zero’ over actual beer as well. Well, who am I to judge? ‘To each his own,’ as my Mommie always used to say.

‘Match of the Week’Lions –vs- Team Japan – This week’s top feature will be the current 2nd and 3rd place powerhouses fighting for the Contenders spot as potential JIFL Champions 2006. The action will come to a climax this Saturday at Stadium Sentul. Price of admission is $25. USd per ticket or $60. USd for a ‘Family Pack’ which allows up to 12 people into one match (as long as they all look similar).
• Fireworks will not be allowed inside the facility and violators will be punished to the full extent of the law.
• Game will not be televised due to technical difficulties at this time.

The first half was the situations that the defeat of the Japanese team was predicted. Bugils got 2 goals in early time, and Bugils managed a game favorably. But, JAPAN team returned two points in the first half, and three points
were added in second half, and finally JAPAN won by 5-2.
Kagami (Japan)

Yet again, Bugils played a storming first 15 minutes to take a shock 2-0 lead through great teamwork between Will and Neil, and a superb volley from 20+ yards by Neil, before the Japanese clawed their way back to 2-2. Bugils' shape and fitness deteriorated into the second half, as the Japanese increasingly bossed the game, deserving their eventual 5-2 win! The Japanese played hard but fair, and the ref. had an easy game to handle.

Very different match than ususal against the Lions. Much improved Lions team
with top-3 rank potential. Lions were most of the match the better team and
deserved the victory, although they had to snatch the winner in the 92nd
minute, damn, typical Knudde! The most positive point of the match was
however the fairness of the game. Even the usual verbal agression of the
boys was almost not heard. The incredible speed that the new Lions players
brought in, apparently made the old boys breathless themselves (and Knudde
as well). One complaint I have to file here is that the Lions coach
constantly crossed the mid-line of the pitch and therefore entered into my
territory. Fortunately Andy is rather small, so I could still follow the
match properly by looking over the top of his head. As I believe Lions and
Knudde are the only two teams that have official non-playing coaches,
perhaps it is advisable that when the two teams meet again in the second
leg, that we paint coach boxes on the grass, just as in the Premier
League...... Well done boys!

Apologies but only the bare facts again.
Gary
(X-Pats)

After a unsteady start to the season Doit get back into the groove. Although it was difficult to judge how much of a groove as we were playing against an expat side who probably have the only record worse than us so far and a depleted team at that! So much so that they had to enrol a couple of young lads to make up the numbers at the start. The signs were good after about 2 minutes after a good break down the right which resulted in a fine cross from Withey / Crouchy to Rudy who headed home. Lots of pressure from Doit especially in midfield but after winning possession in there we were giving it away again. This was mainly down to Lucas, who had bought a new pair of boots from Erwin and they didn't seem to "work" and he was squewing the ball everywhere. However even with this holding Doit back we managed to craft another goal, with Neil cooper taking the honours with a header from close in (hat trick avoidance evident later).

Some fine work on the left and right of midfield covered for the fiasco in the middle. This was where Lucas had been joined by Irishman Ronan O'Neill and between them they displaying some potential to join Billy Smart's circus. The third goal came before half time when McTeir was strangely found on the penalty spot by a cut back from the left, his scuffed shot sneaking through the legs of several players to find poaching Neil Cooper a yard out who stuck out his foot to prod home. Neil claimed it was going wide and his touch was crucial! 3-0 at half time and Doit felt in control of the game. Notable comments of the second half must be attributed to Gareth Withe who over the period of the game must have missed about 4 one on ones, great relief all-round when he did tuck one away after breaking through and after managing to create a very acute angle slotting home (shouting; thank god for that, I thought I had lost me touch!). Also of note was a very important statistical goal scored by Eric from a corner. He told Withey to 'leave the f@#$%ing ball it was Eric's and rose like a proverbial salmon to head home strongly. Withey has now decided not to take part in corners.

It is important statistically because he is getting within 3 goals of French Ronan's all time scoring record. Having started in the forward line he has now moved to the back four via midfield in an attempt by the Doit management to prevent him from breaking this record. Here hoping. Fandi also made a fantastic cross which the Expats keeper fumbled into his own net. Before Rudy scored two great goals on the break near the end of the match. Rudy last goal consisted of him weaving around about 4 yards out trying to get the ball to Neil cooper for his hat trick but Neil failing to get onside, extreme avoidance!!!!

Wednesday 5 October, the first day of Ramadhan, saw the streets somewhat empty of the ubiquitous 30-year old metro minis, etc and pollution levels decreased due to the rain shower from 7.35 – 7.55pm – luckily enough stopping 5 minutes before kick off as ISCI obviously keep a “Pawang Hujan” on staff. Talk before the game for some strange reason centred around the fact that ISCI have no stretcher apparently and in fact later one would have come in handy later when a JakExpats player appeared to almost collapse a few times from dehydration.

An inspiring Wanderers pep talk from Carl rallied the troops who were told in no uncertain terms that use of the longball would see the culprit getting substituted out of the game immediately. While Expats were busily counting the number of players and looked relieved to have 11 to start the game. This was then the perfect setting for the Wanderers to flaunt their sparkling new Umbro kits, reverting back to those “black n white” stripes worn in the previous championship winning seasons, and try to recapture the dazzling football of old.

