Like fine wines

Dear Leaders of the Worldwide Football Revolution,

Welcome back to the JIFL and the beginning of the 2005-06 season! The league kicked off to an exciting weekend of surprising results and the standard looks higher than ever this year with more than a couple of dozen ex-pros and a handful of former national team players from various lands throughout the world competing in our ever evolving league. What I love about this league is that every year the standard rises even higher than the year previously. Like fine wines, even though we get older, we continue to improve as individuals and as teams. It is something to take pride in and something to celebrate.

First of all, German Plus opened the season with a roaring victory over the Jakarta X-Pats 5-0 at ISCI for the JIFL season commencement. Fireworks and dancing girls were part of the opening ceremonies with a Cirque du Soleil show following the match and a Rick Springfield concert where he performed an array of early '80's hits like Jessie's Girl on the ISCI soundstage.

The worst defeat in Deutschland's 41 year history

Then those total footballers at Knudde took 3 home points off of DOIT with a score of 2-1 to throw an immediate monkey wrench into DOIT's hopes of taking the title off of JIS this year. With the return of Maurice Bloem and JIFL All-Star Joris van Hees into the Dutch side, Knudde add two key players to an already smart footballing side which looks like an early favorite for at least a UEFA cup slot this year if not a Champions League spot just shining over the horizon. Knudde are going to trip up some sides this year no doubt.

Meanwhile, those ever improving Japanese at Team Japan are also off to a flying start by tripping up last year's Most Improved JIFL side, The Magnificient Vikings, 2-1 out at Sentul and they did it without the JIFL 2005 Player's Player of the Season and the league's top goalscorer master marksman Sugimoto-san. Another JIFL All-Star, the clever Japanese midfielder Go, got a goal (he wanted me to tell all of you). And, if all of that was not enough, then I might as well let you know that the Wanderers had a startling victory over German Plus to a score of 9-0 out at Sentul led by the other JIFL 2005 Player's Player of the Season, Manny 'Manuito' Rawthore, who smashed in a hat-trick of terrific goals. It was heard (but not verified) that that was the worst defeat in Deutschland's 41 year history here in Jakarta.

E-mail mania going round and round

Well, if it is any consolation to the Deutscher side, the Wanderers used to get creamed every week by that many goals or more just a short while back in JIFL history (and, additonally, another consolation is that England is struggling to qualify for next year's World Cup to be held in Germany). For anybody who is interested, Mike Wildblood or Carl Albillot will sit down anytime and tell you the horror stories of the early years in the club. And they will tell you it all with an enormous amount of pride about how many years to took before they ever even got a victory in the league.

Meanwhile, again... The Mighty Lions were full of shake-ups and scandal before they even got their season kicked off. Managers resigning. Captains quitting. E-mail mania going round and round.  SMS city out and about town. Whew! Exciting stuff but now it seems that they have all kissed and made up and things should be back to status quo by Saturday night's round-up against the Wanderers at ISCI (I suspect that the evil genius Ollie-bert Anderson is somehow connected to all of the traumatic events that have been happening in the club these last couple of weeks...  but that is just my personal feeling. I could be wrong).

Get better Jurrien

Lastly, 2005 Champions JIS roared back in style to open their season 5-0 with a victory over the X-Pats. JIFL All-Star Gordon Boyd snatched a hat-trick in the opener but, sadly, the other All-Star and JIS's fearless leader, Jurrien Sietsma, went down with an undiagnosed injury to one of his pegs. Let's hope Jurrien is better very soon. Playing against JIS without Jurrien is like eating pizza without cheese and tomato sauce... a key ingredient is just missing and the pie doesn't taste the same without it.  Get better Jurrien and let us know how you are progressing.

"Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back...."

It was new season premiere against our friends from Do It United. Knudde knew a comeback rentree of Orange legionnaires Maurice Bloem and Joris van Hees who are an absolutely asset for the team. Also a rentree of the injured midfielders Hidde Maas and Stefan vd Hende who still have to make a long road back to matchrhythm. The team still misses defender Rob Nijkrake with a knee injury and 'bomber' Jeroen Lezer who's tendantachilles is ruptured.

Obviously there was more balance in and pressure from the Dutchies which resulted in one way direction football towards the goal of the British lads. Inevitable effect were 2 stunning goals from All Time topscorer Elwin de Groot early in the first half. If Orange was cool and determined enough more Dutch goals would have brought Knudde in a comfoprtable and untouchable leading position. After the tea the cards changed damatically. The 2nd half was absolute a negative copy of the 1st 40 minutes. It was Do It played Dutch total football and we saw one way direction football on the Dutch goal. This resulted in a goal for the Yellow jerseys, 1 - 2. Knudde played really untraditional 'cattenaccio' with sporadic counters and was not a shadow of their great performance of the 1st half. Both teams had a yellow card for some lousy fouls and Knudde played smartly the ending minutes away and kept the valuable 3 points in their pockets. Dutch glory and victory again. The team was not complete
yet today but with a full squad and regular traininssessions and skilled coaching it will absolutely have a chance to end in the top 3 in May/June next year.
Oranje boven,
Jeroen Lezer (Knudde)

DOIT GET OFF TO A BAD START

After two successful pre-season friendly's, Doit were confident if a flying start to the season. However we soon realised that Knudde had a strong team out, even if they did arrive a bit late for the KO. With seven subs on the bench there were no excuses for tiredness and everyone was itching for a game (I think that was why they were itching). Doit took a while to settle into their stride as Knudde harried every ball and shut down the midfield very quickly with youthful enthusiasm. Knudde were breaking down both flanks and causing Doit all sorts of problems. This resulted in a well taken goal after about 20 minutes and Doit were rocked into action. Unfortunately not quick enough as five minutes later a defensive mix up (From Captain Sid Whyte) resulted in their attacker being through one on one with our keeper, who he rounded nicely at full speed and tucked home from an acute angle. 2-0 and a few frustrated players out on the park.