The Wanderers started slowly in the first 15 minutes but picked up things as the half wore on – keeping a lot of possession and closing down any real threat from the Expats. The first half itself had a few moments to saver for Wandererphiles, some shots on goal, with one from Manny that smashed the round glass porthole at the side of the ISCI being roundly heartily applauded by the crowd of 3 that made it to the game, and some goals from Manny, Dale and Tommy (apologize if sequence of goals not quite factual!!) saw it about 3-0 at half time. The pattern was continued in the second half with Expats battling gamely but beginning to tire due to lack of substitutes. The Wanderers onslaught continued even though JP was manfully marshalling the Expats defensively. Manny with a sweet shot got his second and Carl scored with a wicked bender struck with the outside of his boot, and Dale also finished with 2 goals. A good start with 5 wins of five even though we’ve not really been playing well yet so we know that we will have to play better football to keep the run going.
Mike (Wanderers FC)

Sorry yet again for the very brief report but I am leaving for a long break in ten minutes. After recent results, the expectation Wednesday evening was of huge drubbing against the Wanderers. Particularly as we only had eleven players and no Bambang in goal. However, a change in formation with only three in the back seemed initially to pay dividends and for much of the first half Xpats held the Wanderers at bay and had an equal share of ball possession. Eventually the fluid movement of the Wanderers forwards made the space to score three well taken goals. Sloppy play gifted the Wanderers another three goals at the start of the second half. After that came the highlight of the match - finally we have scored our first goal of the season. Modesty prevents me from saying much more than that it was a blinder of a goal.

After our first win of the season it was with trepidation that we arrived to play the league champions at their home ground on Wednesday! However with a squad of 18 players we had plenty of people itching for a game and as we assembled during a tropical downpour we had run out of shirts for everyone. Steve and Matt were late for the kick off as they had mistakenly gone to ISCI. Our new formation baffled JIS from the beginning and Doit played and competed for every ball from the start. The first 25 minutes or so were tense and even but with Doit playing the best football, especially in the midfield where we spoiled the normally creative JIS game and with the return of Trigger (Mike Whibley) the defence looked more solid than in recent weeks.

One of the highlights was Lucas going off to try out his new boots while Fandi terrorised the JIS defence. Our hard work paid off when Gareth broke down the left flank and cut the ball into the middle where Rudy met it a few yards out putting it past the keeper. Unfortunately Doit took their foot of the pedal and JIS scored within a few minutes of the restart, a minute after Uwe had put himself on (he claims he was directly involved). But we kept plugging away and in one of our moves resulted in Gareth carrying the ball forward and having a shot from just outside the box. The aforementioned downpour meant that the ball took a vicious bounce flying of the surface just in front of the keeper and into the net. Just rewards for the work in the 1st half and we had our refreshments at half time 2-1 up.

Talk at half time was centered around how well we were doing and how JIS had not threatened as much as we feared. Everyone was keen to get back on with the game which was a good sign and the central midfield trio of Matt, Lucas and Ronan were working their little socks off. This resulted in a the goal that killed the game when Gareth broke down the right and beat the defence, running in on goal. He rounded the keeper taking the ball wide right, almost too far and finished from an acute angle. JIS came back at us but with Doit working well as a team, covering for each other and with the midfield competing and winning most of the 50:50 balls. Sid Whyte (second man of the match on the trot) had a great game marshalling the defence and even keeping Eric right on the left (if you know what I mean).

Doit saw out the game with the only other highlight being a clear penalty when a JIS central defender punched the ball off the line from a Ronan header which the ref failed to spot. Once again it was the crap ref we had the other week and he had another shocker. The final whistle came and we were elated at the result. Having staved off the imminent sacking of the management team for another week it was decided to retire to the Satu Lagi bar to quaff a few ales in celebration. To the Satu lagi bar, things start to get fuzzy here apart from the following sound bites: Somewhere in excess of 100 B52's were consumed Trigger having not played, decided that the ladies in the bar were to be his exercise for the night Isaac working his way in with the new BIS ladies, telling his surfing tales, odds were 2- 1 on that he would mount all three within the week! I lost my mobile phone because trigger had hidden it under the socks in the kit bag to prevent it getting nicked, found it the next morning! And I was blaming the scousers!

We attracted three new female fans from the ranks of the BIS teaching staff (who had to drink numerous B52's as part of their initiation) and they are teaching our kids!! Some dubious pool games with the one armed bandit taking the honours once again! Steve Lockwood, having to drink the bowl of gravy as a penalty for drinking too quick downed the lot and stuck the bowl on his head, only for the remaining content to run out onto his hair. "One for the road" started at about 12:30 until 2am Lucas never got to the office until 11am next day, but at least he got there (Ronan still not clocked in) Final bill in excess of Rp 5 juta and everyone paid up apart from Eric who only had Rp 300,000!!!!!!! (you are still due the club funds) A fantastic impromptu night that we all enjoyed. It is good to win against a good team!!!

Bloody great result and good team performance! No game this week, and our next fixture is against Bugils at BIS on Sat 15th, KO 3:30. Enjoy the weekend off and rest those injuries, recover from the hangover and advise me if available for the next game!