A stern half time discussion ensued and it was agreed that we were not working hard enough and very few options were available for players with the ball. Only four players were "looking for it" and that just wasn't enough. A friendly word in the ear of one of the Knudde players about three of their team not wearing shin pads was rebuked with a "we like to live dangerously" (in an accent very similar to Mr Goldmember describing his schmelting accident)!. Anyway on we went to the controversial second half. Doit pick themselves up by the scrag of the neck and started to work harder for each other. One notable break (because I was involved in it) came about when McTeir broke down the wing and picked out a foraging Czolak at the near post and unfortunately he struck the post with his effort, this was a signal that all was about to change. In another quick break of fine one touch football triangles we suddenly found ourselves with Denis in the box on the penalty spot with no opposition player within tackling range.

The old master looked up and coolly slotted the ball home into the bottom left hand corner. 2-1 and we were back in the game. Next a ball into the box and a clear hand ball from the mouthy defender (who suddenly went very quiet), but I think the referee was unsighted( but not so his linesman as I was standing next to him at the time) so no whistle! Then another referee incident. Amidst accusations of flying elbows (but no one having actually been struck) the referee booked one of the Knudde players for 'talking to much' (apparently he had been complaining to the ref too many times). When it was pointed out to the ref that the player should leave the field, he replied "NO, NO, NO there is nothing in the rules about that, and this is only a friendly". After we pointed out it wasn't a friendly and the player had to go of for 20 minutes then it was all worked out.

AAAAAAAGH!! Doit continued to push for the equaliser and the Knudde keeper made a few fine saves, then with 3 minutes left sweeper Sid Whyte, swept and took out a rampaging Knudde forward (about knee high) about 3 yards outside the penalty area. He was lucky to get a yellow and had to leave the pitch. The game played out and Knudde had a deserved win, only scar on the match was a tempestuous period of about 15 minutes after our goal when it all got a bit verbal (handbags at twelve etc etc).

Well, we thought that after our good start to the new campaign we maybe could trip up the Mighty Wanderers again like we did last season when we drew twice with them and consequently JIS became the Champion. Yeah, let's say "almost". Wanderers played with our former player Germano Frasson as well as with Cameroun former international Jules Onana, who joined the worldcup finals in 1990 + 1994. For the first twenty minutes we were even dominating the match and missed good chances by Darius and Irfan. We were unlucky not to score, with the Wanderers it was different as basically every shot on our goal went in!

- 25th minute: Marko could not hold the ball, Tommy converted the re-bounce 0-1
- 30th minute: A fine header by Manni 0-2
- 32th minute: 0-3

The German Plus "defence" organized by Dieter collapsed. I heard Dale telling his team-mates "today we are making it 8". And Dale was damned right!!

- 35th minute: another nice shot 0-4
- 40th minute: Dale scored 0-5

Half time and we were licking our wounds. It took the Wanderers ten minutes into the second half to make it 0-6. Thenafter I stopped recording the events, further goals came 0-7, 0-8 and 0-9. Final score: German Plus vs Wanderers 0-9. I played the first match for the German team back in 1982, but during 23 years until now I cannot remember any similiar humiliating defeat. A black day in the history of German Plus!
All credit to the Wanderers though, I think we lost against the new champion.
Peter (German Plus)

I think that all Wanderers would agree with Howie's judgement. But the order of goals was different then he observed.

• 1st Half
- 1st Goal: Tommy (off Manny's rebounded shot 7 yards out)
- 2nd Goal: Manny (long bullet header off of a cross 15 yards out)
- 3rd Goal: Super-Hendo (off a litle through pass 6 yards out)
- 4th Goal: Max Belli (Italian style skill and set-up 6 yards out)
- 5th Goal: The 'President' (off a solo run and 25 yard rocket straight off the inside post)

• 2nd Half
- 6th Goal: Manny (rocket from 18 yards out)
- 7th Goal: Manny (first timer Beckham-curler upper V outside of the foot from 25 yards out)
- 8th Goal: Dale (off of the kickoff (won by Keith) ran down and upper V'd from 20 yards out)
- 9th Goal: Tommy (turn inside the box and shot low in the far corner 10 yards out)

Match Summation: Germany could have been 2 or 3 up in the first half hour. But once the floodgates opened then their was no stopping the Wanderers onslaught. The German goalie had a terrific day in our opinion. He stopped it from being 15 to nil. Germans have a good side and the scoreline is no indication of the style of the match. Wanderers are just finishing superbly on the attack side and the defenders are hustling on the other side. Nothing else to it.
